Driving The Polestar 3 Genuinely Surprised Me (Polestar 3 2025 Review)

Detailed review and test of the MY25 Polestar 3 large SUV, including price, interior, efficiency, ride comfort and handling.
After a long day of driving, Tom shares his thoughts on the 2025 Polestar 3 in Long Range Dual Motor guise, having driven both the standard trim and the Performance trim.
The Polestar 3 is almost perfect: great handling, high-end interior, amazing seats, crisp stereo and, arguably, handsome looks outside.
Two big problems: the price gets really high with choice options (our ideal spec is about $180,000 driveaway in Australia), and the efficiency is just bad - 25kWh/100km on our mixed drive yields range of just over 400km.
But a rear-wheel drive model is coming which could net 500km real-world.
Rivals to the Polestar 3 include the BMW iX, Mercedes EQE SUV, Audi Q8 E-tron - plus combustion and hybrid models like the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport.

So, the question I posed you in the video: is Polestar right to go after Porsche, abandoning its Tesla rival status? The Polestar 3 is very good…but is it $140K-180K good?
@twinrotors

People who spend that much do not want a “polestar” branding car. They want Lexus, Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes. Purchasing a fledgling brand which is actually Chinese is going to struggle for sales 😊

I think it’s interesting you cite Lexus as an example as a successfully embedded brand (I’d agree), but worth noting it didn’t exist 40 years ago, and is certainly much younger than the rest of your list.

Polestar’s biggest problem is their pricing - their products all seem genuinely really good, but they’re simply too expensive, especially considering the option packs. If the option packs were standard, the high price wouldn’t be as bad, but they really should drop the list price by $15-20k and make some of the optional kit standard.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 22 дня назад
Yes, there’s an interesting question to be posed about how much this car should be. I personally think it’d be a decent buy at, perhaps, $119,990 driveaway. $180k for my spec is just very very strong money for a Volvo XC90-grade vehicle, because that’s what this is (albeit more fun, and sportier).

People need to stop comparing the Polestar 3 or 4 to a Tesla model Y. Current Tesla’s could be classified as premium vehicles but they certainly are not considered a luxury vehicle. If you don’t have something like Nappa Leather which is a higher grade leather you are far from luxury. A little surprised Tom about your comment that you have not achieved good efficiency in the Polestar 2, however your longer termer was the previous which was 20% less efficient. My MY24 Long range single motor after 14,000 Ks is sitting at 14.4kw/H. From Shell Cove to Wollongnong usually high 12,s, and a trip from Shell Cove to Sydney normal average is high 13,s to low 14’s.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 22 дня назад
Jeff, you’re right. My long-termer was the very inefficient pre-facelift Performance. The facelift RWD Polestar 2 models are actually very, very efficient. Massive turnaround for that variant. Hoping to see something similar when Polestar rolls out the RWD PS3. If it could achieve even 20kWh/100km or better you’d be laughing in terms of real-world range.

Great work Tom. Also looking forward to your Polestar 4 review once the embargo for that is over. I have sat in the 3 and 4 but thinking the 4 will be sportier, and it obviously accelerates harder.
@mho0
@mho0 9 дней назад
@@chasingcars It is good to also remember that efficiency is just one parameter. Older Polestar 2's are better to drive as both axels are powered all the time. So while you get better efficiency you loose some in driving dynamics. And for me I could not really care less if my car consumes 15kwh or 20 kwh per 100km. Does not really make any difference is my use. While it probably is good for Polestar to do efficient models I really hope they also stick to real performance variants also where efficiency is secondary target and driving dynamics are the main goal. There are enough VWs, Toyotas ja Teslas in the world for those 'efficiency' people.

Went to the Polestar Space in Brisbane on the weekend. I was genuinely impressed by both the 3 and the 4 appearance (no test drive available). I'm coming from a b9 A4 Allroad. I actually prefer the 4 and for some reason the example on show felt more spacious than the 3. I think the colours of the seats might have played a role. I also preferred the look inside. I'm very keen to the see the review on the Polestar 4 as its definitely on the short list. Surely these both need a price drop with what's going on in the EV market currently. You can almost get 2 model y base models for a highly optioned single motor Polestar 4!

Price is the elephant in the room. Polestar make excellent cars and have one of the most transparent supply chains that tries to use more sustainable materials. But a premium car for the ethically conscious rich person who knows enough about cars to not just be recognisable-brand driven is a particularly niche market. Even as a P2 owner the price of the 3 is eye watering.

Polestar screwed up by emulating Tesla in its cockpit rather than emulating Porsche … as somebody who has bought four Volvos and three Porsches, I would never buy this over a Taycan Cross Turismo or a Macan 4, or even a Cayenne e-hybrid … because of the cockpit designs. We do attend vehicle launches to bring our audience reviews early, and to speak one-on-one with key engineers etc who would otherwise be totally off-limits. Probably the most important expense while on a launch isn’t covered by Polestar: my salary. That is paid by Budget Direct, and they’re our only master here at Chasing Cars and the guarantor of our independence. Hence why this review makes the negatives crystal clear (high price, poor efficiency, some NVH shortcomings) - carmakers simply can't control anything we say.

I guess that people fortunate enough being able to choose between Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Tesla (model X) will consider a lot what car they would like to identify themselves with. Being in transition times regarding going from fossil fuel to electric, people will also be open to reevaluate what brand they want to associate with. I think that Polestar is in a sweet spot for the moment. The allure of going Tesla is diminishing rapidly, Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Porsche seems yesterday news. Polestars aim to combine a discreet but at the same time exciting design with really good road handling is a good way to go. I like the somewhat understated way Polestar presents itself. I also like the decision to go away from the unnecessary obsession to have an extreme 0-100 kmph speed. That has given Polestar a way to optimize for road handling and comfort instead, and perhaps better range.

@chasingcars
@chasingcars 22 дня назад
Agreed. Basically Polestar is abandoning being a Tesla rival (although the Polestar 2 survives in that segment). The Polestar 3 and 4 aim at Porsche. As for Polestar 3 sales, the entire segment (SUV Large Over $70K) was less than 30,000 vehicles in Australia in all of 2023. For reference BMW delivered 3682 X5s and 822 iXs. Porsche did 1546 Cayennes. Polestar would be doing well to crack 1000 full-year deliveries of the Polestar 3 in Australia, I'd wager.

Good question. If I was shopping in the $150-180K SUV segment, the Polestar 3 *would* be in the mix because I like how it looks and how it drives. The BMW iX is slightly better to drive again - but the looks polarise, and visually I am not a fan (subjective). Polestar 3 is definitely ahead of EQE SUV in terms of interior and driving. Frankly, at the current time, I'd probably still buy a BMW X5 if I wasn't tied to EV in this space.

@georgechandler7645
@georgechandler7645 20 дней назад
I agree. I live on the Gold Coast with hot sunny days. A sunshade is a necessity and I wouldn't buy this model without one. Also until fast charging becomes more accessible why would you buy an EV unless you charge at home? I drive by all the charging stations ( non Tesla ) that are full and wonder why would anyone be buying an EV now? Tesla are dumping all their models globally and car lots are full of EV's in North America that dealers are stuck with. I think the Hybrid ( my 2022 Merc 450 GLE ) still offers some efficiency with luxury. Give me a call when Polestar drops the price by 80K and adds a sunshade. Until then I'm happy with my local Ampol.

After the first year, most of them got added , but even then they are not 100% reliable. For example remote start/climate or even general app connection to the car works probably 7/10 times. General speed of internet/connection (despite the 5G) is very slow. Been told by the Volvo dealer that Estonian market cars don’t have an option to install modem/car sim so it’s connected via the phone internet/ Bluetooth…maybe that’s the issue.

The audio sounds very weird compared to most of your videos as well, like their is shaking going on yet the video is fine. So you a 'trying to like EVs but not really' journalist then based on your comment about them not being fun to drive, what will happen when there is no more new fossils to drive around polluting the atmosphere from their tailpipe you'll only have EV's to drive and there are definitely some fun EV's to drive out there pretty sure other EV journalists and influencers would agree with that.

The residual values of electric cars are way down. Even leasing these vehicles will get much more expensive as leasing companies need to sell these on once they get them back to recover their costs. Extremely risky to buy a used EV as you don’t know when you’ll be due for an expensive battery replacement. An ICE car has inherent value even when it is 20 years old.

Why is it a Chinese car. You mean the parent company is Chinese. Your apple phone is made in china, your android phone too. Jaguar and land rover are Indian cars then as they are owned by Tata. Most car brands have overseas parent company's. You are paying for the spec. Air suspension, active torque vectoring, split div and decoupling. You won't find a car with this spec under this price. The maccan is the only competition really. I had a Tesla for 5 years and as good as it was it was dull as a dishcloth. They are now everywhere too, the prestige has gone.
