The Ringer's J. Kyle Mann discusses Draymond Green's role in the Pace and Space paradigm shift from the last decade. In this clip from the thinking basketball podcast, we also discuss how paradigm shifts can "recycle," with the old becoming the new, and whether Draymond was merely lucky to come along at the right time and place (Golden State), or did he push a new paradigm forward by adapting to the newer game?

@mitchellholcomb1561

Only person that comes to mind is Kevin Garnett, and they are very, very different players. Especially since Kevin didn’t actually employ his point forward capabilities very often, as he tended to play alongside strong PGs. He certainly has the ability though, and flexed it occasionally.

Pippen and Garnett come to mind as all-time switchable great defenders (Pippen being the weakest since I don't think he could actually defend the 5) with a strong offensive package not centered around scoring (Green being the weakest of the three)
@Davivd2
@Davivd2 2 года назад
You are right. He's the most versatile player ever. I've never seen a defender that can guard every position as well as Draymond can. I've never seen a power forward that can lead the team in assists from the high post elbow position and push the ball up the floor as a playmaker on the fast break. I think that Lebron James could learn from Draymond as he is aging. If Lebron would operate from that high post elbow with off ball cutters it would add longevity to his game. It would certainly help the Lakers out. Trying to fill out a team of 3 and D players on veteran minimum contracts isn't working for them. Using a Warriors style offense with Lebron at the elbow would help those non shooters score from off ball movement.

6:28 “there are only so many notes on the scale”. That’s true of so much of life. I’ve always thought the same about movies - there is hardly anything original because there have been enough movies that all the major “notes” have been used. The differences in movies is the little things and the execution of those “notes”. And over time, certain “notes” in movies become more popular or more appealing so you see a shift. Same with basketball. Most notes have been tried in basketball but they change the notes on offense when defenses change their notes or nba rules change the game a bit.

@obnoxiouslakerfan

@@ryankirkpatrick8489 that’s a fair point since curry has influenced players at literally every single level, but draymond has done more than anyone to change the way that nba defenses and lineups work at the highest level. Positionless basketball, small ball, and big men who can float around the perimeter wouldn’t be as recognized without draymond’s singular influence. Shooting 3s is a trend that still would’ve arisen, though maybe not as precipitously, if we didn’t have curry and instead just saw the trend in guards like dame, harden, kyrie, etc.

One question from someone who never played Basketball at high level, but who has watched Basketball for decades: is it possible that many of these "going back into the 60´s or 70´s and focus on ball-movement strategies" were caused by small rule changes regarding defense that had an enormous influence on the game ? The "iso-ball-era" has been finished, the game became faster and more dynamic. Maybe that opened up the opportunity to focus more an ball-movement, team tactics and much more.

It's been around forever. Sure traditionally, every team wanted a big man to score since George Mikan. But in the situation where your best scorers aren't 7 footers in your front court, the point forward in a small ball line up has been the other option. 6'10 Bill Russell would protect the rim and lead the fast break off the defensive stop. He was never the leading scorer of his Celtics dynasty. Magic won the Lakers game six of his first NBA Finals by playing point forward in small ball line up. The 90's Bulls had Rodman and Scottie coordinating the defense and offense in a small ball line up.

He always reminded me a bit of Anthony Mason. Draymond was a bit more of a leaper, and he is a better ball handle, while Mase was a better scorer and might have even quicker feet, but there are some antecedents present. I would've liked to see the Nellie experiment last a bit longer, but you had a great player like Ewing but it was a different era. I remember how Riley used him as a center and when he was with the Hornets and Knicks he had some stretches guarding Pippen and Jordan as well as opposing Power Forwards and Centers. Draymond and the Warriors took it much further and obviously the era plays a big part as well. I can see Mase averaging like 17, 9 and 5 to 7 assist in this era or I can just as easily picture him being glued to the bench because of foul trouble. As much as it pains me as someone from The 'Land, even going back to MSU I've been a Draymond fan.

Steve Kerr is an excellent student of the game. Kerr played under Phil Jackson and absorbed the concepts of the triangle offense/defense. Kerr played for Greg Popovich twice and learned from that. Kerr was general manager of the Suns when D’Antoni was coach. Kerr understood D’Antoni’s system but also wanted big men to be utilized better. Draymond Green routinely has assists around 7 per game. Pippen had close to those numbers with the Bulls. Green is a floating defender. Pippen did that with the Bulls. Big men as facilitators goes back to Walton and daddy Sabonis. * Kerr understands all of this and Draymond’s role reflects that knowledge.

It’s a team game the narrative anyone could do it by themselves especially in this era is just dumb you need 10 guys who are good to win at nba level there is so much skill and athleticism on all teams that it often comes down to chemistry and focus as a group which takes experience and confidence. He's the perfect tetris block that unlocks the GSW on both O + D What makes Draymond unique is the total package of him... And how he facilitates the greatest shooting backcourt of all time... And how he clogs the D and clamps even great O players so that his team aren't exposed by Kerr running small ball... Yes Walton + Arvydas Sabonis were the greatest passing 5s (until Jokic) + operated as O hubs Yes Rodman was a 6'6 wing with such a phenomenal physique he can guard Johnson, Bird + even slow Shaq enough for the double team to arrive But combine those two things AND great short roll O (because Curry is getting doubled) in a 4 v 3 setting AND his defence anchoring the team PLUS clamping his matchup a lot of the time... That's why Draymond is a Pioneer Others have done things that he does, sometimes even better than Draymond But I can't think of anyone that does everything he does...

Yeah. Seems more like the ideal 'small ball' big point forward. In a basketball era where perimeter players/wings have more lee-way to attack the hoop. Its funny because if you start with the premise that GSW was really the most successful basketball team to win a chip where their best player is a small perimeter player (legend in the making shooter btw), its funny how other teams have tried replicating the formula with their own versions. From your Dame/CJ combo, Harden small ball and currently Trae Young, those teams were waiting for their 'Draymond' to come and help unlock their team. But since they never did they just settled for it in pieces and the it never worked out in full. Which should be a pitfall reminder for the Hawks because defense has been a problem for them this season and as much as Trae would benefit playing more off ball, he won't be open to that idea fully without a teammate whose a good enough playmaker. So either they find their 'Draymond' or suffer the same fate having all these pieces that doesn't add up.

Reggie Miller and the impact of his style in his era. Julius Erving's greatness, dominance in the ABA and how he translated into the NBA. Last time the Knicks were good (70-73) The many times almost champions Lakers of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor and what they lacked to overtake the Russel Celtics. Mike D'Antoni's system with the Suns and Rockets and what it can bring to a team/player and how it comes short of being a winning strategy.

Draymond for sure deserves a lot of credit for the warriors system and offense. Yes Steph, Klay and now JP are hitting the shots but he is orchestrating it and delivering the passes on target. The reason steph and klay are so good is their off ball movement and they could not do that to the same level without Draymond. Yes there are elbow passers even chris weber, divac, sabonis, and others but draymond also snatches the rebound and dribbles up the court with speed then orchestras the offense at that tempo. Klay and steph are two of the deadliest trailers in the history of the game and they can do that because of draymond. He understands the game at such a high level that he asks himself how can I unlock these guys even more and get them good shots.

Peak Draymond( from a shooting standpoint) quite literally altered the floor. And to Kyle's point about there being post creators, it was often that these big mid post/ high post creators primarily used their scoring gravity to then unlock passing, so that too a degree is quite different from Draymond, and Draymond's ability to go coast to coast, push the pace+ play 4 on 3, puts him in quite rare company from a passing standpoint. Also I feel the Rodman comparison is inherently flawed to a degree. Dray doesn't play with the same rules neither does he play with the same level of defenders around him. Draymond perhaps will go down as one of the historically great weak side/ help defender+all arond defense in general, and his sense of positioning and timing is elite. So while there might be a few archetypes, as Kyle said, there are only so many notes but the player provides texture, Dray porbably has a texture of his own.

@MrE_
@MrE_ 2 года назад
@@jangardini7909 I mean he's a career 31% shooter so nothing to boast about. He only had 1 year where he was shooting 38% and any nba player can be decent for 1 fluke year, it's another thing to do that consistently. But also remember that nba teams in 2015 played different defense than in 2022. In 2015, playing a small ball center was unheard of, so nba defenses most likely left Draymond wide open for 3s since their center was worried about the paint. In 2022, it's a lot more common to play small ball lineups, so nba defenses adapted by having 5 elite perimeter defenders that can guard 1-5. So Dray wasn't getting the wide open looks he used to over the past few seasons, hence he's shooting poorly, hence his confidence in his shot went down, hence he refuses to shoot it and decides to playmake instead.
@jangardini7909
@jangardini7909 2 года назад
@@MrE_ what you said about open looks would make sense, if it wasn't completely false. Cmon you just need to watch a warriors game to see how open draymond is being left to shoot. He just doesn't take those shots. Also your "fluke year" arguement doesn't really stand. A young plauer coming into the league is expected to increase his shooting percentages, or at least keep them on track. Draymond did just that. He went from a bad shooter, increased up to elite in 2016 and then forgot how to shoot. The thing that i can't wrap my head around is the fact that in his last 6 seasons he is getting wider looks and he's shooting less but his percentages not only don't go back up but also keep decreasing year after year, this doesn't make sense at all. How is possible a regression like this one?

What if he wasn't drafted by GSW? The picks before and after him were traded to Dallas and Indiana(Originally Cleveland and Sacramento) Would he have a role on a team that isn't as offensively gifted as the Warriors? What NBA teams right now would need a guy like Draymond? Plus would he get same contract on those same teams? To he's a system player.

I don't think Kerr unlocked Draymond's defensive potential. I think it is moreso Draymond who provides such amazing defensive impact for Kerr. If you look at one of Coach Nick's interviews with Steve Kerr, he literally talks about how Draymond will occasionally scram switch/late switch a small guy (like Curry) out of a mismatch so the Warriors can cover everything on defense. I'm paraphrasing but Kerr was like "yeah we don't even tell Draymond to do anything in that situation. He'll literally just tell Steph or someone else to scram so they don't face a bad match up". I think the Warriors honestly just got lucky by drafting one of the smartest defenders ever!

They can't get 'Draymond' in one player. So its a matter of leveraging his skillsets in at least 2 players with defensive qualities. Ironic enough when the Kings/Pacers trade happen that swapped Haliburton for Saba, I was more higher on the Pacers getting the better 'Draymond' of that trade. Successful roster building to hide Saba's weaknesses is a commitment that not many team rosters have. As of Hali, he is a tall playmaking guard works extremely well various lineups where he's the PG and there is some unpopular advanced metric that measured player efficiency based on what they do in terms of offense for playmaking, rebounding and defensive value. Draymond topped that metric but guess who came in 2nd? Haliburton.
