I also think I heard a "F Bomb" on a swing and a miss on the net with a pig of a fish :) I honestly think you could catch fish in a flooded pothole. You are truly amazing. The technique you have pioneered and mastered should be a standard for any serious fluke angler.

I don't think Roger was out of line....He was telling the guy what to do b/c he had a big fish on and the guy was making him repeat himself over and over. He wasn't screaming or using foul language. Come to some parts of New York and accidentally get tangled with someone who has a short porgie on the line and don't be surprised to find yourself in a fistfight. Regardless, Roger apologized for any perceived offense. Whether it's the Bucket Brigade or the Bridge Brigade, always try to be respectful and don't take it personal if someone has a big fish on the line and they are upset bc you casted over them. I'm sure you've been asked this before but have you tried a "pier net"? Drop down vertically and steer fish into hoop. Much easier said than done. Love watching your videos and your "engineer's" approach to every situation and adaptation.
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Месяц назад
Yeah a few comments on FB suggested that but that's going backwards imo...what I need is a better extendable net, higher modulus blank, faster action shaft LOL
@sjs11585
@sjs11585 Месяц назад
@@CookingandFishing I hear you. I just think approaching the fish from underneath will reduce the chance of them "feeling" the net and swimming forward or back out of it. Granted the pier you are fishing doesn't appear to be as conducive to pier netting as our piers and bridges in South FL
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Месяц назад
@@sjs11585 It's all about speed with fluke - once they're on top they can stall out and if you're high up on a pier it's difficult to keep tension...you want them head first into the net asap. I got a new net and it's working a lot better so far - more on that in a future video

I appreciate your content, how mindful the educational bits are communicated. I'm on the west coast in the SF bay area and a bass fisherman who just moved close to the bay. I've been learning from your content, as it's far easier to get out to a jetty or pier in the bay than a fresh water pond/lake where I live. Do you reckon these jigging techniques translate to pacific Halibut? I figure they would, given they're both flatfish who presumably both ambush their prey. I don't know how the west coast beach structure would differ from northeast regarding open surf fishing for halibut, everyone out here seems to use white paddle-tail swimbaits with a steady retrieve, are they missing out on the light jig action? I've also been trying to decide between a collapsible drop-net or a telescopic net for the high rock jetties and piers around here - and was wondering if you had any thoughts on the subject.
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Месяц назад
Thank you! I think you 100% want an extendable net, they make XL versions for big fish and since you have a shot at true 30lb+ flatfish that's the route I would take. No way you are maneuvering a drop net under a halibut from a jetty - maybe a pier but I don't like your chances. As for west coast jigging...my guess is guys are fishing for a handful of bites in a day, and the halibut are much more sparse and spread out than our fluke. Add in the flat/shallow beaches and you might be wasting time jigging vs chucking and winding something all day - the name of the game seems to be covering water. Now if you're fishing a chokepoint or structure, standing on a jetty or casting to a channel edge...then definitely I think the single jig makes a lot of sense. I cannot imagine the feeding behavior of calibut and fluke being all the different.
@dnullify100
@dnullify100 Месяц назад
@@CookingandFishing Thanks for the pointers! It looks like I'll have to cover some ground to figure things out. People in the bay area are really tight lipped about fishing locations. Been out a few times in the bay - so far chucking and winding paddle tails, without a hit. I may need to head out to the coast this weekend and give the surf a try. I you've given me some things to Google, if halibut are sparse and run deep that would explain why everyone uses 8'+ rods out here. I was hoping to get away with reusing some bass gear for paddle tails and jerk baits and jigs.
