Andreas Helgstrand has made his legacy in dressage a household name. From symposiums, horse sales and horse show acquisitions he is a name that garners a lot of attention in the circles of dressage.
At the FEI World Cup Grand Prix in Amsterdam, the commentary went from gushing about Queensparks Wendy to gushing blood in just a matter of a few minutes.
Andreas Helgstrand was eliminated half way through his grand prix dressage test resulting in this dressage disaster.
The worst part of this dressage disaster is Natasha Baker trying to gaslight fans into believing that this is a totally normal and acceptable part of the sport. I disagree.
I suspect with the elimination of marshmallow fluff, known here at Dressage Hub as Fluffgate, we will see many more blood eliminations in the dressage ring.

We had a few horses who came from Andreas. They were all permanently scarred on their sides from spur marks. I was a groom on the FEI dressage circuit for a top rider and you wouldn’t believe the tightness of those nosebands and the rigidity and intensity in which these horses are ridden at this level. I have seen unimaginable things like illegal surgeries to sever nerves, etc… Every tail flick is a sign of distress… horses deserve better.

A danish documentary, Operation X, a journalist is hired as a groomer, and with a hidden camera the undercover journalist reveals that the horses at Helgstrand Dressage have been systematically treated in a way that is deeply worrying and goes against basic principles of responsible training and animal welfare. Recordings of riders and statements from groomers at Helgstrand Dressage reveal that whips, sliding reins and spurs are used so hard that the horses get deep wounds, swelling and scars. A reviled training method, roll cure or hyperflexion, which is bending the horse's head with force and is described as violence against the horse, is also used by Helgstrand Dressage. Both Helgstrand Dressage, Andreas Helgstrand personally and several riders will be reported to the police for animal cruelty.

@privatemailcall6011 Год назад
Yikes!!!! Like, omg! From what I could observe, I had already detected a seemingly pink foaming color from the horse's mouth. Not a hint, but a scary amount, to me. In my entire personal, hands on, riding & showing career, as an amateur owner to ride, I can truthfully & honestly say, that I've never caused bleeding from my horse's mouth. None of my horses mouths ever bled from bit misuse or abuse. Nor did my professional trainer ever have such an occurrence. Anne Hornbeak, actually never even allowed me to ride, using anything other than a nicely fitted, kind, training snaffle. And I rode for 30 years in training. Arabian show circuit, to winning National Championships. Then transitioned to Dressage, on a wonderful Schoolmaster, a Prix St George level, National Championship winning, Naborr daughter, Arabian mare. (My trainer won Prix St George Championships, on mare, TC Naari, not me). Never a hint of bad hands or bad bits. Then, I purchased another Schoolmaster. A warmblood this time. A beautiful & talented Danish Warmblood gelding. Trained by Leif Sorenson, of Denmark. Never a drop of blood. Never a head shake. Of course, remember, I wasn't allowed to ride with any bit other than a soft training snaffle. However, when my professionals bridled up, for their advanced wayyy upper levels of riding & showing, I still never saw blood, nor a head shake, nor in the face, nor pulling, nor any form of riding that did not reflect superb Horsemanship, kindness, gentleness, and an impressive teaching, & riding method, requiring that, the horse comes first. The horses brain, mind, body, the way a horse thinks, feels, reacts, responds, & why. If I'd ever yanked or snatched in my horse's mouths, or displayed any attempt to blame my horse for negative behavior, caused by a human error,.... well, let's just say, it wouldn't have been pretty. I've rambled on, here, to express, that no matter the level, there is never an excuse for bit abuse, nor any abusiveness in riding. Now, to be fair, perhaps the blood was not from human misuse or abuse. I hope not. But, I must say, the rider was seemingly overly dramatic in gesturing, to refute the knowledge of the cause of blood, & certainly disputing having any accountability. But how juvenile, to throw your arms up, like, huh? what? I don't know anything about what's going on here. Umm, well, you should know everything, Mr upper level. At least show concern, or pretend having concern for this horse. Your lack of showing outward love & outward concern for this horse, almost reveals your prior knowledge, by acting like a bafoon of surprise, when eliminated. At least show compassion towards the horse, who is experiencing pain.

@@Gent47 Hmmm, obviously fed those sharp edged sugar cubes. I would agree to too many sugar cubes causing enhanced foaming, in a human attempt to get the horse playing with & accepting the bit. Old hopeful trick. Never used it. Made too much of a slobbery messy mouth. Plus, it doesn't make magic happen. Horses really aren't that easily fooled. The trick is, to use a soft snaffle, soft hands, earn trust, think like the horse, understood communication, release pressure, train with intense patience, within mental & physical capacity & capability. If you're one with your horse, and its all good and gravy, then the horse is relaxed, knows its job, wants to please, gets praised, develops without stress, not forced, not fearful, and if the horse is able, the horse will. I will draw the line at blaming a melting sugar cube, being sucked on by a horse, who apparently is a pro at eating sugar cubes, to suddenly bite down spastically, on a tiny melting sugar cube, with enough chomp to bite its inner cheek or pierce its own tongue, to cause dripping blood. Probably not. UNLESS, everything is so fkng tight, punishing bit & the noseband is cinched buckled so tightly, that the horse couldn't help but bite its own tongue. Sugar cube or not, that's a problem. And, to reiterate, to your own words & comment, that, he is a strong and powerful rider, and such an expert & that he has only to look a horse in the eye, to control it...... Ummmmm lol lol lol. Like a trance rider? lol. Look into my eyes you beast of burden. Now, you will do as I transmit orders from my eyes, through your eyes and into your brain... Now, dance you beast! Oh wait a minute, I have to mount up, so remember my eyes.... Do as my eyes told you, before our ride begins. Do not defy my eyes.... lol. Ok. Nahh. One of my trainers lives in Denmark. Leif Sorenson. He was an Olympian, & trained an Olympic team, for Denmark. He regularly came to America, with his Stallion, Rambo, that he sold to Richard Freeman. He also clinician trained an Olympian, from our barn, who was on the Olympic team with Steffan Peters. He brought my Danish Warmblood to America. He trained my trainer, who already had her Gold medal. My point is, with all of my blessed & humbling exposure, to such high level, accomplished riders, I never never ever, in 30 years, saw one drop of blood foam from a horses mouth, in our stables, or our circle, and damn sure not from a sugar cube. But hey, Idk, I wasn't there. I cant accuse. The reference to being strong and powerful, should describe the horse, not the rider, nor the riders hands nor heels. Strong & powerful horse, & a patient, soft handed, talented, balanced & trusted rider. One who thinks like the horse. And reads & understands the horses eyes & body language. Equal understanding and trust.

Having the horse relaxed, making it all seem effortless - those factors were necessary, otherwise it wasn’t really dressage. Today, I can hardly bear to watch it. This is what should happen. Stop in the moment and DQ. If having a conscience isn't possible maybe being embarrassed in competition will get the hint across. And then "oh what a shame". Yes, a shame for the horse to have endured this the entire time in training as well. You can see in his movement that this horse is in a very unhappy state. Nosebands shouldn't be cranked, or severe bits, overdone spurs. Dressage means schooling. The idea is to improve the carriage and balance of the horse, not shove it into frame and crank everything down until they're barely able to breathe or function.

@@estellekeating2285 that is not what I am talking about. It's the awareness of what happens when we put the gear on horses and either get them to pull something or ride them. Horses were not created for man. But for themselves. Yes, we have improved their capacity to work with humans. But there is a negative side. We do damage. I come from a farming background where we would mustard sheep cattle and there we would get off the horses and walk “ to save them” when they were really needed. Without understanding, farmers could see the impact of a man riding horses. It takes an atoll. Nowadays we can prove this through forensic analysis of skeletal remains and imagining. So no matter the design or type of riding mindfulness is required. If you want to see a great partnership between horses and humans I suggest you look at Klaus Ferdinand Hemfling and also some old dressage masters Alois Podhajsky. As well as other well-known masters who I have just forgotten By the way have ridden dressage and love the melting of two different species as one. The feeling is incredible. Cringe how he gave attitude in the end. I wish the judge had noticed much earlier it’s even visible from distance how red the complete one side of the horse’s mouth. Giving his best in agonizing pain 😢 Irregularity and obvious discomfort. I hope he will be in a good hand someday free from this demon.

I too can confirm, I've worken in both dressage and jumping on higher level and its horrible the daily abuse. I've stopped working in horses, dont want to stand by and watch. Or clean their mouths or bellies (blood) with a towel or treat the bumps from the whips.

The fact that he got an attitude instead of being concerned is alarming. I do not know much about horses but from my current knowledge, dressage is about mutual relationship and respect between the rider and the horse. Now it’s just seems to be about ribbons and money.

Dang... Before I saw this, I thought that he was one of the "better" dressage riders😬 I haven't seen Edward Gal getting called out for blood yet... or hasn't he gotten blood yet? It would surprise me if he hasn't, because I know he trains with LDR and Rollkur (because of his trainer, Kees Visser. He's a big advocate for Rollkur). (Edit: not Kees Visser, Sjef Janssen)

Lol what.. Kees visser was his trainer? 😂 he trained him from prison? He was just an owner, nothing more than a man with a lot of money, with a wife that loves dressage. Gal actually trains Tosca.. Nicole Werner has almost always been his trainer.. and Andreas is actually well known for his cruel methods. A lot of footage of him using rollkur.

This man and his ENTIRE TEAM needs to be permanently banned!!! Why are we not doing better? I am a head trainer at a A hunter/jumper barn and the thing I see on our side of the world are disgusting also. We literally just had to pass rules for USEF (I’ve been championing it for a few YEARS NOW) that you can’t continue to lounge horses that are exhausted… I mean we really have to tell people this? Kids these days have their horses so over prepped that they get on at the show, after not riding for weeks and weeks. We keep the horses fit and going for them. I refuse to do this. If you’re not taking 2 lessons a week and your horse isn’t on a training program then you can’t show. Period. The only drugs I allow are therapeutic levels of robaxin and over course horses that have approval for previcox, etc. we also do adaquan blasts on our guys every 6 months. I do 2 of my training rides a week just walking the fields. I just got there a few months ago and most these horses have schooled in the ring only. Trainers are getting lazy…..
