i did a lot of research before buying a screen protector and ended up with an elecom brand one. it’s a japanese brand and i got it for like $15 on ebay. i got the matte drawing smooth version, which is still made for drawing but less texture than their rough and the paperlike one (from what i’ve read) so it won’t wear down the pencil as much, i installed it in the bathroom with steam and then i was able to get all the bubbles out with the plastic card they provided. i’ve had it for about a month and still love it and my pencil tip is just fine. my touch is more on the medium side rather than high. there is scritchy scratchy sound when using it and it reduces glare. i will definitely buy it again when i need it.
For me, it seems far too expensive for what it is, particularly with so many limitations. The fact that it wears out the Apple tip so quickly is really a showstopper.
I removed my screen protector after about 8 months, and glad I did. They really dull the screen clarity and brilliance. I prefer to learn how to best use the iPad and Apple Pencil without a screen protector. BTW, your illustrations are amazing!
Hi guys! do you use Paperlike or other screen protectors? planning on getting one for yourself? In this video, I share my thoughts after using it daily! let me know!
Hi Asia, Nice video! As for me I like drawing on the iPad glass, but I’m worried I might scratch it. As you’ve been drawing on iPad for a long time, I’m curious if you have any scratches on the screen from the heavy usage?
Hi Flora, to be honest I have a few super tiny scratches in the glass ... but not from drawing, but because I use the iPad everyday for everything, but super normal and you would not even notice they are there. The iPad glass is fantastic :)
I've tried the ipad pro without a screen protector, and I had no problem drawing. I just apply a little weight - not a lot - on the tip and do patient medium speed strokes. No wobble, even with smoothing/streamlining turned off. I'd imagine the paperlike has more texture than necessary, especially with all the reports of worn down pen tips. They need to make a smoother version that's more comfortable than plain glass but less rough than the current version.
I used to use a matte screen protector but stopped because of the distortion caused by these matte protectors - it is not something you notice unless you look closely but I was getting headaches because of it. It was good for what it was and I'm convinced Paperlike is just exceptionally good at marketing. If you want a protector, just go for the best value for rating matte screen protector on Amazon or wherever. Personally, I'm waiting for someone to produce special nibs for the pencil as it doesn't compromise the screen - I saw one advertised a couple of months ago but can't find it now.
Hi Sashi, totally understand your point, many have the same opinion and I think I know what you mean, I feel that sometimes but not when drawing but when maybe using the iPad for something else, like watching something or browsing ... thanks for sharing
Thank you for your unbiased review on this. You and another watercolor artist I follow seemed to be the only ones making an unsponsored review. I don’t have paperlike, the price was the main reason why I just got a cheaper matte protector instead. I use the iCarez matte protector that I got on sale for 6 bucks. After prolonged use, yes I have noticed minor scratches on my screen because I use a lot of pressure, but I just ordered a new one, so it’s not a big deal. I agree about the color quality and don’t know why people say it ruins the color, I think matte screens are fine for illustration or design work. But, if you’re watching a video it does distort the crispness of the quality. Watching an animated show though I don’t notice a difference. I’m clumsy and have dropped my iPad before, so I needed a screen protector, but I chose the matte because I have more control drawing and it’s fingerprint free!
Thanks a lot for sharing. I will always say my honest opinion, even if the video was sponsored. I include many pros and cons, and I wanted to include more than my opinion and I think adding all of you guys experiences might help someone to decided if this is for them or not, despite of the brand .. I really hope that videos like this one helps :) thanks for sharing as well your experience, and I totally agree that they are for illustration and not for regular iPad use :)
Thanks Asia for sharing everyones opinion! I didnt like it in the beginning but I was already painting on the ipad for some time without it so I guess I was used to painting without it. I didnt remove it and got used to it and can´t really tell if i think its better or not :) Probably is because of the protection. Thank you again, was super interesting!
Thanks Asia for sharing the honest review! After going through many mixed reviews on Paperlike online, I was really confused. But your video helped me decide and I ordered one with the link you shared, knowing well the pros and cons of it for artwork. I was looking for other products for which i had read good reviews like Elecom and Bellemond, but they were not available in my area.
Sorry for jumping in with an unrelated question. Which device would you recommend on the current market? I studied graphic design and Art in the 80's but never done anything with it, finally think it's time to use my gift and reconsider going digital. Thanks for the videos.
I used it and became noticeably scratched, pencil tip wore faster but mostly color. Major difference, color is less saturated. I’ve since stopped using it. Too expensive, replace tips too quickly and I don’t like the muted colors. I need to see the vibrant colors, I use an anti blue light tempered protector and enjoy it much more
I am a digital artist. And my issue that I have had ever since I started using an Apple Pencil is that the screen is too slippery for me. And I can do much better on paper. I can’t have a good grip to make a line not look like scribbles. Should I get a rubber nib? Or a screen protector?
i really want a good experience in drawing i just had my ipad yesterday. Im still discovering the device when I tried procreate with a glass protector its so slipper.is paper like fine to use? is it scary and ugly or I should just stick to glass protecter?😩😭
