Sennheiser HD58X Jubilee (Review and Comparison with HD6XX and K7XX)

Disclaimer: my testing involved both unbalanced and balanced connections to an Aune X7S, however my results only include unbalanced. Running the Jubilee balanced did nothing to the sound (as far as I could tell), but did affect the HD6XX.

When you said 6xx(650) is more neutral it was a bit strange to hear, unless all graphs I seen are lying. . BTW, I already decided on 58x, just wanted to hear your take.

old vid i know, but the cups aren't deeper at all. the only difference are the grills on the 58x are flatter compared to the 6xx or 650's curved grills.

I ended up choosing the 58x for the simple reason I can easily power it off of an XBox controller or a Apple Dongle Dac/Amp. I use them primarily for gaming and love them! This is the only part of your review that I think you ignored and is important, the ability to drive the 58x is less than the requirement of an amp for the 6xx.

I mostly tested them both from a desktop amplifier and the difference in power was around 1 or 2 hours. I've used my HD600 and the 6XX with my phone and didn't really find them THAT bad. Glad you're enjoying the 58X!

@@robertckassow8445 Soundstage is much less important for FPS than imaging. Imaging is excellent. Wide soundstage makes positional cues very hard to distinguish, intimate presentation with excellent imaging is what you want and what both the 6xx and 58x excel at.

@@jasonfranciosa Are you running any Amp / DAC with your HD58X? If so, what are you using? I plan on buying either a Mayflower O2 or Mayflower ARC. Main reasoning is so I can boost the treble on the 58X and use them to their full potential. Many individual, within their reviews have said they if I do get an DAC to go for the HD6XX? However, I am one about looks and sound. The color is bad with the HD6XX and I'm not sure if the enhanced treble would be best with fps. I'm new to all this, lol

Im not an expert but I spent an hour listening to about 8 headphones in the $100-$400 range. I ended up buying the VModa m100 master and couldn't be happier. Compared to others the bass and mids are excellent. Highs are good too. They just sound balanced full and detailed even without an amp. 150ohms. Very comfortable and built like a tank.

I have the HD58x since I think two years now. I'm happy with them. I'm thinking of buying the HD560s, but I'm not sure if I will be happy with their increased hights. The HD58x has a narrow soundstage, yes, but the overall sound is very natural. And if one get used to the narrow soundstage compared to other headphones, it's okay. It's natural.

Nice review , I mostly agreed In my opinon there is no headphone that can do it all we have to change between some models that we like . For example HD58X are great for songs they sound flat for my taste they have no soundstage at all in my opinion for an open back , and there is no separation on vocals , but …. they are so gentle relaxed sound every instrument every vocal feels like its on the same direction , and for me the fact that has low bass reminds me the Beyerdynamic 990pro but without the to much brightness at highs . For me HD58X are great for listening music , but no way for gaming or movies or opera and everything that needs space to the sound.

AKG 7xx needs a good amp. It is a headphone that sounds COMPLETELY different when properly amped. Contrary to common beliefs that 7xx does not need much powerful amp due to its low impedance, it is its low sensibility that requires more amount of current to bring its full potential. 7xx has a unique characteristic that has not so high or low resistance(62ohms), and not so high or low sensibility(105dB/V) which makes it relatively difficult to drive. Amps should be able to produce at least 100mW @ 300 ohms or 1Watt @ 32 ohms to properly feed K7xx. When I first fed K7xx with Fiio E17k, I was so disappointed with its tinny and thin sounds this cans produced. Especially with treble being so harsh. It was clear evidence that K7xx was under amped. When I upgraded the amp with a much more powerful one, the difference was a night and day. It added so much body to all frequencies which made the sound so much richer and fuller.

@chuckolatte600
@chuckolatte600 6 лет назад
Yeah, particularly since the upgraded cable is balanced XLR. As far as I remember, it gave the 6xx a little extra sparkle in the highs (without introducing extra sibilance) and controlled the low end to be cleaner yet still juicy. IF you have the 6xx, I strongly recommend running them balanced.

The Aune X7S. It's a really awesome amp considering it offers very clean audio, balanced audio, and offers preouts. Two downsides to it: 1. The preouts don't mute when you have a headphone plugged in (meaning if you have speakers connected to them, you'd have to turn them off manually to only use the headphones). 2. While it is balanced audio (and does make a difference over 1/4 inch in most cases), it is not "TRUE" balanced because it does not offer balanced XLR inputs for your DAC (which btw, should also be balanced to receive "true" balanced audio. Not really worth going that extra mile, which makes the X7S so attractive. I.e., if you're using the 6xx, running them balanced is a no-brainer. GO FOR IT.

@jaredferguson2999
@jaredferguson2999 6 лет назад
Björn Nordin I know you want his answer, but I'll give you some advice: don't get balanced. There have been plenty of tests showing that there is almost no difference between balance and unbalanced connections on short runs. If, say you use a small studio room and you keep your pc and setup out in another room, then you should go balanced because over long distance unbalanced cables pick up electrical interference. And even then, you'd might not notice a difference. Balanced doesn't add resolution, it just lowers interference. There's plenty of unbalanced cables that have extremely low interference as well and for a lot cheaper than balanced cables. BUT, the aune x7s does have a powerful balanced output and if you need something like that it's a good option. I suspect that a lot of people conflate the difference between high power and low power with balanced outputs because that balanced outputs are traditionally more powerful than their unbalanced counterparts. So, of course, they think the difference is in the balanced configuration as opposed to their headphones just finally being driven properly. You can look up the graphs, and I recommend that you do, as you'll find that the distortion is almost identical and definitely escapes our hearing ability. The Placebo might help your experience tho
@bnordin66able
@bnordin66able 6 лет назад
Thx for the reply, it was kind of what i was looking for actually. I understand that there should be some benefits to get balanced cables for interferens problems, but my hopes where that i should gain a massive jump in sound quality also. Ahh well, i save a few on the dac/amp section and perhaps move on to some Beyer DT 1990 instead. Again, thank you for the answer and have a nice day.
@chuckolatte600
@chuckolatte600 6 лет назад
Sorry, kinda late but here's my input! I own the x7s but not the x1s. From what I've heard about the x1s, it's a really good DAC, but kind of a weak amp. Therefore, I believe the x7s may be worth the money for you. To my ears, running them balanced had little to no effect on sound quality with the 58x. If it's about the interference, go balanced. If not, I'd rather spend on a Schiit amp for a similar price.

I think both are equally open, but if you're looking for the more fun of the two, go with the 58X (although the only extra "fun" part for me was the low end). I still prefer the 6xx out of the two. @@picapica201 people say the hd660s doesn't need an amp to drive soI bought a zen dac v2 and they still sound underwhelming asf for $500. there's a gap in the middle where if you do an attack with a long sword in monster hunter rise, you don't hear the ground slam. My $120 philips sound better not because it's bassy or because it's V-shaped but because it performs overall way better than the HD660s in games. I'm not talking about competitive games with hearing footsteps and what not. I'm talking about the different sounds i can hear like the soundtrack or ambient sounds in Zelda Botw for example. I think testing headphones with video games are a much easier way to test out the headphones performance over just listening to music. Its still funny how a $120 headphone beats a $500 one in almost every test i threw at it both in games, movies and music. The only thing I did notice that was better on the HD660s was in Zelda botw, you can hear which direction the wind is blowing as I pan the camera around so that's one detail it wins over the Fidelio X2HR.

This feels like a dumb question but I really need it answered. I'm trying to decide on what headphones I should get under $200 and my top 3 choices are the he4xx, the hd 6xx, and the hd 58x, in no particular order. Out of all of them I feel like the HD 6xx is the best all-rounder but I don't know if that's true. There's two things I want to do with them and that's listen to music and game nothing else. I have heard mixed reviews for all of them for gaming but all of them sound like they are okay in general for it but my main priority is music. I mainly listen to electronic music (house, big room, chill, ambient, stuff with a Beat instead of the wub wub garbage) and I tend to listen to music with higher-pitched female vocals or deep drops and consistent Beats. I don't really care about quantity of Bass I rather care about the quality of it, so out of those 3 or any other suggestions which would be the best for gaming(explosions, gunshots, all that stuff) and the music I listed? I'm planning to get one of these by Christmas but I'm really not sure on which one to get, what worries me is apparently the HD 6XX is bad for electronic apparently however I've also heard mixed reviews about that too.
@chuckolatte600
@chuckolatte600 6 лет назад
Ok so I have experience with TWO of the three on your list. Given your needs, I'd recommend the 6XX first, the K7XX second, the 58X third, and the 4XX fourth. Here's why: 1. To me, the 6XX sound the best out of all these (especially music). They also have the best build quality out of the four. I used my 6XX for gaming and listen to music. They don't have a MASSIVE soundstage, but they are quite accurate which makes them awesome for FPS games IMO. As far as their bass goes, I enjoyed it. What other people mean by saying that their bass isn't that good is just that it isn't massive and pounding. It does extend relatively deep though. I listened to all sorts of music with them though--no problems and still enjoyed EDM on them. Also, these are best for vocals. I think you'd be fine with no big bass since it makes the overall sound smoother, richer, and more detailed. 2. I recommend the K7XX because to me they sound similar to the 58X but offer "better" build quality and MUCH BETTER comfort. Keep in mind, you'll need an amp for all of these except for the 58X. Massive soundstage so perfect for games, has a tiny extra bump in the subbass which you'll definitely benefit from for EDM. 3. The 58X still sound really good, but build quality is not as good as on the 6XX and are not as comfortable as the K7XX. However, if you are never planning on getting an amp (which I STRONGLY recommend getting for 99% of headphones out there), you may want to consider these. 4. I've heard decent things about the 4XX's sound but TERRIBLE things about their build quality. Automatic plan Z right there, I'd rather go for any of these other three. Hope this helps, man!
@darkstride7081

@@chuckolatte600 thank you soooooo much! However I've heard that the k7xx is less forgiving for lesser quality audio but I've also heard that the hd6xx is harder to drive with say your phone or even a good amp. I've also heard that the build quality specifically wires inside of the cans of the k7xx are quite fragile. So long as none of those bad things are true I will be quite happy and I agree with what you said about the he4xx I will knock that off my list. Also out of those two which is the better one for 3D sound? It comes in to use a lot for gaming but surprisingly also comes in to use quite a bit for music I've noticed. Also if you don't mind I've had a little trouble identifying exactly what part of my songs are sub-bass, probably because I'm only listening to my music currently Through My hyperx Cloud Core 1 headset, which has great audio don't get me wrong but it's nowhere near clear enough to hear the difference between mids and bases in some cases hence why I'm upgrading. EDIT:I also don't know what this "Sennheiser veil" is either
@chuckolatte600
@chuckolatte600 6 лет назад
1. I don't find the K7XX to be so unforgiving. I've had mine for about a year and a half now and I use them for pretty much everything except for gaming (just because I prefer to use my hd600 for gaming with music). 2. I've used the 6XX with my phone. It's doable and I don't think you'd complain but I DEFINITELY would suggest getting an amp for them asap. BTW I've found the K7XX to be a little harder to drive than the 6XX, if not just as hard. 3. As far as 3D sound goes, it really depends. K7XX have a wider soundstage (the sounds feel more like they're around you rather than right next to you), but 6XX have a more accurate soundstage (easier to pinpoint enemies' location in games). At that point, it's just a matter of choice between wide vs. accurate. 4. Sub-bass isn't something you hear, it's more something you feel. The rumble, per se. 5. Sennheiser veil is perceived by some to be a bit of a roll-off in the highs which removes some abrasiveness but also detail. I've heard this veil in the 6XX but didn't found it to lose detail. It just made the headphone a smoother listen. Don't worry about that veil, just understand that the 6XX are slightly darker and warmer than the K7XX. Hope it helps!
