Ahhhhh, the long anticipated Route 72 driver's POV. Many thanks to the driver and yourself for posting this. To no surprise, abysmal traffic.

I recall that somebody was keen to see this one and asked me a couple of times. I guess this was you and that you are now happy 😊😄 and that you watch others of my videos which may not be from Melbourne 👍

It was a busy route in the 70s when i was at Camberwell and it looks even worse now. Gardiner station has certainly changed, it was always a challenge going over the railway crossing especially in the morning peak. Happy days!

Thanks a lot for this great Video👍 A tram route that i used al lot of time when i lived in Camberwell und later in Malvern. From 1970 until 1979 this tram route was changed from Malvern to Camberwell Depot and then came later back to Malvern. Before 1970 the route had number 7 and then changed to 72. Tram route number 7 was then a short trip from thie city along High Street til Malvern Town Hall the same route as the Glen Iris tram number 6

@@tressteleg1 I also remember the old milk bar on the corner of Burke and Riversdale Road Camberwell Junction. They had great milk shakes for 20 cents - the good old days of the aussie dollar😉

I don’t think there are any milk bars as such anymore but some shops which sell take away or table food do sell milk shakes today.

Good video! I still think the Burke/Riversdale curves should've never been removed, I believe it was a very short-sighted decision, as was the removal of (one of) the curves at Clarendon/Park.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
The curves were removed during Kennett’s privatisation madness with two operators covering entirely different areas pretended the other did not exist, and those curves were the connection between the two companies.

Only one set of tram tracks? Where is the tram going the other way?
@Bobrogers99
@Bobrogers99 3 года назад
If Melbourne were to embark on a program to promote/require more side street and off street parking along these routes, they could better separate the tram and car traffic in all but the most densely commercial areas. That would speed things up for everyone.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
Some streets are Clearways in peak hours with no parking but tin pot municipal councils often won’t do this as it may affect the trade of shops there. Offpeak like this, parking anywhere.

There is never money to throw around, and for better or worse, function comes ahead of aesthetics with track laying, especially in locations such as this.

There is no single track in Melbourne except for the terminuses themselves.

I must commend you, not only on this video but also for your traffic awareness skills. I noticed you slow and allow a overtaking vehicle jump in front when a lesser driver would have pushed on ,ending in catastrophe. Your extreme patience is frequently displayed even when given an opportunity to "punt" a very impatient van. I was surprised that at one point you showed actual and expected time and you were only 7 minutes late which I was expecting to be higher. You need to be a driver trainer if you are not already.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
As much as I would like to take credit, I was not the driver however I approved of the way he was driving. Courtesy to motorists sometimes means that they will do the favour for you, like when a right turning car has blocked the tram. Somebody coming the other way may slow down to let the car turn. And I make these comments as a former trams driver myself. I did apply to be a trainer but due to a mistake with numbers, I was sent back to the depot. I never bothered applying again. When a line is consistently delayed by heavy road traffic, running times may be extended, but then on a quiet day the driver must ‘drag the road’ to avoid running early. When I was driving around 1990, we just went with the traffic flow.
@aussiejohn5835
@aussiejohn5835 3 года назад
@@tressteleg1 I know by your response that you were this driver back in the 90's. Anyone can drive a tram or bus but not everyone can be a tram or bus driver. I am sure you will know what I am saying but many will not. The days of KPI's and computer tracking have not been kind to us today.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
I tried to drive smoothly but did not muck about when it came to speed. I suppose luck must come into it sometimes, but I never had a passenger fall on my tram. Unfortunately I would not give a Pass to too many present day tram drivers in Melbourne.

Tram drivers just learn to shrug off such driving. Later in the video another in a van just shot out from his parking spot in front of the tram. Sometimes you hit them, sometimes they get away.

Tram drivers have to get used to that sort of thing happening every day. Sometimes you crash into them, sometimes you miss them. I hit a number of them while tram driving.

@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
Well as it happens, cab drivers were considered the most likely to swerve in front of trams, potentially causing accidents. Despite hitting plenty of cars in my driving career, I never got a taxi! Certainly one often wonders where some people do get their driving licences from.

@clayton4115
@clayton4115 3 года назад
why is he driving so slowly?
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
Probably because of all the darn traffic ahead, but earlier in the video with nobody getting on or off, if the driver runs early the computer will know and he/she will be in trouble with Yarra.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
In the contract with PTV, Yarra is paid bonuses depending on whether a trip is punctual or not. There are about seven time points along the average route, and if a tram is more than five minutes late or one minute early, a penalty payment will be incurred. Any driver that makes a habit of frequently being early or late is sure to be asked to ‘please explain’ by Yarra.
@tressteleg1
@tressteleg1 3 года назад
Now you know why your tram stops for a minute or two for no sensible reason. It has had some good luck and actually got early. And the driver wants to stay out of trouble. 😊😄😆

I recorded it on one wet Saturday afternoon in March. The roads were absolutely choked with traffic for much of the journey. Only a helicopter could have made the trip on time. But late at night or early morning at the weekends, drivers would probably have to keep an eye on their AVM display box.
