Driving a Cammed Silverado WITH the Stock Torque Converter

Just simple little video to show the shifts of the transmission and if it even worth driving a cammed vehicle with the stock stall. You won't get the full potential of the Engine without a stall but it is possible to drive around in the mean time.
Equipment I used to film this video:

UPDATE: I recently got the truck completely re-tuned by a different tuner and it drives nothing like in this video. The shift points are a lot higher (about 2,500 or 3,000 rpm) on just regular driving to help with the engine bogging down. Surprisingly that didn't take away from gas mileage since the engine doesn't have to work as hard anymore. The new re-tuned video will pop up on the top right of the video at 3:00. Click the video if you want to see the new updated version. SECOND UPDATE: I got new torque converter for the truck and it’s badass. Go check out those videos about it!

most people install performance cams for performance, and those people wouldn't try to slip/stall their lock up converters. maybe you should just pull one of your spark plug wires if you just want the sound at a stop light. there's a reason a big cam sounds like it does at idle
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 7 лет назад
+Mini Dragger slip their lock up converters? I was talking about how it is driving with a stock stall speed, not everyone has money to buy all the supporting mods all at once.
@EricFixalot
@EricFixalot 5 лет назад
Mini Dragger, Pulling a spark plug wire is a good way to ruin your catalytic converters and throw misfire codes like crazy. All that unburned fuel would also fuck up whatever cylinder you did it to. At a minimum you’d be washing the oil off the cylinder wall and diluting the oil with fuel. But theres also the potential of hydro-locking the cylinder. Stfu before you cost someone a lot of money. High stall lockup converters are also nothing special and are definitely a good option for those who want to jump past the weak point in their power band which generally gets worse with performance mods. Wanna race fuckboi? I’ll beat your 7 cylinder stock stall ass bitch.

My cam is smaller than yours and the truck is way more snappy with my current stall converter(3,400). There’s a few factors at play like traction and your power band and future mods. But In general if you save up you won’t regret it. I don’t think there’s ways to tune drivability with the stock stall other than raising the part throttle shift points and smoothing the idle.

RU-vid haters are annoying, just keep your comments to yourself and move onto another video. John cool video to show people the reality of cam and stock stall, some people can't afford both at once. I run the 210/218 vinci cam (similar to comp 212/218) b/c it retains the low end of stock cam so it works just fine with stock stall. Truck does 0-60 in 6 sec with 3.42 and 275/55/R20. A 3200 stall and 4.10s would probably get it close to 5 sec 0-60, but its my dd and I like the calm low rpm cruising around town and highway. A stall would drive me insane for my dd. Damn thing can't get to 30mph with out screaming over 2500 rpm. Besides my 3.42s would smoke my same set up with 4.10s on a highway roll as I can hold 2nd gear all they way to 95 staying in the power band longer.

@JohnVesely

That might be it, also if you have headers and a ypipe the heat from the pipe under the tranny could be heating up the oil in the tranny.

Just out of curiosity why would you put a higher profile cam in a stock motor? Especially a big heavy truck. It probably doesn’t make any more noticeable power does it? I’m sure it changes the power curve. Has it been to the dyno ? If so what kind of numbers did you get?
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 6 лет назад
It definitely makes more power. With the motor being “stock” doesn’t mean a bigger camshaft won’t make power. The heads on the truck already flow pretty good so a bigger cam and a pair of headers really wake up the engine. Even though the truck is heavy it still moves. It’s definitely not “fast” but it’s a lot faster than stock.
@ShinyKnife
@ShinyKnife 6 лет назад
I have the same motor in my truck. I was just curious. I have read if you port and polish the heads and upgrade the valves and rods. Change the intake and throttle body. Bigger mass air and bigger injectors. Add a 229/242 degree cam. Headers and a good flowing exhaust you can get about 100 hp out of it. That’s why I ask if you had any dyno numbers. I’d like to see what it makes on your set up. Do you have a guesstimate? lol
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 6 лет назад
I haven’t dynoed the truck with what it has now. But I would estimate that it is at least 385hp at the crank, I would hope to hit the 400 mark but I don’t think it’s there.
@ShinyKnife
@ShinyKnife 6 лет назад
That sounds reasonable. That’s a lot of power. It’s just in a heavy truck. I’ve been looking for a 5.3 to put in my foxbody Mustang. Lot of guys around here are swapping that motor in and running a shit load of nitrous.
