Hi great drawing - do you use fixative on your work and would you recommend putting on the pastel before adding the coloured pencil or at the end when you have applied all media. Thanks for shairng your valuable tips Big Like👍🏻 Really enjoyed the content - Great work thanks for sharing 🎨 👍🏻 👩🏻🎨
Absolutely gorgeous!! Please tell us which pencils show up over Panpastel best oil or wax based?..should we spray fixative on the pastel before pencils go on so that light over dark shows up??
well, I am still experimenting.. but so far I prefer to use my Polychromos on the pastelmat. The luminance and Prismacolor show up perfectly well on top of the pan pastel base on other papers ( as long as the pan pastel isn't laid down too thickly)... but I prefer the polys for the textured surface. also, while using the pastelmat I haven't found any need to use a fixative.. the pastelmat grips the pan pastel very tightly, and I am not having any trouble with loose pigment, except perhaps the side of my hand getting a little dirty! The wax paper under my hand seems to be enough to prevent smudging. And the textured surface of the paper is enough to allow the lights to show up on the darks. I still have a few experiments to do before I would be willing to give definite answers, but I will be playing with these again soon, so stand by!!
Hi Cassandra I watch all your RU-vid videos with great interest and absolutely love all your tutorials. I am going to give my new pan pastels a go soon. Do you prefer to use coloured pencils over your panpastels as opposed to pastel pencils?
I prefer the colour pencils, just because they stick a little firmer and are less easily damaged when they’re finished... I have seen some amazing work done with pastel pencils though, and I enjoy the process of using pastel pencils... I just don’t have a large enough collection of colours to have much fun though :(
Thank you for your reply. I spend a lot of time trying to decide which mediums and techniques I prefer. Like you I see amazing 100% pastel work but I struggle to get that detail without smudging it. I love the pan pastel because you can block in quick but I also love using pencil blend (oms) on my polychromos. I'm wondering if I use the pans to block in and and a few layers of polys on top blended with oms would work. I will have to give that a try.
