Man, that Maron twist was so great, because it set the stage for the best line in the entire series. "The difference between you and me is that when my girl left me, she took all my money. When *your* girl left you, she took all *her* money."
I like to think that this episode is where Krillin completely stepped out of his jerkass mindset after getting so royally screwed. Even in this episode he's so desperate to get laid that it inevitably leads to his downfall, and that + dying twice + the 3 year maturity gap led to him being a much more grounded and sympathetic character in season 3
I’ve always liked how Marin mentions that Krillin is kept out of prison for his own safety at a point in time where you can count the number of people on the planet actually able to hurt him on one hand.
I know right, every time I rewatch this and she says "do you know what would they do to guys like you" I think to myself "nothing, except die to him"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I can buy that due to self-confidence issues, they could push him around, and only realizes how he could demolish the entire prison with one finger when his friends visit him and point this out
@@PartigradeCannon it's interesting that conversely, 18 brought out his confidence even before they got together. "I may not be good for much, but I can LIFT"
on twitter, a long time ago, I asked what you would do with Garlic Jr and Kaiser told me something like "oh we'll give it the respect it deserves" and I smiled to myself and decided to trust you, so I was laughing my ass off for this entire episode.
Nail telling Piccolo to get a house has got to be one of the best aging interactions in the show because of the existence of "Dragonball Super:Superhero".
Nail: You can make clothes out of nothing! Are you sure you don't have a house beam? Piccolo: Of course, I don't have a...wait do I? Kame: Yes, you do. Piccolo: Why didn't you tell me I could just make a house then this whole time? Freezing my green ass in Yazabitz heights all these years. Kame: I thought you knew, plus you were kind of a dick until we fused.
Honestly I had this thing where I took Maron calling Krillin her "sweetie little chestnut" as foreshadowing that she knows who he actually was the whole time. Since the "kuri" in his name means "chestnut".
Along with moments where she makes puns or plays on words that are just too clever for the airhead personality she's exhibiting. At best, she was doing the Marilyn Monroe/Lucile Ball "very clever, savvy woman playing up a personality archetype" thing. At worst, well, Krillin never stood a chance.
Glad Kaiser brought up people's goldfish memory. All I could think was "remember, these are the people that Hercule managed to convince that powers were all smoke and mirrors"
Because the Garlic Jr. crew had five members, my head canon has always been that the Garlic Jr. scenes act more as an unspecified flashback explaining Kami's line, "last time I counted five bodies."
Kinda saw that from the beginning, even when it was live aired in my country I thought about it. A man can bench press a planet but cant get a girl? Nahh that's a scammer
@@174Anime Same reason they haven't done World's Strongest yet. The first two DBZ movies were originally done before they formed TFS and had different people involved and very different scripts. (Lani and Masako were involved, Kaiser wasn't.) They eventually remade them years later with the current TFS team, but they didn't do those two movies chronologically compared to the others. They'll talk about them when they get to the point they made them.
@@robbybevard8034 They made the movie after this episode? But this was garlic jr's return. Why would they abridged the original movie after his 2nd appearance?
@@174Anime Because they had already done the movie once as a different team and had no plans to redo it at all. They just did it eventually for completionism. And its not like they actually did anything with Garlic here, he was only onscreen for like 20 seconds. The entire joke was "no one cares about this character. SKIP." I think they DID do it before the Kai episode that actually covered the arc, so...
@@robbybevard8034 yes they did. Garlic Saga Kai just came out as a joke because 1. Season 3 took forever to end and 2. when they finally did finish it and had plans for kai it was like "Oh yeah, we did Garlic Jr technically. Let's make it a whole episode for Kai." as a joke.
@@oopsy444 Admittedly, I have been thinking they might make a series about Krillin and Lazuli's relationship. Considering how much things change for Krillin during the interim between the Cell and Buu Sagas, I'd say there's a lot of room for them to work with from him popping the question to when he and Lazuli have Marron. If they do, I hope they build up to the wedding instead of just jumping straight to the ceremony. There's no way they can resist the urge to have Master Roshi throw Krillin a bachelor party.
I think both Masako and Lani did fine jobs as Roshi. Oddly, the one scene that sounds really weird to me is Roshi with Bulma watching the Cell Games (specifically, when #16 tries to self-destruct).
Thing is, roshi sounds so roshi in season 3 that no one really paid it any mind when it sounded more like THEIR personal experience of listening to roshi, it just felt so natural that no one really noticed the voice actor change until a rewatch.
Pretty much. I never paid it much mind and thought maybe whoever had been doing it just changed it to be more in-line with the English dub(s) or something. And tbh, I think it works a LOT better than the original version would have for stuff like World's Strongest
What?? I cant believe Lani feels iffy about Episode 49! Its got such good lines! "Then Triclops shows up and decides IM JUST GONNA TURN TRIANGLES INTO FUCKIN SQUARES!" "I am and adul-" "No. No you are not." And of course the whole interaction between cell and the island denizens when hes looking for 18?? ITS PERFECTTT
If that’s the episode that I’m thinking about… then the whole cell drooling loudly as he spots 18 and trunks is in his head like “wtf is going on” and the he yells at Krillin “WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU” is one of my favorite moments
I love that krillin was afraid of going to jail when no prison on earth could hold him. Also he could probably ask kami to like erase her memories or something.
he's friends with bulma, heiress of capsule corp. he could get a lawyer from her and beat their case. Hell he didn't even really admit to fraud, he actually died and said as much.
@@ishill85 it doesn’t matter how strong you are, even if sending you to jail is impossible, I doubt anyone wants to go through the hell that is “taking someone to court” even with a rich friend, the whole process is a minor inconvenience to krillin, but an inconvenience is an inconvenience Even if you had an easy out; if you had to choose between getting taken to court vs not getting taken to court, you’re obviously going to prefer one over the other Ntm the abridged version of bulma, is such a selfish dick, I’m sure krillin knows that going to bulma for money and actually succeed in getting it isn’t exactly guaranteed. She literally dropped her own boyfriend for the guy that got him killed only a few weeks ago from their perspective Krillin’s right to doubt her generosity 💀
The story of how Lani got into Dragonball by watching Tree of Might and Garlic Jr. reminds me of the fact that the very first episode of Avatar that I ever watched was The Great Divide.
Same here, it honestly surprised me to here that they weren't as happy with it. Cell arguing with the island inhabitants might be my favorite scene in the show (outside of episode 60 of course).
I've never laughed so hard in my life as when I first heard "and then tri-clopse shows up and decides 'I'm just gunna turn triangles into fucking squares'"
When this episode released I was actually tricked BECAUSE the intro was just as high effort as the previous ones. I was like "wow they're actually doing this" and the heel turn is one of my favorite memories of this series
I remember thinking 'Oh, their actually doing the whole garlic jr arc? Oh well, it's TFS so I'm sure it will be great. This episode was very memorable IMO.
I forgot how good this episode is. Everything works so damn well, the twist with Marin is gold, and then Mr Popo reminding everyone of the packing order is just glorious.
I honestly always thought that the Roshi change was just a stylistic change, not a whole ass VA change, but in general this is one of my favorite episodes and so glad to see these commentaries back
Y... you know they didn't actually change clothes in between bits, right? That they were lampshading the pre-recorded ad copy by addressing the likelihood of wearing different outfits in the show proper?
I remember back when Masako would make interviews with different people, he got to talk with Megami, and i remember him mentioning that he felt hurt when he stopped being Roshi since at least from what i recall, he didn't know why the recast, but that also motivated him to improve his other roles.
When I first saw the "Fauxpening" I had innocent expectations on whatever you guys wanted to dish out. Garlic Jr. arc was indeed one of the first ever arcs I saw in my life (on Toonami) and was just looking forward to seeing this play out in 'Abridged' form. Once the fake out happened, I realized "oh yeah people don't like this arc... I mean I don't particularly either, so whatever!"
Shout out to the Advertisement bits. Lani's one of the few youtubers who do REALLY entertaining ads for their sponsors. "I WAS TALKING ABOUT METH!" got a laugh outta me.
As a Earth Frenchman (not to be confused with a Space Frenchman), the Restaurant's name made me giggle. Tbh you can see this kind of joke quite often in Tv shows or parodies and it never gets old
I remember when this episode first aired. I had completely forgotten about the whole Garlic Jr arc. I did get tricked into thinking you guys were going to cover the whole arc. When the end of the episode came I was taken off guard and just laughed at the sheer brilliance of it. Also, I loved the twist with Maron being a government agent. Anyways, can't wait to see the commentary for the next couple of episodes. Vegeta and his pink shirt gag is probably one of the hardest times I've laughed in my life.
I distinctly remember being about half way through this episode when I wondered "uhhh so are we just not doing garlic Jr?" And that twist blew me away, and I totally forgot about him until the end
I remember watching the opening and first thinking that it was a special and then seeing the opening credits being disappointed that it was Garlic Jr, but ready to roll with it; my enjoyment increased throughout the episode that by the time the finale rolled around and the reveal was complete I was totally onboard. I had forgotten that Garlic Jr. was an actual arc and I love how it played out.
Every time I get ambushed in a video game, whether it's a soulslike, survival horror, etc, I always hear Lani's Krillin's "Aaand we are *leaving!*" in my head. Love that line delivery.
I can't lie I was certainly bamboozled and groaned cause I thought you guys were going to definitely cover Garlic Jr saga. To my surprise and delight it was over so quickly and what you guys did with it is one of my favourite things that you guys have done.
Sad they didn't comment on Maron telling Krillin "Do you have any idea what they'd do to guys like you?", despite him probably being able to blow up the planet at this point in time.
As I understand it, nothing in this episode tells us that Maron knows how strong Krillin is... so I think Krillin just didn't want to go to jail and accepted to return the money. But yeah, that part of the scene it's a bit weird and it's too bad they didn't give us any background on it.
To be fair to past Kaiser, the sudden shift from the romantic sunset colors, to the blue sky in Maron's shots is pretty funny itself. It's like the while illusion of her being a ditz is breaking.
This is one of my all time favorite episodes of DBZA. The “relationship” between ‘Juan’ / Krillie-Billie and Marron was just hilarious, the bit where Bulma bulldozes Yamcha and then proceeds to flame his sad, pathetic existence was amazing, and the twist at the end was unexpected and just perfect. Phenomenal work overall. ❤
I honestly keep on forgetting Weird Al makes a 'cameo appearance' in DBZA. It always makes me super excited and just gives me another reason to enjoy the show
Awkward date at her house but you stay to hit it… sure her dad is a butcher and her brother wears a helmet… dat ass tho!! I joke but realize… in my experience her dad was a pig farmer and her brother was ex military.. did tap it…
I just wanted to drop a comment and say that Turtle might actually be my favorite character in the entire series. He's just so adorable, funny, and mildly pathetic all at the same time. Love the portrayal.
When the garlic jr episode aired I genuinely thought they were gonna do garlic jr lmao. But the slice of life episode of Krillin getting played was gold. And that intro was dope.
Regarding Piccolo going with Majunior alias. In the Japanese version, Majunior was written in katakana so the ma in majunior was just a sound, not the word for evil. Difference between the letter i and the word I.
“Why aren’t you upstairs sleeping with your girlfriend like everyone else?” One of my FAVORITE lines from all of TFS lmao the sheer subtlety and absolute savagery while also being completely accurate is just the best thing ever lol so many people I watch reacting to this show just gloss over it and it’s so sad lol
I was surprised “you were going to do it”, only to kiiinda realize by Marin’s insurance confession to Krillin that “wait… what about Garlic Jr???” And then the ending with Popo got me and I got a great laugh out of it. It was great!
To hear how you loved this episode and this being a sort-of writing exercise, I wonder how season 4 would’ve been in re-formatting the whole “gohan goes to high school/saiyaman” saga with this same exercise in mind. Love you guys. 🎉
Bulma surpasses Yamcha in power level and ful force tackled him "ok, first off, noone screws Yamcha but life" Easily one of the best lines in the whole series
I personally feel the Garlic Saga was a good chance to showcase how good the Z-Fighters can be without Goku or Vegeta always being needed to save the day. Earthlings need a means to grow to become a match for Saiyans.
