Dream Shop and Moving (#14) 

Hey guys. I did not know about April, but have now subscribed. She has done some really cool things. After looking for a long time, I bought nice rural acreage property in California and was going to build a small retirement house and a shop, and grow my own food, and mill my own lumber. I have invented a new kind of agriculture and cuisine and that is what I will be blogging on and having a RU-vid channel about. And I am probably going to start a consumer supported small custom farm to raise really healthy food for families. But in California, anywhere in the state, you now have to use fireproof siding and roof, put sprinklers in the ceiling, install an "engineered" septic system (at least ten times more expensive), and they now require every new house anywhere in the state to have a solar power system. You have to have triple pane windows, and put in a lot of "approved" air tight insulation. It does not stop there, once built, you have to pay for an expensive "licensed" professional to constantly inspect your engineered septic system. I designed and build a house in California in the seventies while in college and I built it using recycled materials. The entire Building Code was summarized in a 76 page booklet. I designed it myself. Now if you stacked them on top of each other the building code is over three feet tall. It is now almost impossible to design your own house "to code" in places like California because there are so many specialized requirements. So I sold that property and am still trying to figure out where I am going to land, but I can't wait to get out of California. I bought a steel shop building kit for only $7K, and it is in storage. You can find really good deals on large steel shop buildings. What would be cool would be to have a neighborhood of like minded people, each with their own shop and tools, who can help when needed, share ideas, make suggestions, and that way everyone does not have to have every kind of tool. I have a small backhoe, a robotic bush hog/lawn mower, a huge powerful chipper shredder, and a self propelled leaf vacuum/shredder, and a lot more, including a "souped up" powerful garden tractor. I am getting set up to make my own "hempcrete" to use to insulate a nice shipping container house, and an aircrete tool set for lots of projects. Once the house is built, the hempcrete tool set is not going to be used very much -- at least by me. But it would be useful to have such a tool set "in the neighborhood". There are a lot of tools, not everyone needs to have in their shop but would be useful to have in the neighborhood. OK. I got that off my chest. Whew, I feel a lot better. Thanks.

I totally agree with you, it's amazing how much calmer and happier I feel in a clean yet well-designed space. I didn't really realize this until I moved out of my college apartment but my mood has been a lot better since I've moved back home. Mostly because I can see tangible art pieces and furniture pieces that are tied to precious memories and I can adapt them to my needs/liking. Also, your dream shop sounds really cool. Im kinda getting excited to seeing that space in my lifetime too 🤗

Seeing you guys talk about ideal workshop (especially Evan's ideals of just having all of the screws and etc) makes me think you guys should watch more of Adam Savage's Tested. His workshop is amazing and he also has a few videos on shop furniture and its super interesting in my opinion?

Adam Savage's Tested has a playlist dedicated to shop organization. He's build some nifty, mobile, organization stations. Recommend watching (or re-watching?) when you get to a larger space.

There ideal workshop sounds like a maker version of linus media group.

You could also just buy a mess of a house for your business (not sell your current house) and fix it up for content. It'll give you 1-2 years of projects and you can sell it in the end and start again :) That way, you earn some extra money at the end as well.

How about giant bookshelves on heavy duty casters that could be your “walls” on one side (katelyn think giant pegboard with cool display) and storage shelves, drawers, drawer glides on the other side. Modular walls

Build a motorized 20' diameter lazy Susan for your backdrops, then build your shop around it.

Great interview! I don't keep up well with some of the RU-vid stuff, but you've given me a consistent stream of people to check out, and that's pretty rad! This is one of my favorite games you guys play! I was able to get almost all of the songs I know, although I felt a little slow when it took me a while to pick up on One Week, and the Daft Punk song Katelyn nailed before I did. I'm sure you don't want to overplay it and burn it out, but I would welcome it whenever y'all choose to play!

Day dreaming about a bigger shop too.. I have a standard UK 9 x 18 single garage and I've reached saturation point! ..would love a shop half the size of April's ... she must make a heck of a revenue from her videos to be able to build that and buy all her shiney new equipment... looked into small prefab industrial units and the buildings can be had for £40k or less .. it's total daydream though sadly. Great pod cast guys :)

When you get serious about workshop hunting I can share some lessons learned...not that we have the perfect solution yet :)

You should check out some of Linus Tech Tips video's on their building and what they made. They moved into a huge space and within a year, they are struggling for space again :) You'll fill up however much space you'll get. You know now that you can function in your two-car garage; extra space will just just make things easier, but keep in mind, that you don't need more because people love what you do and how you do it right now.

I'm very interested to know your viewer demographic, idk if RU-vid gives out that info but I'm intrigued

Great podcast..... As for the shop/home, why not rent a big warehouse and then build a house inside the warehouse :D ... Like using several containers to make the home, so something new an unique.
