No holiday in the West Country would be complete without a visit to the South Devon Railway, where a little bit of Devon’s history has been captured and beautifully presented for us all to enjoy. It’s lovely to read books and see pictures of quaint little tank engines steaming through glorious countryside with a short rake of chocolate and cream carriages, the South Devon Railway takes those nostalgic images and brings them to life with pretty stations, gleaming locomotives, traditional signals, buildings and water towers all bearing that distinct Great Western Railway appearance.
The friendly team at the railway go the extra mile to make sure your visit is a memorable one for all the right reasons, with a café, miniature railway, museum and engine shed at Buckfastleigh, along the way our train stops briefly at Staverton, a perfect recreation of a GWR wayside station, finally we steam into Totnes Riverside station for the Totnes rare breeds farm, the town and mainline station.
Take time out from your busy day to enjoy the Devon countryside and River Dart from a point of view passengers rarely see.
The railway is a standard gauge line, (1,435 mm - 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) located in the South, West of England, easily accessible from the A38 Devon Expressway or by main-line GWR trains from London and the West Country, regular CrossCountry trains from the North and Midlands also serve Totnes.
To learn more or maybe plan your own visit, please click on this link - www.southdevon...
Thank you to the staff and volunteers of the South Devon Railway for their kind assistance in making this video.

It is always sad when a railway closes, a piece of history gone forever. Your father had an interesting career driving steam, diesel and electric trains. I hope the candidate who wants to reopen the railway is successful. Here in England, people wait in queues of cars next to closed railways that used to speed people into town centers in minutes, journeys that now take much longer on busy roads. The short sighted fools who closed the railways are the ones to blame for the chaos on the roads.

Travel within the UK is not restricted, so I've been visiting British heritage railways who have been very cooperative in allowing me to place cameras on their locomotives, I have a number of these videos to upload over the next month or so, it's a win win situation, I get to shoot interesting videos and the railways get to show potential customers what they have to offer. The South Devon Railway is one of the friendliest I visit, a warm welcome is always guaranteed. The school holidays will soon be over and most heritage railways will close for a while, although the Santa Express season will soon be with us, it will be Spring before the railways fully open up again, with a series of Galas and special events. I am lucky to live in a country with such a vibrant railway preservation industry, the one good thing that came out of the Beeching cuts.

@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 2 года назад
It was the Dart Valley Railway when I first visited a long time ago so I looked it up on the internet, I have copied and pasted the answer I believe to be correct - Just to clear things up, the Dart Valley Railway was what is now called the South Devon Railway. The Dart Valley Light Railway PLC used to run both this line and the Paignton and Dartmouth Railway. In 1992, the South Devon Railway Trust took over what was called the Dart Valley Railway and it was renamed as a consequence. The Dart Valley Railway PLC (as it is now known) still operates the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.

@@xenon53827 It was called the Dart Valley Railway when I first travelled on it just after it reopened. At one time the Dart Valley Railway and the Dartmouth Steam Railway were owned by the same company - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dartmouth_Steam_Railway I believe the name was changed from Dart Valley Railway to South Devon Railway to avoid confusion with the nearby Dartmouth Steam Railway. From the photos I've seen and the articles I've read I would guess the name change took place around 2010.

Does the train carry a step ladder for anyone who gets on / off at Nappers?! It seems to be closed when I visited - padlocked, etc. They ought to make it like Kelling Heath Park Station on the NNR.

Hi, I believe the train does carry a step ladder, but it is most likely for emergencies where passengers might be required to leave the train where there is no platform. Napper's Halt looked to be out of use when we passed through. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelling_Heath_Park_railway_station Kelling Heath station does have the benefit of a raised platform, I'm guessing you are suggesting the same solution for Napper's Halt.

Yes indeed, though it may have to be moved away from the signal perhaps so it's not in station limits. Thank you for reply as always! C

@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 2 года назад
Hi, is that the rails at 13:24 ? They are either old rails waiting to be taken away or new rails waiting to be fitted by the permanent way team in place worn rails.

Hi, it would take a brave driver to sit on the handrail of the smoke-box door, but I have to play along with the RU-vid algorithm, it likes "Driver's Eye View" or "Cab-ride" whereas it would ignore "Forward View". I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride 🙂

Bradley, you can see the camera on the handrail in Tim’s lineside shots during the runround at Totnes. Just as you can see Tim taking these shots - having an Alfred Hitchcock moment?

I was really enjoying this video when an ugly add came and spoilt it !

Hi, I try to reduce the ads, but if I go too far RU-vid stops recommending my videos. If you watch RU-vid a lot, it’s worth paying to watch Ad free. I do sympathise with you, Ads are a pain, but the revenue I receive does help pay for my travelling, without which I would not be able shoot many of my videos.
