After watching Episode 3 of Kenobi, we've reached one inescapable conclusion - this show hates its own protagonist, and goes out of its way to make him as dumb and useless as possible.
@@tcp2518able how about in the first episode when reva starts threatening the villagers, out of a crowd of like 20-30 ppl she conveniently picks Owen, probably the one man there that has connection to Kenobi lol I thought it was super far fetched, like winning the freaking lotto
This has Kathleen Kennedy’s fingerprints all over it. It’s like watching Last Jedi all over again with weak scripts, sarlacc sized plot holes, strong female characters who constantly dominate weak male characters and a worn out old Obiwan instead of a worn out old Luke.
Yup, but the blame doesn't end there. Who allows this woman to tear this apart and keep her job? No one likes anything she touches, so why is she still employed? This woke agenda is supported by the studio itself.
The worst thing is: Kenobi was so well known in the Clone Wars for his diplomatic and talking skills. Without even using a lightsaber or a blaster sometimes, he could stop fights before they even happened. That's how he earned the nickname "The Negotiator". Hell, even his flagship was named after him. And now here he is being told and lead around by a 10 year old and exposing themselves to a couple of stormtroopers!!
Tearing down the heroes that men looked up to as boys is a great way to destroy their own sense of heroism and value. I didn’t want to think it, but it looks like this stems from a contempt for men and the male heroic myth. It’s sad that that’s what they think it means to empower women. Men and women both deserve better.
A lot of the bizarre and lamentable stuff about Disney Star Wars makes sense when you consider that it's largely written by left-wing feminists. eg tearing down and embarrassing the traditional male heroes, young Mary Sue female characters, shoehorned diversity
That is entirely what it is about. The entire world view of the people running these franchises is shaped by Marxist critical theory. Their goal is to deconstruct male heros (especially white male heros) for their purpose of building a new mythology where men generally and white men in particular are portrayed unironically as members of an oppressive all powerful patriarchy while at the same time being weak and incompetent. (If white men are weak and incompetent I'm not sure how they created an all powerful patriarchy hell-bent on oppressing women and minorites. But we aren't supposed ask questions like that.) It would just be stupid and funny if their blatant bigotry weren't also incredibly evil.
Obi Wan was the ultimate "I will do what I must" character. Wallowing in pity and despair is a flagrant retcon of his entire persona. Having regret is one thing, but he wouldn't abandon his duty to protect others, preserve the Jedi way, and serve the greater good. His feelings on the state of the universe or the state of his own being would always come second. This is why this series is a non-starter for me as is most of the Disney SW lineup. They don't understand the IP, they just us its framework as a skin-suit to serve their own narcissistic and childish desires. It's pathetic and downright disrespectful.
Yep this is Obi-Wan, a guy who did not get wrapped up in romantic entanglements no matter what his feelings because of his Devotion to the Jedi Order, that guy! Just completely renounces the Jedi like every other idiot, so-called Jedi that Disney Star Wars writes, let's not forget the completely mind-numbing story of how Kylo Ren and a handful of Jedi (that joined him because reasons) managed to kill some 50 apprentices and set the temple on fire, all while Luke is unconscious for some minutes not to mention even if they had more time it would still be the dumbest thing ever
Three moments in episode 1 has me eye rolling. 1. The runaway Jedi pulling down two fabric sheets draped over some sticks as an obstacle to slow down the inquisitors... One of whom proceeds to walk straight through it. 2. The kidnapper that is walking after Leia who then proceeds to walk into a chest level branch and blurt out a pained sound as if he was hurt by the 2mph collision. 3. Some dumb random Jedi runaway tracks down and confronts Obi Wan without any explanation but the entire Sith order has spent 10 years getting nowhere in trying to track him. 😐
Also how they showed order 66, irl you would get how the jedi got beat since the clones have more numbers, but in the obi wan show a fucking jedi got killed by 2 clones! Like wtf you are a jedi who blocks blasters like you blink your eyes!
To be fair, the Fifth Brother actually had to walk AROUND the fallen canopy, thus delaying him for 1/2 more second, allowing the clever Jedi to completely get away.
Isn't sadness, bitterness and resentment the path to the dark side? Kenobi is a Jedi master, not a newbie . Whoever wrote this doesn't seem to know this about the Jedi
excellent comment. I don't care how out of shape Kenobi is. he was still trained as a Jedi and has the force in him. For him not even to sense various things is shameless. Plus, to allow bitterness, sadness to over come him, meand he was never a good jedi in the first place.
Jedi are supposed to USE those feelings of inadequacy to empower themselves, not become completely useless in the heat of battle. Whoever came up with the base story of this show completely fucked it.
Every strong male character that is brought back becomes sad and lonely: - Jake Skywalker in the Last Jedi - Boba Fett in the Book of Boba - Han Solo in The Force Awakens Same thing with Marvel, make the male characters weak, sad, lonely, and pining for a woman.
Tbf Boba didn't have much character it was the mystery and the design of his character why he was cool but Disney decided to make his character boring and weak to make other characters in his own show look better. Disney doesn't care for the IP they know they can make whatever they want and it will still sell because it is Disney they basically own everything
It is a sad event when there are clearly writers who can not write a children's book with crayons, writing a Star Wars story. This is a prime example of how substandard the writing is, actors who have to do their best with the script they are given, and an Executive Producer running the helm and screwing it up (again).
they are not screwing it up. They are destroying men cuz they are feminist. They don't care about money, but you better not take their money away. all a bunch of communist
I watched 5 min of Kenobi and my head was about to explode on how stupid it was. Kenobi was at some planet with young Leia and she convinced him to go on some transport driven by a mole guy then he slips up talking in front of a storm trooper squad that hitched a ride for no good reason, then he talks openly about being a Jedi in front of the driver 5 feet away, then they get betrayed by the mole but the officer of the new squad was actually helping the Jedi although how did she become a platoon leader??? Then they go to some repair shop and Kenobi acts like a pussy when Vader comes but is saved by some chick who shot like one shot and a whole platoon of storm troopers and Vader just kind of stop fighting. It was all so contrived it made my head hurt.
The laser gate is literally right out of Blazing Sadles. "The LePetomain through-way!? Aww what'll that @sshole think of next?" Does anyone got a dime!? Someone's got to go back and get a shot load of dimes!
The whole "Obi Wan has given up" thing would make more sense if he wasn't adamant in the first episode about training Luke (while arguing with Owen). How is he planning on training anyone when he's buried his lightsaber, stopped using the force, and become a weak old man? And the point about him being too weak to protect Luke is a great one. If he felt that responsibility then how in the world could he let himself become SO vulnerable? (Except against non-Force users, then he's basically John Wick until the plot decides he isn't)
Yep. Every other error aside, this is the biggest glaring mistake in the whole thing so far. If Obi's entire reason for being there is to watch over Luke, protect and then train him, why the hell would he let both his force powers lapse AND bury his sabre somewhere? If at any point the Empire, bounty hunters or whoever could waltz up to the ranch, what was his plan exactly? The worst Star Wars show to date. Frustrating to watch.
Also we know he does end up training Luke in A New Hope and he's still in touch with the Force in that movie. We know that the narrative is just going to end up returning to the status quo by the end of the series which makes the whole narrative completely pointless. It's like this show was literally created just so they could give Obi Wan the Last Jedi Luke Skywalker treatment.
@@waynemellors152 honestly I don't think Star Wars can be saved the amount of flaws shown here yet all the fanfare as kenobi runs from Vader and the most annoying defense "the lore never said this couldn't happen"(including Leia,Obi the coward, leaving Tatooine, etc)
Precisely. He’s not in a position to give up - people are depending on him. The fact he hasn’t trained for 10 years is a dereliction of duty that I don’t see as being redeemable.
@@teamtx1578 I'm confused. You're mad, because they gave a realistic period of Kenobi's life where he is depressed, and ridden with PTSD while all by himself on a dead end desert planet. And you think it's bad that they're making a show to show how he comes out of that depression, and later becomes the Obi-Wan we know in A New Hope? If your argument is well 'we know how he turns out' You must have hated the prequels cause we know Anakin turned out. There is a good amount of flaws in the show, I do not understand the people who hate that Obi-Wan is depressed, or has PTSD however. That is what you should have been expecting, especially even in Legends Obi-Wan was very depressed for a good amount of time on Tatooine.
Well even according to IMDb, this isn’t Kenobi’s show. They list the actress playing Leia before Ewan. He doesn’t even have top billing over a nobody on his own show.
Honestly, I'm now at the point that I blame the actors too. You know the script, you know what they're doing. If you take the check, you're as colpable as any other producer, director, writer. I mean, I understand the nobody who's trying to make it, but I have no more patience for the big names. So, F Ewan as well 😑🤣
And he is a producer on the show. What the hell does that tell you. Disney turned him into the cuck bitch they always wanted and he is just blindly allowing the character assassination and going along with it.
@@lumeronswift Yeah or Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, the awesome mindblowing stuff they do in those shows, the creators must know how to run a successful drug business or get out of anything in court.
I don't understand why everyone expected anything else from Disney... Here's how it looks to me. These characters are symbols of hope and inspiration. Disney writes characters in a way that takes the inspiration out of them, leaving you uninspired and unmotivated. There's something sinister going on with Disney.
there's something sinister going on at disney because your favorite kids movie character has realistic ptsd and has to go through a run of the mill character arc
Mind blowing they waste over 20 million per episode but cannot afford any writers of talent or someone who understands Star Wars and has a direction for the series or at least someone with common sense for this once great franchise.
Yep. The people behind this show obviously don't care about Star Wars. They're just a bunch of spiteful, self absorbed hacks messing around with something they don't care about or understand.
@@tipsyt1909 Filoni is tremendously overrated, and you'd think Book of Boba Fett would have made that apparent to anyone paying attention (not to mention his perpetual wank to golden child Ahsoka, even transferring so much connection to Light and Balance from the Skywalkers to her over and over again). But even if this were not the case, Filoni has no involvement with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. He is not a writer, not a producer, not an executive producer, not the director. In fact, interviews with director and showrunner Deborah Chow and Kathleen Kennedy indicate that writers were told specifically to shy away from linking Kenobi to The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett.
I thought it was ridiculous that Reva could 'mind-read' Haja to figure out where Kenobi was headed, but she conveniently couldn't read Owen's mind even though Obi-Wan was literally a couple meters away lol
@@kevinwilson455 Right. I don't think Disney understands what the force is, and more importantly, they haven't defined a ceiling on what kind of powers it grants. They use it willy-nilly to cover for their weak writing, and it shows.
I love how Disney thinks igniting a lightsaber is so special and theatrical. In the OT, Kenobi uses his lightsaber in public in broad daylight in a crowded bar to chop a nobody’s arm off surrounded by an imperial search party.
Think about with all the Jedi exterminated, how many Lightsabers would be circulating or even reverse engineered. Kenobi probably knew that none of those criminals would talk to the cops, even if they believed that the old man could be the last Jedi in existence. It didn’t even start a bar brawl.
Kenobi was in the process of leaving Tatooine. He didn't care who saw him because he wouldn't be sticking around for long. I am not defending Disney here, just making a point.
@@WorldPeace21 excellent point, he knew his destiny as soon as Luke’s adopted family were killed. I just want Ben to use that saber, instead of using a human shield and a blaster.
Totally agree…my thing is he’s so adamant about training Luke when he’s of age…wtf is he gonna train him to do? Run from a fight? How not to use the force??? How to live like a hermit?
Yeeeeah, I was of the mind that Kenobi had to suppress his Force connection in order to survive post-Order 66, but if that were the case, how could he hope to commune with Qui-Gon, and what would he have left to eventually teach Luke? :/ I want to give this show my benefit of the doubt so much, but the cracks grow bigger the more I think about it... which I guess in Kathleen Kennedy's eyes makes me a sexist, racist, etc...
I agree. That chase in the woods scene was written like it was a comedy scene in a children's television show,. All that was missing was quirky chase music.
Quality aint Dead though: Not only do with always have the Classics, like ST-Next-Generation or Cliffside or Internection-Cube, but we also get new good things like AMphibia or Owl House or Learning with Pibby.
They did the same thing to Loki in his show. Literally just isn’t evil anymore not as clever. Not as good of a fighter. Wtf is happening to these beloved characters :(
The best part is when Third Sister is at the end of the secret one way tunnel beating Leia somehow, who had a 10 min head start... absolutely fcking genius level directing. 👏
In the duel on Mustafar, Lucas actually added the moment--and in doing so explained and made canon--that two powerful force user can't just toss, push, grap, choke, etc. each other willy-nilly. There's the moment when both Anakin and Obi-Wan reach back and attempt to force push simultaneously, both of them digging in and focusing hard, but neither get any effect. Also, if we think of a scene like the fight between Yoda and Dooku, or even Luke and Vader in TESB, they/he throw inanimate objects around, but never use the force directly on their opponents. Force lightning seems to be the best technique for attacking other forces users.
isn’t there the chance that because Obi-Wan is rusty, he couldn’t utilize his force the same way to prevent himself from being grabbed? i think their first encounter played out relatively well given that vader has been slaying jedi and the show established Obi-Wan has been in hiding without training. Would I have preferred if it was a bad ass fight between them? of course, but i still think that will come
This is what I used to love about SW, just digging in to the mountain of lore and the rules of the universe. It's fun escapism. Can't do it with the new shite, it'll leave you sad and confused.
@@nick72799 well no, because they've already shown Obi-wan successfully use the Force to save Leia from falling. And even taking on the five armed Stormtroopers and the probe Droid, like they were nothing, just earlier that very same day. So perhaps this implies his Jedi powers no longer work at night? Perhaps that's when his 'self pity levels' are highest and he becomes impotent?

When he misspoke and said "Leia" in front of the stormtroopers, I facepalmed so hard. Like bro... you literally had one job. Edit: I also totally expected him to struggle and pull off a mind trick in that scene. It would have been awesome. My expectations were subverted masterfully.
One thing which I really hope they explain, is the fact that in A New Hope, the exchange between Vader and Kenobi "When i left you i was but the learner, now I am the master", or "A presence i havent felt since..." the first of which just makes Vader look like a forgetful moron if he cant remember him clapping Kenobi's cheeks as a clear master of the force over Kenobi as seen in the show
@Logan Draper Most of the old men I know are capable of kicking serious arse, one way or another. One of the thing that makes an aging or old character interesting is how they compensate for increasing debility.
Obi Wan Kenobi is insulting to those of us who have been fans of the Star Wars franchise since the OT/PT trilogies. I completely forgot episode 3 even dropped that’s how little I cared for this show. XD
Agreed. This show is absolutely pathetic and it’s aggravating that people think that this is good. The only thing this show has going for it are the performances and even that is hit or miss at times.
@@chasehedges6775 The only characters I actually cared about where the returning ones from the Prequel Trilogy. Even then it’s not the same since I know George Lucas isn’t creating Star Wars anymore and this is nothing more than Disney shoving politics into everything. Lol
"Leia needs protection as much as Luke" Isn't that why Kenobi entrusted Leia to his trusted ally Bail Organa so that she has the protection of the Alderan royal family so that he was free to keep watch over Luke??! Ive not watched this show yet, but its not looking promising, other than for disappointment. Thanks Disney.
Yeah, is he not the king of an entire planet and a member of the galactic Senate? He literally has the entire planet's population as his command and limitless numbers of people to protect her. Luke only had his anonymity and Ben Kenobi to protect him.
Yeah. Apparently Bail got retarded. Sending the Empires most wanted person after Leia is not a smart thing by anyones standards. Dude has an entire planet, he has money so he could buy Mercs or bounty hunters to get them. Nobody's gonna find out about her heritage, there's hundreds of trillions of beings in the galaxy, why would anyone piece that about Leia? And Kenobi knows where Luke and Yoda are, so if he gets tortured and he spills his guts, then goodbye any hope of restoring the Jedi order ever again.
That line was a Kathleen Kennedy feminist moment. Leia is just as important as Luke. You know women are just as important as men don't you? They are hitting the audience over the head with that in a not so subtle way.
@@STONESGAM yes except it makes no sense since technically Leia was better protected than Luke ever was. Kathleen Kennedy was a poor choice to take over Lucas arts. Political motivation should never take priority from creativity and imagination in cinema.
I cant believe that people behind this show looked at the Leia chase scenes and agreed that everything is fine with them, are there any writers or directors working there or just woke activists?
It seemed like a live action bit from rebles. It was dumb, but it didn't bother me much. They got her and ransomed her to get obi and it worked. Good enough for me.
The part when the woman literally sees the branch, observes the branch, figures out what species of tree the branch belongs to & some how manages to speed walk into the branch and be knocked on her ass???
Its like they havnt even watched the films - remember Kenobis iconic line from a new hope; 'The force will be with you, always!' This series Kenobi has kinda forgot how to use the force!
By the time Yoda dies in return, along with the ending of episode 3 where they are "supposed" to learn communing with the dead and life extension techniques, where it's implied that their age and use of the techniques diminish the overall potentcy they wield. Even in spite of this, yoda's "long have I watched this one" implies the functional scrying he's doing over luke, like he did with anakin. Which implies he also was watching over leia "no there is another" (which the this TV series is retroactively fucking up that scene). It's all a hot mess.
There are so very many, “A better story to tell here would be…” Like “Book of Boba Fett,” the large pieces are there, and a great story could be told here with stronger writers…. Hell; they could even push, “The MeSsAge!” IF it was wrapped in a strong enough story. Can you imagine if Kenobi was tripled down on training, turning himself into a weapon and part of his arc was realizing Luke needs to grow up and be a kid before any training is started AND needs to idolize the hero Anakin was before being told who Vader used to be. You could push anti-“toxic-masculinity” and push a Vader and Kenobi fight that has them beyond where they are in Revenge of the Sith to imply there were reasons they were pussyfooting around each other on the Death Star. Add some “Sith Training” scenes with Vader and Palpatine where he chastised Vader for thinking and fighting too much like a “Jedi” to make that “I was but a learner,” work. Jedi Master vs Sith Apprentice -
So the reason they basically nerfed him and had him regress is much the same reason they did it with Luke. Firstly, it was to denigrate and tear down the old character, and secondly because they don't know how to write a powerful character. One of the problems they mentioned in interviews with the original writer of the sequels (who was let go while the project was still in pre-production) was that he was having the problem where as soon as these powerful, competent characters like Jedi Master Luke showed up all the problems were solved. They had no idea how to make a conflict that was on the new characters' level but still involve the OT guys in the story. So they solved it by stripping them of all their power and authority. Han is no longer a general (and was never the galaxy-class diplomat he became in the EU) and is back to grifting; Leia is no longer a Senator (and never was the chancellor or premier or whatever that she was in the EU) and is just back to running a little band of rag-tag soldiers in a hopeless situation (somehow), and Luke is no longer Grand Master Luke (and the Jedi were never resurrected like they were in the EU) and he's back to living in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere and impotently griping about everything. They couldn't handle those characters and the competence and intelligence they would have brought to the table and so had to dumb everything down to a level they COULD manage. Same thing now with Obi-Wan. We know what he was before this, we know what he was after this. Hell, in Rebels we see him pretty much JUST after this (I'm pretty sure that's still canon, right?). But the writers can't handle competent Obi-Wan so we get whoever this retard is.
I mean if you assume that ANH is the golden standard of Star Wars writing you're not gonna go far in scriptwriting. Lucas got around that issue by changing the stakes. Anakin was so incredibly powerful but that was exactly his downfall. Upping the stakes is bog-standard writing.
@@isakaldazwulfazizsunus7564 I'm not advocating for Dragon Ball-Z power escalation or anything like that. It's less a matter of power levels than it is just competence, which is a very different thing. But mostly I'm criticizing them for not having the imagination to create a scenario that new, entry-level characters could solve without the OT guys stealing the show. I can think of any number: the old guys are distracted with some other crisis, or they're too comfortable resting on their laurels after decades of peace, or the situation the newbies are sent to deal with turns out to be much worse than previously thought, etc. etc. In any case, power escalation is the path they chose anyway. Remember the Death Star? Here's an even biggerer Death Star! Remember the Emperor? Here's an even eviler Emperor! The sequels are garbage from any angle. I expect little more from these shows.
I love how Kenobi walks around with an open carry light saber and in a robe which practically all Jedi wears in all of the SW movies. “Oh, I am a farmer, and we are just on a tourist trip in this random mine planet, because that is what farmers do, traveling around in random industrial zones for fun”
Then again, I live in a state that until more recently, people open carried AR-15s in Walmart. If it helps, his light saber is shaped like a miniature hookah.
Well, in fairness, a strong, noble white male character like Obi Wan remaining strong and noble in the show that bears his name would've been pretty damn depressing to KK.
Well, this sucks. I exclaimed "this is utter garbage" after ep 3, but my kids are enjoying themselves, and wifey says "oh dear, they just aimed this series at kids" (despite my daughter freaking out when they showed the most violent scene in all star wars: anakin on fire with no legs). I was like "meh, ok maybe it will improve, and for that matter, basically everything in star wars history makes absolutely no sense, so its just more of the same". Then wifey sends me this video, which basically confirms everything i was complaining about verbatim.
The "its for the kids" thing doesnt really work well when they showed him snapping kids necks and dragging Obi Wan through fire, though I attribute that to the moron writers having no idea how to show something as evil besides in the most blatant ways.
@@pete3011 Yeah my brother said "they made it for kids" and I was like bro? they just showed a kid's neck getting audibly snapped? I don't think that's a great thing for kids to watch
The saddest, and most maddening, part of how The Mouse has sullied SW, is how there are STILL people who will gobble up whatever SW content Disney drops regardless of it's quality, citing every possible excuse. Disney needs a comparable drop in subscriptions as Netflix has if a message is to be received that they need to try a little harder. Not that it matters much now.
Whatever man, i’m pretty sure if you can’t enjoy something yourself it’s your own problem, not mine. I wasn’t a fan of the sequels, but I ain’t taking the morally superior high ground over it. The shows on the other hand have been good. Mando was good, Boba was good (although a slow burn), and i’m enjoying Kenobi. I don’t think you lot will ever be happy.
@@connoranderson7432 nothing to do with moral high ground, but simple economics of supply and demand. The audience is demanding things like respecting legacy characters, logical narratives, smart dialogue with subtext, etc. Disney is not supplying that. My point is to hold content producers accountable and hit them where it hurts: subscribers. Better content won't happen until this message is sent. But to each their own, I guess. If vapid, mediocre content is your thing, more power to you for being able to shut your brain off. Enjoy :)
I think people are still holding out that it will improve, that Jon Favreau will (or might) be able to salvage it. I hope he does but I hold out little hope.
You know what’s hilarious? We’re actually going to NEED a Kenobi show after this show. One to explain how he bounced back from being a sad old fart to being the Jedi Master who beat Darth Maul in three moves because it was his freaking job, and he was the top Jedi of the age who was able to be on guard duty and still be deadly.
I still don't accept the fact that he's basically Jake Skywalker now. Obi Wan is, for better or worse, the poster child of Jedi perseverance. That man has lost everything in the pursuit and protection of the light, and you're telling me he just wanted to throw the only hope he has of a new Jedi knight (A New Hope, if you will), all for the sake of some sad-sads? I'm not complaining that Obi Wan falling to hard times is outright impossible and it should never happen. It's that Obi Wan falling to hard times misses the whole point of why Obi Wan is such a great character. We want to see Obi Wan conquer his demons the only way he knows how: his wits, his skills, and his trust in the Force. The fact that he needs to be lectured back into this mindset with nary a detailed explanation shows how little they actually cared for this character. Mando was a cynical plug to other shows, BoBF was a cynical plug to other shows, and Kenobi would no doubt be similar. Fucking wonderful, Dave Filoni and the rest of Lucasarts are charlatans.
Unlike Jake Skywalker, I am prepared to give them some credit for Jake Kenobi so long as his arc brings him back to Obi Wan Kenobi by the end of the series. Everything he stood for and believed in was torn down by the rise of Palpatine and the Empire.
Pretty sure that's what this show is doing. Hasn't finished yet so i guess we'll see, but you people ( just grouping you in with other comments I've seen with similar views ) have this view that Ob1 is being written extremely inept and stupid. We are not watching the same show clearly. The writings not great but passable thus far and seems to be on par with Star Wars. I say this as a huge fan. @@ItWillBeSteve yes and no. I personally think the writers aren't doing a good job here. Very little of it makes sense with this character specifically. I will warn you, as a super fan myself, to not get caught with Rose tinted glasses. Nostalgia is a powerful tool that can usually trick people into accepting poor plot lines and bad writing. Ewen McGregor coming back is helping to do just that. Here is why Kennedy said the early scripts were “wrong”. It probably showed Obi-Wan as he should be and black female Mary Sue didn’t have a huge role. Kennedy hates strong male characters. She and her ilk loves to tear them down to elevate the female characters. I hate it. As a woman, I want to see strong men and women alongside each other, like the movies and shows I grew up with. Lucas made a huge mistake in letting Kennedy be the boss of LucasFilms.
Yeah I agree .Edge of tomorrow with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt is a good example of a strong male and female character working together. They were also well written characters.

They could have changed a few things, and pointed out a few things, to make some of the stuff in the show make sense. Namely Obi-Wan's hesitance to use his lightsaber. If they had to wherewithal to pretty much say; "Look, I could use this weapon to cut down the empire's stormtroopers no problem. But then it gives me another problem. The damage a lightsaber does to a body is unique and unmistakable. Once the empire finds those bodies, it is only a matter of time before they realize that it was a lightsaber that killed them. What do you think will happen then? The empire will send a swarm of unnecessary troubles our way looking for a Jedi on the loose. THAT is why I hesitate to use this weapon, Leia. That is why I will resort to such uncivilized methods of combat. And NOTHING will change my course unless it becomes absolutely necessary for me to ensure your survival."
Right. That's what makes it so bizarre; in high sci-fi and fantasy, it's so EASY to invent bullshit like that without it being contrived or contradictory that any writer who fails to do it, and instead has plot holes, is just an incompetent buffoon. In a more grounded setting and plot, it can be harder to account for every little "What if?" the audience may ask, but they could easily explain how he can't use the Force willy-nilly because a guy like Vader can, even from a great distance, sense that shit, at least enough to give him a direction to search. But nah.
The writers are trying to write a character that has had a massive mental shock. Someone who has relied on faith their entire lives but now has lost their conviction. The problem is they themselves have faith in nothing and lack the ability and skill necessary to pull it off.
I agree, they’re trying to show him as still shocked that the Jedi failed and evil has taken over. But the problem is he’s going to have to make some changes in his character in this series to tie him up with ep IV Kenobi, who wasn’t at all like that
They did the same thing in Wheel of Time, a character who’s a stoic killing machine, turning him into crying wuss who is completely incompetent. It’s the only way males are allowed to be written. That’s why Top Gun did so great. Everyone (yes men and women) are pining for a male character who is manly and kicks ass.
I went into that show with low expectations and it was still a bitter disappointment. I busted a gut laughing when Lan tore his shirt open at the funeral. It reminded me of when Andy Dufresne finally made his way out of the sewage pipe in Shawshank.
I bet you love in episode 4 when they are sneaking across a huge wide open hanger full of storm troopers and officers and Lea is "hiding" under Kenobi's trench coat that stops about 2 feet from the floor. NONE of the dozens of enemy in the hanger notice Kenobi has sprouted a second pair of legs and that they are little girl legs.
@@TheRonaldbaxter - Except the first time we ever saw stormtroopers. They board the Tantive IV and blast their way through the rebel defenders. After that the only achievements of the stormtroopers, such as taking Echo Base, happens offscreen. It bothers me because heroes look far less heroic when their opponents are so easy to defeat.
To be fair, Luke ceased being important in any way (same with his dad) when the Sequels undid his entrie accomplishments and turned him into a miserable old man, all to make his replacement Mary Rey Sue Palpatine the true hero of the entire Skywalker story. By a lesser extent it also makes Obi-Wan a totally pointless character as he trained two characters that in the grand of scheme of things did jack shit by the end. So really when you think about it, what's even the point of making a show about Obi-Wan? Other then of course promoting up diversity hire inquisitor woman.
YEP! You could remove Luke from the saga and it wouldn't really change anything! He killed a single Emperor clone and helped blow up the death star, but the Empire/First Order just returned in like 20 years and destroyed the planets using Star Killer Base anyway... Then he refused to even help REY with Force Training, leaving Leia to train her. And then REY was the one who finally killed the REAL emperor and actually reunited the Galaxy at the end of Rise of Skywalker... So as Bail said "It was NEVER ABOUT THE BOY", and Luke didn't really save anyone...
You seriously think they made this show so they could add one black female to lore? Jesus Christ dude it’s not that deep. People love Obi wan and Ewans performance so they made a show and happened to add a black female and that pisses you off. Pathetic. You guys just look for anything resembling diversity and scream “wokeness” when it’s not there. You just want it to be to support the narrative. Is Hollywood too woke? Yes it is. Is this a woke hire or in anyway pushing a diversity agenda? Not at all, her race and gender haven’t been discussed whatsoever. If it was woke it would be every third sentence talking about how much harder her life is.
The second they brought Palpatine back is the second Luke’s sacrifices & Vaders sacrifice of saving his son and restoring balance to the force become redundant, the whole point of the OT and the prequels is completely scrubbed away.
Perhaps Luke used The Force to break the 4th wall and see what Disney was doing to the franchise and lore. That's the only thing that could explain why he gave up.
Modern Lucasfilm thinks that people trained in a skill from the age of 2 into adulthood can just forget how to use said skill over the course of a year, really just brilliant.
Right. It's like Michael Jordan while he was playing baseball; pretty sure he still would have kicked the asses of 99.5% of the population in a game of basketball. There's a difference between "I've forgotten how to do trick beer pong shots since I got out of college" and "I've forgotten how to do things as intrinsic to my everyday existence as putting pants on."
I was so tired of these people ruining characters, I decided to start my own comic company in my spare time. It's time for us to make our own heroes and universes. We're already working on issue #2 of one of our books. Exciting times!
Let's keep in mind that this entire arc is inconsistent with Obi-wan's *CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.* He was resolved to protect Luke no matter what at the end of *Episode 3.* (He had just defeated Vader BTW) By the time *Star Wars Rebels* plays out he gets serious when Darth Maul threatens to take *Luke* and kills *Maul* in a few moves. Somehow between both Episode 3 and Rebels he becomes a complete husk of a Jedi. They clearly want to portray all the OG characters as mentally broken. If *Mace Windu* somehow survived getting thrown out the window and electrocuted I would wager they would have him living out a halfway house addicted to spices and cut off from the force. If *Yoda* never died they would have had him living homeless on the streets of *Tatooine* begging for credits to eat day to day. OG Characters get treated so badly by Disney.
My brother said last night "what if Obi Wan dies and Reva now turned good and feeling bad about killing Obi Wan has some surgery to make her look like Obi-Wan and takes over his mission for him". I laughed then immediately got nervous cause I could see it happening 😅 😬
The show had so much potential, but something struck me about the show that pretty much ruins it once you realize it. The overall arc of the story is leading towards Obi-Wan getting his 'mojo' back - his confidence, his sense of purpose, his Jedi powers, etc. And to do what? Sit in a cave for another 20 years or so? It basically has no point.
I think the fact that he keeps using a blaster is insane. They've already established that he hates guns. Legit why isn't he using his wits and skills in the force more than blasting things
Because the last thing he wants to do is draw attention to himself. He went to Tatooine to hide and protect Luke, not draw attention to himself by using the force and using a lightsaber.
@@turtlebot323 I never said he didn't have to use it in life or death situations, just that his primary reasons for not using them were to hide himself and protect Luke.
They are also building a terrible gap between the Obi-Wan we see in Episode 3 and 4. At least according to Lucas, Obi-Wan was still supposed to be Vader's superior when they meet in a New Hope, now if they are to maintain continuity, this re-development of Obi-Wan will have to happen off screen. Obi-Wan was supposed to be training to commune with QGJ this entire time on Tatooine, instead we see him failing at. Instead of growing into a Yoda-style jedi master ready to train Luke when the time is right, he's a pathetic has been, this is awful.
I mean there's still three episodes left, so who's to say that Kenobi won't change drastically by the last episode. I mean they're clearly building up for a character arc here, and seeing as Filoni is credited (just a thanks, but he's usually an advisor on these things) I'd be surprised if the whole point of the series wasn't for Kenobi to end up as the focused and wise man we see in both ep.4 and his appearance in the 'Rebels' cartoon which is set about a year or two before ep.4. Maybe we should wait for the conclusion of the series before we consider it a failure? Yes, they could blow it and leave us with "Jake Kenobi", but its just as likely that they'll leave us with the Ben Kenobi we have in ep.4. Lets not be overly cynical just because there's a lot of trash being made these days.
But, but, we still have 3 episodes for him to become an master again! 😋 Seriously though I agree with everything you said. Ben Kenobi's episode of Rebels was so awesome because he WAS that person we knew he would become with years of one-to-one training with Qui Gon. The sort of person who had come to terms with the mistakes of the past and was focused on the future and the part he would play in that. A person so in tune with the force that he knew exactly how things would play put and was able to vanish and be totally absorbed in to the force effortlessly. He was the first person in the Galaxy to do that. Although...who wants to bet that the season ends with Qui Gon appearing in the last scene, and all that development takes place offscreen (again).
@Cancer Sauce @MrZkinandBonez Yeah, that would all make sense, except this is an interquel about a major, central character of two trilogies, not a totally fresh origin story on a minor, undeveloped character. If you can't develop a character without brute forcing an arc of "incompetent buffoon to wise hero", when said character has already chronologically been a victorious galactic general, and heroic jedi knight for multiple stories, then you're awful at writing characters, full stop. Not every story can or should be an origin story, and not every origin story can or should even be the exact same arc.
In some older material it was said that surviving Jedi had to be careful about using their powers for two main reasons. The first was that doing crazy things via the force where people could see it would start rumors that would spread. Secondly, using the force would create "ripples" in it. This could be sensed sometimes at great distances, as was seen in the original movies. Eventually this could attract the assassins or even Vader himself. So, Obi Wan was supposed to have been in hiding and essentially training at very low levels to avoid detection.
Yes, this. That's why Yoda went to Dagobah. He went to live near a nexus of dark force energy so it would basically hide him and cloak whatever he might do there.
If that's true (and if so it should've been explained far more clearly in the first episode), it still doesn't explain why he's so bumbling and unwise. You don't have to use the force to have vision. Obi-Wan should be written as wise and knowing, like a true Jedi. This character is not Obi-Wan Kenobi.
It would be cool if they didn't shit on everything else and kept only that as a reason to make Obi Wan weak. That could have been a challenge for Obi Wan to continue his Force training unnoticed. But even in the world in this series they created, it doesn't make much sense and isn't explained well.
I have been wondering why Obi-wan is unable to contact Qui-gon. Yoda assigned him this task in _Revenge of the Sith._ The events of this series are supposedly a decade thereafter, but he has still not managed to reach out to him. How?
Yeah I definitely saw that ANH scene as being the first time they fought since Mustafar. I was acting hoping during that interaction in Ep 3 that they at least wouldn’t fight, so as not to break continuity.
I really hate how they keep portraying the Sith as these maniacal sociopaths that always has to back stab each other for the sake of power. Always willing or threatening to kill someone at the drop of the hate. Ok already the Sith are evil, we get it. Even evil people need to have some semblance of rationality to meet their goals.
mh i mean that has always been a thing tho. But back in the good ol EU days it was at least also acknowledged and eventually realized in the stories itself that this was an inherent problem of their philosophy and there were many different attempts and ideas to coutneract it. But the characters were written so much better and there was so much more passion and care in the IP that it was actually interesting and engaging. And the Sith werent categorically "evil", they were very complex and nuanced. Good times it were^^
I've hated what they've done to the "bad guys" since Disney took over. I remember in the old Trilogy the Empire were a force bent on conquering sort of like the Roman Empire but the people in it were not blood thirsty vampires. People had all their fonctions, administrators, etc....And yea guys like Vader had goals to accomplish and get things done but they had their own set of morals. It wasn't bad for the sake of bad.
@@Pneumanon Well yeah OK "Always" is the wrong word but what i meant was that it has been a Thing awhile and isnt exclusive to Disney Star wars. i was also talking about the old books and Comics and many of those came even before the prequels.
@@datzfatz2368 Not really; at no point did ANY Sith ever consider turning on Palpatine in the OT or the Prequels. He was the master, they were each an apprentice--there's not much depth, but they seem to believe in him, believe in his view for a world of order (read; totalitarianism), but with personal, emotional motivations like fear and anger behind this faith. This is much more believable, and frankly scary, than basically old-school comic book villains, twirling their mustaches.
You know what bothers me the most from what I've seen is that Kenobi is known to have lost strength over time, that's in the original films, that's not Disney make-believe head cannon. But in Episode 3 he was at the top of his game, having learned probably to the point where most of his fighting moves are muscle memory. Making Obi-Wan weaker would've meant showing him rusty and unable to rely on his strength on occasions. His muscle memory would get triggered, but he would find himself struggling with execution because he's getting older and he barely gets any training. But along the series, he would learn to play on his strengths and "re-learn" the same way that Vader did, accounting for his new weaknesses. That way you would've connected the dots between Episode 3's Obi-Wan and Episode 4's. What infuriates me is that I'm a wannabe writer who gets a page done every two months and I could figure out a better way to depict Obi-Wan's fighting style in this series. It's like they're not even trying. I mean in Episode 3 you have him try to maneuver in the bind (like Shadiversity explains) at such a speed that we barely notice it. That's really advanced stuff. You don't go from that to barely able to hold a lightsaber in ten years.
It's sort of ambiguous in New Hope; Vader calls him weak and old, but Obi-Wan just shrugs and holds his own, and then finally chooses to allow Vader to strike him down, presumably so he could guide Luke in a way he couldn't do alive. I'm not saying Obi-Wan would have won that fight with Vader, but he wasn't getting his ass handed to him either, and nothing else in the movie suggests he's really weak--he quite likely was still a tough fucker, just not quite enough to handle Vader, who has spent years literally hunting down Jedi.
Aside from the malicious deconstructing of our beloved film heroes, I am just astounded at the sheer lack of talent from these so called professional writers. Here I am, just some shmuck who works in retail working his butt off to make his own sci-fi series, raking over everything he wrote multiple times over so that it is good enough for him, much less for people he'll pitch it to, and over at Disney, they just shit out awful scripts and call it a day. This really pisses me off how lazy they are.
@@tommymarco Hey thanks. That means a lot. I don't know how well it will turn out, but rest assured, it will likely turn out better than most of the crap Hollywood is churning out these days.
@@MaesterMike Always a pleasure . i feel it will turn out well . we are missing original ideas these days . yours will most definitely be infinitely better than anything hollywood pushes out these days . their movies are really easily forgettable . i even find most films on youtube better than hollywood , as you know it is made for the love of making films : )
So with this version of Kenobi, how does Obi Wan kill Maul so easily in the timeline when Rebels happens? Because right now this version of Kenobi would have a hard time beating an old and worn out Maul. Or did Disney decide to off Rebels into "Legends" because they didn't create? One of the worst aspects of Walt Disney is really showing up here. Take something that is someone else work and total change it to what they want.
@@kal0247 True, I remember getting pissed when that happened. Like oh cool he is in here let's see what happens and NOPE he is dead. There are some theories going around that grand inquisitor survives and it changes him or something like that. We will see what happens in the next episodes.
@@kal0247 Presumably he survived and is just in a bacta tank somewhere so the writers could get him out of the way. Rebels takes place after this so he must have recovered.
How did everybody know that Leia was a Skywalker? Sort of defeats the idea of her being in hiding and raised by a family on a discrete planet. How does Reva automatically know who Leia is? How could Reva be that smart to figure it out yet so dumb that she cannot catch them when they are easy to capture.
She justs knows that Obi and Bale Organa are good friends and by kidnapping Organa's daughter, there's some good chances of Obi showing up to rescue the girl
@@fernandomaron87 Because when you kidnap the child of royalty, who commands an entire planet, the first person who is gonna show up will be a wanted criminal who has been in hiding for years.
They are giving Kenobi the Jake Skywalker treatment, though people are trying to justify it by saying he has PTSD. What the problem with this is that how is Kenobi supposed to protect Luke, if he can’t even defend himself?
Yoda also had a PTSD and didn’t use the force for like 20 years and he managed to lift an X-wing easily. The writers had no excuse to make Obiwan this way. This is just lazy.
Those people are sheltered narcissists, because that's not what PTSD is. PtSD puts you back in the moment, makes you relive the trauma whenever exposed to stimuli that reminds you of it. Obi-Wan should be whipping his lightsaber out every five seconds, at the smallest thing, if it was PTSD, but no, it's just modern trash millennial writing, where everyone has to be sad and emotional, because the writer is an emotionally stunted child.
When Ben and Leia are on the transport and the storm trooper asks Ben a question, Ben says that it's a long story, and the Trooper says that this is a long ride. However, the Troopers get off the transport less than a minute later. What the hell?
I can see why Tom Cruise came out and admitted that he didn’t want to do a Top Gun sequel. Hollywood is destroying all of these masculine classic characters.
Top Gun: Maverick is a great example of what happens when people who have actual talent and love their work bring back beloved characters. The whole thing with Disney Star Wars is a great example of what happens when no-talent hacks and people who love their "agendas" bring back once-beloved characters.
How is obi wan destroyed in this show? He seems to be reacting more or less how he should given everything that's happned. Or did you want snippy one liners and jumping from cars? Cause this isnt the buddy cop movie Obi we got from the prequels. This is the obi who failed his best friend, watched his whole life and reason for living be destroyed and defamed. Did yall just want a campy romp thru the outer rim?
@@GoodStageProduction0 I agree with you 100%. “Joker” & the the newest Spider-Man movie got banned in China and look at how much both of those films made. A lot of these big budget films are being made to target the Chinese market. The American people want good story, character development, etc. Look at the original Independence Day movie. Awesome story and characters. Now look at the crappy sequel, pure garbage! Funny thing is that movies make a lot of their profit from the concessions as well. Now there’s a shortage of movie popcorn in theaters lol! Hollywood can thank Joe for that.
The kids are 10. Kenobi just sulked for 10 years AND is STILL in a depressive stupor!?!?!? On Dagobah Kenobi didn't even seem aware of Leia. Lots of plot holes here thus creating more plot holes in the OG STAR WARS. Garbage! Hot garbage!
They HAD to put Leia in, even with a shoehorn...that's why from the start they established that she knew she isn't Organa...why? why does she know that? why did they tell her?...it's just convenient...if she was 100% Organa she wouldn't have been in this series.
@@jorghaltehreffkyan4190 Ironically the light side is basically Yin and the dark side is Yang. Long story, the force is primarily based on Chinese Daoism. Which focuses on masculine and feminine energies.
How also was he supposed to train Luke? He actually says to Owen “he must be trained...” - by who, if he’s lost all his abilities how is he possibly supposed to train Luke?
My take is that Obi-Wan is just going through the motions. He is watching over Luke because he was tasked to by Yoda. Now that he knows that Anakin is alive maybe that will jolt him out of the funk has been in for the last ten years.
Forgive me for mentioning The Last Jedi, but you don't need a strong connection to the Force to train someone in the ways of the Force, because that's exactly what Luke did with Rey, and he had completely shut himself off from the Force entirely for a time.
Jedi didn't use the force following Order 66 when they went into hiding because it made them visible to dark side force users. Yoda was on a planet heavy in the dark side to mask his force powers.
It's crazy that ten years ago a "Obi Wan vs Vader" prequel would have been one of the biggest movies of all time. Now it's episode 3 of a mediocre TV show.
RE: these new shows-it's like we are watching children wear their dad's clothing, and we all know they are playing. They kinda look like the dad, but we all know they won't pass, and it's just a disgrace if they take it too much further. SELL STAR WARS BACK TO GEORGE
I mean, you say Kenobi would never be that stupid - in episode 4 he whips out his lightsaber in a crowded bar to settle a bar fight as if the Empire aren't crawling the town at that very moment.
I mean, at that point, the Jedi are classed as extinct, even Tarkin says so. It might appear an odd sight to the average patron, but it's not like the Empire is still actively searching for them. Agreed it's an odd choice, but it's the original film and in context it's fine at the time it was made. Rules and events then established in the prequels/shows etc, can't be used to criticise an earlier production.
@@wheeliebin18 The Empire hunting down and destroying the Jedi Knights wasn't established in later films though, it was established by Obi-Wan ten minutes earlier in the same movie.
Another stupid thing: We can’t see any character growth with Kenobi or Skywalker because we’re picking up midstream in their lives. We know who they were and who they’ll become, so the emotional heart of the show has to be another character, someone we can see grow. I wouldn’t have chosen Leia as the primary, but okay. Instead of giving us a place to go, though, they drop her in roughly fully formed, already possessing the strong-willed qualities that make her a leader later on. She should have started out as a pampered teenage princess, but the kidnapping is what transforms her, along with the help of Kenobi. He helps bring out the Padme, and perhaps even scolds her for being a little too Anakin. But no. I guess they decided that would send a wrong message to girls, so instead we get a fully-formed character (who would be a SENATOR were it not for her whimsy) played by a too-young actress who thinks she’s in a cheesy 90s sitcom. Soldiers? Dead people? Sith Inquisitors? FLEA? Nope, not scared. If I may, my liege: FUCK OFF, SHOW.
God, no. Her starting out as a pampered spoiled princess would have been awful. There’s no reason to think she’d be that way. And this DOES show her growth. She’s the same person we have seen-there never was a sign she was spoiled or unduly pampered-but we see her start to realize the value in service and working for others.
Exactly! He’s just tagging along with some snotty little kid(who btw got the job cause daddy is a Hollyweird exec) for 3 episodes so far, which completely wasted time on his character arc. Now it appears that the 3 remaining shows will give mini me Leia and Reeeeva the most screen time. Just watch!!! But since this isn’t a Obi Wan show(despite his name on the title) KK and her minions ultimately pulled off the greatest bait n switch tv series Disney ever produced, and they’re laughing at us right now. SW is dead folks.
@@xyshomavazax I can agree on that. Honestly, I would like to see part of what you commented; Obiwan scolding her for being a little too like Anakin. Temperament-wise, she took after Anakin while Luke took after Padme. If there’s not a scene where she loses her temper or does something reckless and dangerous and Obiwan reacts because he sees the Skywalker in her-maybe even raises his voice or gets angry-that would be missed opportunity.
Leia never met Obi-Wan in 'Star Wars : A New Hope', that fact alone invalidates this whole story. Sorry Never met him PRIOR TO 'Star Wars' A New Hope'.

I have never written anything in my life, this series has given me the confidence that even I can do a lot better than this, a few plotlines spring to mind...
Insane that the same guy who fought general grievous without hesitation and held his own against Anakin in his prime is now terrified to fight slow ass Darth Vader
As an avid star wars fan, I'm genuinely disinterested to see Kenobi tv series. I'm like, stop milking luke skywalker timeline and come up with something more unique and creative.
Yes, like why don't they make Old Republic era, that is a gold mine Actually, considering what they've been making... Leave at least that part of Star Wars intact please
In the current climate? Shudder to think what crap they would come up with. Lesbian Gamorians try to create a fat acceptance movement to spread throughout the galaxy?
Its some of the incontinuity of the action sequences that is killing it for me. From the inquisitor parkoring her way along the roof tops which seems to take hours while Kenobi is pinned down. He takes out one of the gunners, saves Leia and then manages to get to the bottom of the building within seconds. Other gunman magically gone and Pakoor Sith still not getting to him. Or in the last episode where Leia is running down the tunnel for ages only for Parkour inquisitor to suddenly appear at the end of said tunnel without any indication as to how she knew where the exit was... Theres loads more but those stand out the most for me.
How is this version of Kenobi supposed to turn into the version we see in Rebels?! He left episode 3 with the knowledge that his master has maintained his consciousness in the Force after he died and with the drive of more training as his goal... and we're supposed to believe he immediately gave up, buried his saber, and said "screw it?" Now we have this massive dip of Out of Character nonsense and he is somehow going to turn into the man we see in Rebels and A New Hope? These people are not writers, they are drones serving Kennedy.
I get why but it's honestly kind of insane to me how hard disney has gone on destroying the OG characters in order to elevate their weaker new characters. It's not a coincidence the old characters are male and usually white while the new characters are female and not always but frequently non-white. IMO the tear down of old characters to make the new characters look better is easily the worst writing choice one can make. It completely flies in the face of the monomyth blueprint too. All of it comes from this deep seated resentment and disrespect women have now for men in general.
I'm a minority female...the problem with leftist ideology is that they feel they need to bring someone down in order to build someone else up...which is false. Strong characters will come out organically without having to devalue white males when the writing is done well.
This is what they did to thor, in Ragnarok. They made, thor’s situation and problems a joke. Thus making him a fool, making him weaker. Yet, she gets to lead thors people…… because she’s a woman . Coming from a woman myself, this is disgusting.
