I drove one of these back to back with my paid off 2013 BRZ. It's really nice. The interior is much more modern. I think my car looks much, much better. The new one looks bloated and jelly beaned. I don't think it's a bad looking car, but I don't think I'd feel the same glow spotting it in a parking lot as I do my WRB BRZ. The power is noticeable... but my 15 6mt accord 2.4 had significantly more low end grunt. The difference feels more subtle than the dyno charts suggest, but the car dealer sitting shotgun kept making scared noises and traffic was bad so I never really got to rev it out. Ultimately I got back in my car and I think I like it better... it just feels slightly more raw and special. It's a keeper. I'll never sell it. The new car is awesome, but I think it's missing a bit something. I think I'll get a positive displacement supercharger. It won't have a warranty but I'll have at least $15k left over rather than buying a new one. The twins are awesome. Try one!

Last suggestion but very important... Dealers tend to stock automatics because more people will buy them. Not everyone wants one, but even I have caved before, only to regret it, buying an automatic because it was in stock when I wanted a manual. Toyota and all manufacturers should give the dealers a manual transmission on consignment. That way the dealer doesn't pay for it until it sells. But you can't sell manuals if they are not in stock and all dealers should have at least one manual in stock at all times.

Why do people complain about it not having a turbo? Claiming to know more than a company that's one of the biggest manufacturer in the world? Toyota knows you're still going to buy it anyway. I used to think it needed a turbo, but over the years and as my taste has evolved, I think it doesn't need it. Sure, it would be fun and thrilling to add a turbo. Tune it, chase after more expensive sports cars and feel good about it. It also makes you look insecure and compensating. You can't exploit it half of the time on the road, unless you track it every week. If you were Toyota, would you allow it to go against the Supra? Not to mention turbos add complexity and more importantly cost.
@Brian-uq6jm
@Brian-uq6jm 2 года назад
Adding a turbo would defeat the purpose of this car, which belongs to the skidpad and track. To make a race car out of this, the major things to do is reduce its weight and tune the suspension, wheels and tyres, not adding weight to the front end from a turbo, that'd just be retarded. If people want a turbo'ed car, they are looking at the wrong car. They should go get the Mustang, the new Z, or whatever fills their ego. The 86 is a serious car and it can't be compromised, and i hope it stays this way.
@Brian-uq6jm
@Brian-uq6jm 2 года назад
And just some food for thought: Some Chinese RU-vidr made a comparison video between two cars, 86 and BRZ, one supercharged to have 100 extra hp on the wheels, and another staying on stock power and getting the weight reduced to 1200kg with a fully retuned the suspension. Both have upgraded wheels and tyres. The lighter car wins on a track. It's sort of expected though, when it comes to adding power or reducing weight, reducing weight always takes priority when making it faster on a track cuz adding power doesn't only add weight, it also requires changing and strengthening of other parts which can add more weight, which changes handling and corner speed for the worse.
@JoshuaTootell
@JoshuaTootell 2 года назад
Most people never get enough track time to even fully exploit a car at the track. At one point I was hitting the track at least once a month on my motorcycle for a couple years in a row and I was still seeing decent improvements every time. If you are that pure of a track driver, you already know what you want in a car and either did, or did now, buy this car for a reason.
@Brian-uq6jm
@Brian-uq6jm 2 года назад
@@JoshuaTootell True. I'm just just so glad Toyota and Subaru don't give in and add a turbo to this car whatever their reasoning was. Those who want a turbo can easily do it themselves. These cars are already a rare breed and are almost going extinct. Now everything is going turbo and big numbers to sell cars. I have the upmost respect for Toyota/Subaru/Mazda for keeping these cars alive the way they are. I just hope they keep this up for as long as they can.

I thought of it when you announced at the beginning that the increase in torque is what made the difference. And if I had to pick I would prefer a car with more torque than horsepower on public roads. I would then rather Toyota had developed the inverse of those numbers: 184 HP, and 228 ft-lbs! My newer 01 Z3 developes puts out about 225 HP at 5,900 rpm and 214 ft-lbs at 3,500 rpm. I know they're only two seaters, but they're convertibles!

@geneb1719 3 года назад
@@momsbasement656 Good thought about fuel. I wasn't really thinking about it. But, I have spent way more on tires than any of the RWD cars I have ever owned. I drive tight canyon roads daily. The unsophisticated suspension of my 2005 WRX causes the outside edge to wear down fast. Local alignment shop won't do anything but factory alignment. If one tire goes out, you buy four new ones. I buy a set at least once every year. I have spent quite a bit keeping up with my car. It is old. A newer car should be more reliable and need less repairs. Mechanically the 86 is much more simple. No turbo. 2 less differentials. 2 less CV axles. I have been looking at 2015 86s with big brakes. The prices are high. I do think it would be much cheaper to own.
@momsbasement656
@momsbasement656 3 года назад
@@geneb1719 Yeah, I could see the WRX being more expensive besides just fuel. It's based on a rally car and I remember rally racing being very expensive when I used to participate. I assume the Miata doesn't have what you need? It has a more sophisticated suspension than the GR86, double wishbone front vs McPherson struts. I personally find the Miata stock swaybars much too whimpy and replace them.

@@momsbasement656 Good suggestion. I LOVE a miata. I've had two (94,99). But even putting the seat on the floor, Im too tall. 6'4" long torso. It was dangerous to drive. It needs a hardtop, rollbar, dropped seat , smaller extended wheel, and the suspension is so soft these cars usually lean towards the driver's side because of the driver's weight. Also, the engine is from the 80s for na and nb. Initial purchase is cheap, but it needs a lot. No experience with the nd. It's out of my budget. No perfect car. Lol. But, I dream.

Can you provide some specifics? I have same year - '17 Limited with Performance Pack. I'm fine with the suspension, but am thinking about the header/tune route. Been looking at Perrin. Once I heard the new one was going to have a new drivetrain, I put that idea on hold. Was planning to upgrade tires when the OEM tires that everyone bitches about wear out too. Thanks. I always go back and look at Todd's FRS video in which they did a header and tune and got rid of the torque dip. Ours have the advantage of shorter gearing than the '13 that Todd owned, so that helps a bit too (and that massive 5 HP/5 ft-lb torque.) If you stuck with the '17" wheels, we may have some savings on unsprung weight too. I am still under 25K miles too, and sprung for winter wheels and tires, so I'm not super anxious to get rid of it yet. At a minimum, I'd probably wait for the '23 or later to see how the new 2.4 version holds up.

It's absolutely a revolutionary engine change. The original was objectively too slow in any situation other than at high RPM on a track. I wanted to like one, I drove one on the track and the street and bought a used 350Z instead and that was by far the better choice.
