The first review I've seen that doesn't praise these up and down. I'm convinced they're very good, but I'm glad someone could lay out the flaws up front.

Oh hey, I remember seeing you on Reddit. Nice review! I agree with EQ these definitely compete with the 600 and 650, although I find the driver to actually be more dynamic and capable in the bass than those other two. I also find the upper mids (1-3kHz) to be more natural and less shouty than the 600. When it comes to treble though, I agree they are not as smooth and defined as the 650/600.

DivineCurrent hey! Thanks for checking out the review! I think I only feel like the upper midrange is a little forward because I’m sensitive to that region, and even then I only change it by like 1dB. Also, yeah, I totally agree; these have more slam than the other 600-series Sennheiser’s.

I was kinda puzzled that you said they lack bass and bass resolution. The bass response extends better on 58x than 6xx. If you look at the frequency response you will clearly see that 58x extends further down than 6xx does. I have both 58x and 6xx but 58x slams harder and bass decay was faster on 58x which makes them more refined on the bass department. I agree with you that there are better headphones for jazz or classical music at this price point, but IMO 58x is suited very well for almost any genre out there.
@chrono-headphonereviews242
@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
Edmond Han indeed better extension out of the box than the 6XX, but when adding a bass shelf via EQ, the 58X distorts a little sooner. Also, That’s interesting for me it’s the other way around, I think the 6XX is more defined out of the box than the 58X, but maybe I’m being fooled by FR. Also, I completely agree that they do very well in most genres, but I have to be honest and say that, in my experience, the highs here were pretty lacking. Still a great headphone, though. It’s always my go-to recommendation hahaha

I have this pair of headphones and have had it for about 2 years. I hear the same thing as what Chrono is saying for sound. I swapped out the pads because the stock ones condensed so much that it was touching my ears. With replacements, not being the stock pads, it changed the sound. I was sold on these due to a reviewer claiming these to be the same drivers as an expensive version from Sennheiser and had the gaming capabilities I was looking for for CS:GO. I also love the lightness and the cord, but the clamping pressure was really strong but fixable.

i also own k7xx, These are very fun for certain genre esp if you can eq. Bjork and Grimes come to mind due to the instrument separation. Opening them up alil bit does help. Helps it seem less layered/overlapped. My K7XX were getting worn out got 1st editions. The sennheisers will be my new daily. Its definitely made listening to those artists even more enjoyable. As well as zepplin or CCR. Other good examples of music ive come to enjoy even more with these cans. My phone is g8x thinq and it has its own eq as well as staging options in its dac. Also using Modi 3 and cavelli tube hybrid.

You don’t need EQ with these. You need a good source, these are headphones that benefit from a good Dac and good source material. There are headphones that sound as good as these and sound different, but very few phones that are as musical as these headphones. My search is over.

Since you do not recommend these for gaming. What would you recommend for pure competitive FPS? One that has great soundstage and imaging and that would work well with a ~100€ amp/dac. I play on a Razer blade so I would love to have a portable audio setup so no bulky amps etc.. I heard that dt 990s (120€) are good, maybe akg 712? (180€) Maybe something better? Thanks in advance!

How would you describe one as grainy sounding? What is grain? Thanks alot for ur straight forward reviews!
@chrono-headphonereviews242
@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
I always have a hard time explaining these things because they are not universally defined hahaha However, when I talk about grain or resolution, I am referring to how clear the audio sounds. Think of it like looking through a window. If it is a very clear window, looking through to he other side will be very easy, and there will be no blemishes. If the window is maybe a little foggy, it won't be as easy to see what is on the other side--it's not as revealing. another analogy would be film grain. When you add film grain to an image there is a lot of "noise" added to the picture even though you can still see the image as a whole. I hope that helps, sorry if it was more confusing.

what software (or hardware) did you use for eq?
@bepresent4235
@bepresent4235 4 года назад
I have the 58x, and really liked your EQ settings on it. I saw you liked the Sundara stock. Would you say your EQd 58x has similar FR/tonality to the Sundara? I guess a broader question would be, do you EQ to a personal preference? Or were you just trying to fix the issues with the 58x?
@chrono-headphonereviews242
@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback on the EQ settings! Yes, when I EQ I do have a personal target preference curve. It's similar to the harman target but with more energy around the treble region, a little less bass and less upper midrange. So, in terms of FR, yes, I guess I get the 58X close to the Sundara in tonality.
@bepresent4235
@bepresent4235 4 года назад
Thanks for the answer. On a personal note, what's your favorite headphone for listening to heavier genres of music (Hard rock, metal)? Do you like the Sundara or 4xx for music like this? I like your sound preference, sorry for the onslaught of questions. :D
@chrono-headphonereviews242
@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
@@bepresent4235 Oh, don't worry, I really enjoy chatting with fellow audio enthusiasts! I mean, I listen mainly to rock and I'm a guitarist so I will tell you right now that for anything that is rock-like with electric guitars, I can't think of anything better under $500 than the Sennehisers, at least in my opinion. To me the way they reproduce the midrange tones and guitars just sounds so natural for those genres!
@dplariosa
@dplariosa 4 года назад
I am new to the "audiophile" midfi space. I predominantly listen to rap and EDM. My main music cans are the HE4XX and gaming is done on modified SHP9500s. I run everything through a Modi 3\Magni Heresy Schiit stack. I do EQ my music to help achieve desired characteristics to my music. So I just ordered the HD58Xs to experience the Sennheiser sound signature and went with the 58X over the 6XX\600\650\etc because of the reviewers who said these had an overall "darker" tone, which I prefer. All that being said, in your opinion do you think I made the correct decision choosing these cans over the other's previously mentioned? Or do you think I lowered the quality of the experience sacrificing detail and imaging in search of that specific signature? Also, great review. You just earned another sub.

@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
Donny Lariosa thanks for checking out the review! I don’t really think that you can go wrong with HD 58X, they do sound great. However, since you already have a good amp, I think that 6XX would have been a better option because of their better extension in the highs, and they don’t have a 5.5k peak. I think that they would sound great for rap and other modern genres!
@dplariosa
@dplariosa 4 года назад
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 Thanks for the reply. I totally understand your perspective. If I could bother you with one more question...do you think it would be worth trying to find a used pair of 600s\650s over the 6XX or just get the 6XX and call it a day? Are either of those that much of a better representation to justify the extra effort\cost? Thanks again!
@chrono-headphonereviews242
@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
Donny Lariosa I mean, if you already have the 58X don’t worry too much about it, as they all have a similar tonal characteristic. However, if you are within the Drop return policy I would exchange them for 6XX. Also, the 6XX is the exact same thing as the 650; made with the same parts and in the same factory-I would just go with the Drop version. There have been some rumors going around online saying they’re different from the 650, but they are not. The only change that 6XX (and all of Sennheiser, really) have had in the last couple years is that there are more made in Romania instead of Ireland because Sennheiser opened a new factory there. I have tried various different 6XXs and 650s, they’ve all been the exact same.

Picked these up from drop and want to try them for a few weeks along with a pair of DT 990 pros. You said these aren’t great for gaming but I’m wondering if you’d think the 990s would be much better? Also, I’ve got an Astro Mixamp Pro right now and I wanted to know if you think this’ll put out enough power to use either of these? Thanks!
@chrono-headphonereviews242
@chrono-headphonereviews242 4 года назад
Yeah I think that for FPS games the DT 990’s are much better. Also, the Mixamp isn’t actually an amp, it’s more of a DAC that applies different DSP settings to the A40’s-you won’t be able to drive the DT 990 off it, unfortunately.

Great review! I really wish I bought one before Drop shut down the EU warehouse, they were going for like 120€. I already have a 6XX but I wanted something similar but cheaper for when I'm not at home (I use open backs a lot when walking around because I need to stay aware of my surroundings, also my dog is capable of getting himself run over by every car lol); settled for a Porta Pro for now but I might get a 58X if there's some discount in the future (shipping and taxes are a pain though), unless I find another good sounding openback that can be driven by a phone. Any ideas? Anyway keep it up, really enjoying your reviews!

I know these types of questions are annoying af but do you think the Jubilee are worth the sidegrade over 579/599's for general use? Looking at frequency graphs comparing 599's to 58x, they seem extremely similar. Combine that with the 599's going on sale for $100 every Prime Day/Black Friday, I'm finding it really hard to justify pulling the trigger despite their universal praise. Doesn't help that when I listened to Oluv's sound demo that they sounded extremely similar to even my 579's.

You don't need an amp with these? Meanwhile, I feel like you need an amp with even the HD 559s, which are 50 Ohm headphones. Sure, they sound fine on mobile devices and whatnot, but they open up and sound much better with a good DAC or amp in my opinion. I used to own the 58X, but the clamping force was too much for me, and it didn't get better. Still felt like they needed an amp to sound their best. Just sound sort of weak without one.
