"Lord Freeza... the f**k?" is without question my favourite line in the entire series. The delivery is what really sells it. He sounds so emotionally hurt as well as physically.
absolutely a massive complement: that's how I am with the voices of Joker and Batman in comics: they're always Hamill and Conroy (RIP). I tend to be this way with Lani and Vegeta as well honestly
I’ve hit that point with most of the character voices when I’m reading the manga. I have nothing against the actual dub actors, but the DBZA voices are just special.
I can't remember in which video he said it, but Scott has said that from working with Lawrence Simpson/MasakoX for so long, that he now reads Manga Goku in DBZA Goku's voice.
One of my favorite things about the "Hey Freeza!" moment is that Freeza doesn't act surprised or mad that Trunks survived. He just yells "WHAT!?" It's like he's just angry that Trunks shouted at him.
@@Dad...... Speaking as an aspiring amateur creative myself- I _do_ get it, you're often your own worst critic because you have a more personal view of your work, your skills, and how both change over time, so things audiences won't bat an eye at can leave the creator grinding their teeth. But the original point still stands. XD
First time I heard Scott play Trunks, I legit thought they had gotten Eric Vale, or as close as they could have possibly have gotten. After listening to both portrayals, its now easier to tell how unique each one is. I'm equally grateful for each performance. 😌
This is definitely one of those episodes where I keep thinking to myself “That’s one of my favorite line reads” or “That joke is one of my favorites” after nearly every line of dialogue 😂
My personal favourite Trunks line has to be "Okay, guys, if you're bothered by cheating, either loosen your moral code or stop hinging the fate of the world ON DEATHMATCHES!" because he's really the only pragmatic character.
It's basically like: Trunks: "I've traveled through time just to save your lives and change the fate of the world" The people he came back to save: "Not if I have anything to say about it! We're going to sabotage that at all costs" Trunks: "Wtf is wrong with you people?!"
Trunks: “Well Frieza, it looks like you dropped the ball!” Frieza: 😐 Trunks: “Drrrrropped the ball” Frieza: 😑 Trunks: “Drrrrrrrrrrrrrropped the-!” Frieza: 😡👉💥 Still cracks me up every time
I'm impressed that Freeza waited that long to shoot. I can imagine he was internally like "He's just trying to get under my skin. Just ignore him. It doesn't bother me..." Tbh by the time he shoots it's like can you really blame him at that point. Reminds me of how Krillin dies in abridged. He went out on such an asshole note. Piccolo gets shot, Gohan is crying, and he's just like "Oh thank god, I thought that was gonna be me." Then when Freeza says "Remember my tail?" he's like "Can't you take a joke?" and just has this dopey ass smile on his face like omg
It fits perfect with what they were saying, too. Trunks is a teenager trying to look cool. For all his badass in this scene, he's ultimately still a kid, and that reaction is absolutely a kid going "eh? Eh? Get it?" when someone doesn't react like he expected them to. In that respect, Freeza actually got the measure of him incredibly quickly, calling him out as "a five-year-old trying to play police officer."
I'm surprised how small the difference is. 14-year-old Kaiser killed it compared to what I was expecting to hear. I'm also surprised that older Kaiser was able to reuse a voice from that long ago in his life at all while still making it better
My favorite joke from this episode really was "He must never know" from Vegeta, simply because it's either him trying to save Krillin from the possibility of that thought, or his downright refusal to let him believe they share the same mindset.
"Almost destroying the planet" Honestly feels like a smaller feat when one remembers that Master Roshi blew up the moon with relative ease back in Dragonball.
Facts. People need to remember that Roshi blew up the moon after fighting Goku and dealing with a rampaging Oozaru-Goku, so he wasn't exactly in top condition. And he wasn't even the strongest! Demon King Piccolo and Piccolo were stronger then him! Raditz could probably blow up the solar system with a few regular-ass ki blasts if he wanted to.
So no joke, with roshi being who he is, and how strong he is capable of being, roshi could solo everyone up to like freeza who has walked up on him, he's just old so he's got no hp and some joint problems so limited access to immeasurable power
As Lani has his theory about how was that attack strong enough to destroy the Earth or not, my theory is comparing it to bomb disposal. Frieza detonated his big ki ball with a small blast; I'm thinking THAT was what caused the size of the explosion, not the energy from his main attack. He used a small explosion to destroy his big bomb. There was some energy released, yes, but it wasn't the full force of the big ki ball as if it had exploded 'normally'.
Trunks’s Burning Attack is a really underrated DBZ technique that I adore. When I was younger, I thought Trunks’s rapid arm movements were him gathering a bunch of particles out of the air to form the blast, but nah, he’s just a weeb.
@@battlesheep2552 It was a bait. He was flashy to make Freeza dodge it even if he could have likely blocked it or deflected it so he could blindside him with the sword after
Trunks internal scream after Bulma hits on him is still my favourite moment in the show. The facial expression, the pitch of the scream. It's all perfect.
Bulma, talking about Trunks: “So, do you think the carpet matches the drapes?” Krillin, offhandedly responding the same way: “I dunno, do yours?” Bulma, ignoring the double standard: “KRILLIN!”
The Bulma "Mommy" joke is my favorite bit in the whole series. It never fails to make me laugh. Also, Kaiser's Super Sayian yell was awesome! 10/10 in my opinion
From watching the series as a kid, to then discussing every DBZA episode in high school, and now watching this commentary as someone about to turn 30, I can't say enough how amazing this is. I hope you and all the creators involved know how impactful and hilarious this series has been for literally millions of people.
I’m late to Abridged only discovered it during the pandemic. I grew up watching the original dragon ball which aired before I caught my bus for grade school back in the 90s and DBZ when it came on Cartoon Network later. It’s amazing how much love the DBZA creators have for the work but able to inject their own humor without losing the essence of why we all love dragon ball. It’s the best kind of parody.
Fucking same I remember being in like junior or senior year watching the Ginyu force finally arrive in the abridged series. So crazy now that I'm 30 how long it's been. Even worse when I'm also a RedvsBlue fan too and been with that since the final season of the original Blood Gulch Chronicles season 5.
I'm glad Kaiser played his favorite character. He honestly became the definitive Trunks for me as well. Especially in the Super abridged short they made where Trunks defeated Zamasu.
I like the theory that, because they had nothing to train for in Trunks' timeline until Gero and 19 showed up, everyone was just so weak compared to 17 and 18 they didn't even have to show their full power
Pretty sure that’s how it was. It’s implied that the future androids never went all out in front of Trunks (they’d supposedly never even used 50% until maybe when they killed Gohan) so his impression of their full power was extremely off and seeing the main timeline ones actually getting serious against the z-fighters convinced him that they were stronger than the ones he knew
For what it's worth, Kaiser, I literally had no idea that was you playing Trunks until recently and I can think of no higher praise for a voice actor. In fact, also ironically, your delivery of the line "NOTICE ME!!!" is one of my favorites in the whole series, especially with Lani's retort of "NOOO!!!"
I gotta say it's pretty funny how all the members of the cold clan were originally (technically) played by an OG member of the team and then were swapped to other newer people for the voices later. King Cold - Ben (Abridged)/DevilArtemis (HFIL) Freeza - Lani (Brief Gag)/LittleKuriboh (Actual VA) Cooler - Scott (Bardock)/Guerrero (RoC & Beyond) A fun pattern there shared by all of them by coincidence.
@@CPUpwner Time to do a HFIL episode where Curtis does a terrible Chilled impression for 30 seconds only for someone completely different to take over the role!
"This is gonna be really uncomfortable for me, I can't lie" Seriously, I can never get over how great a contrast you two make as a pair. You take turns being knowledgeable of what was happening in real life at the time of the episode versus what you were thinking at the writer's table, and where one of your minds fails the other inevitably steps in to fill in the rest. Lani brings in high energy and the visceral adoration side of the fanbase while Kaiser brings a drier enthusiasm and brings a deep appreciation of everything Dragonball, not just the shows. Watching either of you light up when a moment you take pride in is coming up brings a smile to my face, and even then, Lani goes fully into character and belts out the lines from the chest whether they were his or not, while Kaiser tends to mouth the line under his breath, and smirks during the great deliveries, both of them clearly taking pride in the team. I've been loving these retrospectives for the commentary, but I couldn't ask for two better talking heads to give it
Seriously y'all, this is like director's commentary to the extreme, and I am so thrilled to be able to watch the series (for the umpteenth time) in a totally new way.
Kaiser you are so talented please don't discredit yourself because I can't see anyone voice Trunks for dbza other than you. Literally I still get chills with your performance in episode 53. You killed it.
One of my favorite character changes you did was making Trunks a big nerd who actually meets his heroes and becomes entirely disillusioned. I think it plays better with his trauma and how he's the only one who actually sees how badly things can turn out from all the bs his supposed heroes pull. The cool trunks from the original will always be nostalgic but this gave him way more depth than superhero from the future.
17:49 You know one of the best little details in DBZ, to me, was that King Cold was speaking through his gritted teeth while he was talking with the guy who murdered his Baby Boi. It also worked real well for that "oh blindingly so" line lol.
Damn, that fandub clip makes me understand why Kaiser was hesitant to play him. That‘ memory’s gotta weigh on one‘s confidence to deliver a proper performance.
I’ve always seen the first appearance of Freaza as more of when you guys transitioned from “random funny” to “what funny thing would this character say”
I never thought about this, but either Bulma gave Trunks a cooler full of 17 year old drinks, or they could've figured out something was up with trunks by looking at the dates on the cans.
Trunks coulda also stopped by somewhere and stocked up on snacks once he got to the past. Paid for with 17-year old money that nobody'd pay attention to.
I really like that specific Bulma and Trunks interaction blew up online in recent times. The amount of redraws and animations that were based on that is awesome and hilarious!
God the "dropped the ball" scene is so good Trunks repeating the same bad pun three times The minimalistic music so all you can focus on is the aforementioned bad pun Kaiser's delivery, announcing it so shamelessly, like it's this fantastic zinger Cutting back and forth from Trunks casually holding it with one hand to a dead silent Freeza The fact that dropped the ball means to mess up, so he's literally telllig Freeza, this super prideful character no one is allowed to sass, that he failed, over and over, and he's just sitting there taking it Cutting off the third, still super casual "dropped the ball" with this absolutely perfect Screech Of Rage from Freeza out of nowhere and instantly following it up with brutal laser and explosion sound effects It is so funny to me. This is one of my favorite jokes in the show, it's just paced, voice-acted, and edited so perfectly
Cheeky Tien is SO damn great this whole season. One of my favorite bits too. haha King Cold is perfect. And the line "Daddy! Not in front of the malcontent!" killllls me. 🤣
Scott. Scott. Scott. Buddy. Scott. Mr. Scott. Kaizer. Scottzer. You are amazing as Trunks. You did your favourite character proud. Don't be so hard on yourself. And thank Lani and Taka for making you do it.
Kaiser, you were always too hard on yourself about your Trunks and your expectations around him. Your dub is the REAL Trunks to me. Hands down. You did the character to PERFECTION. be kind to yourself about it. And thanks for all the time, effort, and love you put in to entertain us all and tell my favorite version of this wonderful story. ❤️
This was the episode that truly stole my heart. Been a fan since ep1, but seeing Trunks being handled the way he was made me smile endlessly. He's also my favorite character and I can't imagine him being played by anyone else. Good job, Kaiser❤️❤️❤️
Kaiser stop. Trunks was never one of my favorite characters in the original, but was 100% my favorite in DBZA primarily due to his writing and delivery. You absolutely nailed Trunks in my opinion, and the fact that he was your favorite character shines through
I remember someone commenting on this episode that they were watching this in full screen and when the blue screen popped up, he raged. Like he just bought a new computer and thought it was real. It's such a brilliant bit too. I don't think the scene could be played any other way and be better than this.
I come bearing compliments: I grew up with the latino dub. And while I will always love them, everytime I think of DBZ in english, you guys are the voices for it. SPECIALLY Scott's Trunks. Like, MasakoX can do a bunch of other characters really well (as seen in his what-ifs), and the rest of the cast is also great, but Trunks is in another whole level (also special acknowledge to Kuriboh's Freeza and Taka's Cell) It's nice to know that one of the most on point voices is still a bit hesitant about it tho. But be humble, not self-doubting.
I love Scott and Martin's back-and-forth. I'd call it 'banter' but they obviously weren't recording in the same place, still great stuff. This is actually an episode I come back to just for the dialog.
Trunks, done by Kaiser, is and always will be my favorite character. The vibe fits well for trunks and I hold by the idea that you inspired and informed people how to VA better. You are all pioneers in the industry whether you feel it or not. Thank you all for the time you spent making the show and the time you are spending on this thing you are doing.
Scott’s Trunks is the canonical voice of Trunks in my head. I thought he did a terrific job portraying him as the noble, well-meaning kid in over his head trying to be a hero.
Kaiser, you're a fantastic Trunks. Quite honestly, I can't think of anyone else who would've done as good a job as you. This ep is one of my all time favorites, the jokes, the VA, it all just fits so well. I love how you wrote Trunks as a badass, but a try-hard. You keep him green, but also Vegeta's son- in every way that counts.
Again Kaiser's Trunks sounds the most Genuine! That scream in history of Trunks is EMOTIONAL.... I always see Trunks as the audience POV... Asking what we ask, calling stuff out... And the realness in the performance is what sells it!
I feel like they become very self aware in this season, like Vegeta says Goku is "never even around" and Piccolo's like well, he's got a point. "So you just ASSUMED they were dead, then?" "We do do that a lot."
@@marvelsandals4228 Trunks as an outsider opened things up for that attitude... And I feel its wrapped up when future Bulma tells future Trunks... "Yeah because I raised you right!" Basically calling out the rest of the crew
When I first heard the Freeza’s mom joke, I thought Vegeta’s “He must never know,” line was implying that Freeza actually does have a mom who really does look like him but with boobs, and Vegeta was aware of her appearance.
Friezas genuine trauma over the super saiyans green eyes is still one of my favorite parts of the whole show. Probably one of my biggest dissapointments with Rez F. It's like Friezas personality did a reset and he just happens to have some namek memories.
I also love the idea of Freeza having immediate PTSD over remembering Goku saying "Pizza" like that's all it takes to set him off he's like yep I'm just straight up blowing up the planet fuck this
I'd love to hear Scott express how much it meant to him to play Trunks. Playing your favorite character on such a grand stage must be a dream come true! Keep up the great work!
God I remember watching this episode over and over again. Trunks getting hit on, Tien’s sass to Vegeta, the shirt gag, Frieza’s glitches. So many good bits in this episode that are perfectly woven through genuinely cool moments and kind of a bit of drama.
Tien and Chiaotzu's relationship is like a Senior Student and a Junior Student who don't have anything else but each other. Maybe like an Elder sibling and a youngest sibling.
A: Kaiser, you killed it as Trunks. You did amazing. Top tear work. B: This is one of my favoite episodes. Freiza's dialog and interactions were top-notch. A perefect send off for his character in the show proper.
On the voice actor vocal range thing at the end, I got to meet Steven Blum at a convention towards the end of his run on Star Wars Rebels. I handed him my Gurren Lagaan box set and he slipped right into his Leeron voice like he did it all the time. Another actor better known for gruff voices who showed good range!
Time for one of my favourite episodes of the series. With my favourite character. And an adaptation of one of my favourite moments in the Dragon Ball series
This is one of the episodes I consistently come back to even if I'm not doing a full rewatch. Has got to be in the top 5 of the series every joke just lands so well.
The Hetap jokes are great because they're consistent in the world, not one-off joke, but continuous running gags turned world building. Kinda like the Cat Loves Food gag. Every song heard thereafter, from Bulma's ring tone, to the Country Music Channel, is just a Cat Loves Food cover.
