Thanks for putting this wonderful and funny movie out there for us to watch. This is the first time I've seen it, and I love Betty Hutton. Ever since the first time I seen her in "Annie get your gun " I have loved her. She is amazing to watch, so much energy, and i just love this voice she came up with, it fits so well for Georgina. Betty and Carey both put a great comedy out.
I've just watched this again. Even better than I remembered. Betty is wonderful. Such a departure for her. A completely different person. Now that's an ACTRESS!!! Thanks, again.
Same here: watched it twice, I mean. Great actress and a truly great script. Almost unbelievably dopey but absolutely engaging and fun! It has a vaudeville quality to it. Delicious.
Movie over and I'm still smiling; I don't think there's any way this film could have been produced today and begin to compare with this production, the older films and actors have a special flavor and talent! This was so fun and thought provoking, dreams! Life!
True story. I started watching this, not knowing who the actors were. I heard that voice and thought she sounded like Betty Hutton, but I thought no, she has brown hair. What a surprise to find out it was Betty all along. Absolutely love her energy and sincerity.
Thanks Hutton Gluttons! I'm a lifelong fan of Betty Hutton's and familiar with all of her work (my favorite film of hers has no singing, oddly enough, which I regret, is 'The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek'), and I've always wondered if in this one instance (in 'Dream Girl'), where she sings the soprano solo of Kyo-kyo San (Butterfly), Un Bel Di (One Fine Day) from Act 2 of Puccini's 1904 opera Madame Butterfly, may have been dubbed, but I haven't found any credits indicating it, which goes to prove just how enormously talented she was as a singer (not that all of her work wouldn't prove it already), and as a performer/entertainer I've always rated her #1. Her vocal range, and the range of her tonality and expression, her capacity for fast tongue-twisting lyrics, her facial and physical movements, from head and shoulders to her hips and toes, as she interprets lyrics and acts them out, every performance was solid gold, so it's really no surprise she could sing operatic soprano as well as any of the very best.
A lot of people didn't know that Betty Hutton trained for 6 months to do her own trapeze work for the movie The greatest show on Earth in 1951 and also was awarded the photoplay magazine award for the favorite actress of 1950 by Cecil B DeMille.
@@candellina6 even her co-stars snubbed Betty on the set of Annie get your gun. Judy Garland had to be replaced for that movie because she was so high on pills and another stuff. You could see it in the film takes of Judy playing the part that she was a wreck at that time.
Betty Hutton was one of the most talented women in Hollywood. She was an excellent comedienne and could she sing! The camera loved her. But she seems to have been emotionally fragile. One of Robert Osboure's (TCM's) favorite interviews was with her, she says one of the reasons she dropped out of making movies because during Annie get your gun the entire cast hated her? This seems strange to me, but this was her perception, at least - maybe it was true, but maybe not. She said she felt it was because people felt she stole Judy's and Ethel Merman's role. (I am just quoting this interview) She seemed the type to "wear her heart on her sleeve" and Hollywood is a tough place. She later became involved in a Catholic retreat and found personal peace, getting some advanced education and involving herself in faith and volunteerism. She did seem very happy. Good for her.
That is so true after Annie get your gun Betty starred in The greatest show on Earth while filming this picture Cecil B DeMille gave her the photo play award for the favorite actress of 1950. Like when she told Robert Osborne she felt hurt what other actors were saying she stole the picture from Judy Garland which wasn't true. Judy Garland got fired after she attempted to do Annie get your gun. Judy Garland couldn't do the picture because she was so hung up on alcohol and pills.
Funny thing as talented as Ethel and Judy were they didn't have that it factor stealing the role with talent isn't stealing. She set the standard for the role . Down to earth gets knocked down gets right back up.
I'm inclined to think Hollywood would be a tough place for an actress, especially a vulnerable one.I'm remembering what happened to Judy Garland, when she lost her popularity.
From what I know of Betty Hutton she had a horrible youth and was raised in a terrible place. It was actually a bar or maybe even a Bordello. She used to entertain the customers as a teen And that is how she developed her talent as so many young entertainers learned And that is how she developed her talent as so many young entertainers learned In Vaudeville they were out in front of the customers at a young age. With a youth like that I don't think you can expect her to be balanced. From everything I heard her say it seems her entire life was a search for Love real love.
I'm back again. I really like this movie. And I love this character that Hutton created here. And Macdonald Carey is perfect with her. Thanks again for sharing it with us. Love from San Diego, California.

Over many very enjoyable viewings, this has become a real favorite of mine. I just LOVE Betty Hutton in everything she does, and she is so charming in this movie!!!!! Thanks again for posting. Love from San Diego, CA.
I haven't watched this yet, but definitely will. I recently watched "And the Angels Sing" a second time. I had never heard of Betty Hutton and that movie was thoroughly entertaining and hilarious. Fred MacMurray co-starred with Betty Hutton and the "Angel" sisters. Very funny musical numbers and great acting all around by the whole cast.
This was the most delightful film I have seen in years!!! Positively loved it! Thank you so much for posting. :) I 'loved' her voice. It was perfect for the part!
@@debi909 Dana Andrews was somewhat of a functioning alcoholic, but eventually his career was impacted. After years of struggling he overcame the disease and in his later years became an advocate for the National Council on Alcoholism.
Why do people assume that these film stars like Betty Hutton, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, etc...had tragic lives? Betty Hutton found Father McGuire and God. The final third of her life was the most fulfilling of all. Judy Garland's life was not tragic. Her death was tragic. Marilyn Monroe's life was not tragic. Her death was tragic.
@@brianoyler706 I think that's an opinion. They absolutely experienced tragedy. Judy was abused and bullied. Drugs & alcohol. Marilyn went through constant heartbreak. Idk what your definition of tragedy is....
Yay!!!!!!one of the Best movie’s I’ve seen for my whole lifetime! Thank You 😊 I laughed so hard and rewound the dinner part where he’s speaking about the thickening of the wine 🍷 with honey 🍯. As well as the opera part. What a treat.
Well, that was a wonderful comedy with a great plot and certainly extremely hilarious and full of wisdom dialogues...they had some of the best lines toward the end of the movie which made it a worthy-watch for me. I haven't enjoyed so much a comedy in a long time :))
Excellent movie!!!! "Dream Girl" The Poem "IF" by Cippling is 1 of my Favorite mentioned by the Actress Betty Hutton in the End, her character was delightful; wise, quick with words & lovely! So far in the movie Georgenia is 24 and in love with her newly married brother in law, also she's a day dreamer and we hear her thoughts. She has a sweet voice and very pretty. The movie is cute and wonderful worth watching more than once! 4 1/2 ⭐️
This movie was sooo good, I loved every minute of it. And by the way....she resembles me and daydreams like me, I love to imagine the things that still haven't happened and day dream....I talk to myself just like her, and I even have the same name.....Georgina,. How about that,. What a movie. The story of my life or the one I always daydream I could have. May God bless you all.....happy holidays to u.
Betty cracks me up in this movie. I can relate to how she fantasizes what life should be. But the Madam Butterfly is so funny, at the same time, those ending notes, crush me to the point of tears, as they always do. Such beauty!🥰
God bless you Betty i always enjoyed your movies. After Betty was a success in Annie get your gun in 1950 her fellow cast members treated her so badly on the set because she replaced Judy Garland in the role of Annie. Judy Garland was fired from the movie because she was strung out on alcohol and pills.
All through her number Drunk With Love, I kept imagining Carol Burnett singing it on her variety show. It was exactly the type of song she excelled at.
Offbeat and charming in a quirky way. Fun to see Betty in something so different. I think she's wonderful in this. And as for Mcdonald Carey......Yum!!! I have to admit that having seen this, I have a strong craving to see Betty back to blond and cutting loose with "Murder, He says!" Thanks for this treat. I love the name "Hutton Gluttons". Perfect.
Apparently the general public agreed with you. According to Betty Hutton herself, "Dream Girl" played to mostly empty movie theatres at the time of its initial release as word of mouth killed the film. The public wanted the old blonde rambunctious Betty back shouting Murder He Says. But I personally think this is one Betty 's best work and evidence that she could extend her acting range.
I love this movie, saw several tiimes. Great script, fantastic acting, so many funny lines! "Ever since high school geometry I hated triangles"! Wonderful young Betty Hutton. What a tragic life she had.
Why do people assume that Betty Hutton, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, etc...had tragic lives. False!!! Betty Hutton found Father McGuire and God the last third of her life which was the most fulfilling. Judy Garland was humorous and witty. Her only tragedy was her death!! Marilyn Monroe was neurotic and sensual. Her death was tragic!!!!
@@brianoyler706 Due to all respect, this movie was all about Betty Hutton. I care less for 2 other actresses you mentioned. I never watched any of the movies with Judy Garland, and I think all she was known for that wierd Wizard of Oz. Betty Hutton had tragic life. Incredibly talented she left Hollywood pretty early because of continuing men sexual harassment. Large part of her life she struggled with addiction. She was living a very lonely life, her own daughters didn't want to see her. And she was dirt poor, while she was one of the biggest star in her time! Especially while living in New York. She eventually moved to the Desert and was lonely, isolated. She also died alone and her family refused to come to her funeral. Check your facts straight. There's no assumptions here.
I find comedy hard to find funny but this hit it right - Betty Hutton's range of expressions and personality in general were so off the cuff funny and so was McDonald Carey -a too funny story about an honestly flakey nerdy girl and a guy just crazy enough to fall for her - I love her dresses too - just over the top!
Gut renching funny and the writing is fenomanal people were so witty back then , this girll is so unique she reminded me of Lucille Ball , great movie 👍
Bravissima Betty Hutton for great facial expressions and vocal inflections which credibly portray her as the girl who almost, but not quite, knows what's happening right in front of her !
