On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, I TFC. Antonio May was traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 in the left lane when I observed a red SUV with California license plate 8ZRY630 traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 in the right lane. I then observed the vehicle veering right crossing the white line and driving left of center. I activated my lights to stop the SUV in the area of the 77-mile marker. I conducted a passenger-side approach of the vehicle and advised the driver who I was and the reasoning for the stop. While giving the reason for the stop, I observed an open brown paper bag in the passenger seat that had multiple packages of THC gummies inside. I then asked the driver who was later identified as Ivory Harris if he had insurance and registration for the vehicle, He stated, that it was a rental car and that he rented the vehicle. I then advised Mr. Harris to exit the vehicle and to come talk to me at my patrol unit. Once at my patrol unit, Mr. Harris asked, "what was the reason you stopped me?" I advised him he veered to the right crossing the fog line. I then asked Mr. Harris where was he coming from. He stated, California. I then asked how he ended up in California. He stated he dropped off a load down there and that he's a truck driver and now heading back. I then asked again about his itinerary. He stated he drove his truck from Missouri to North Carolina. I asked where he was heading to now? He stated he was heading home. I asked where is home? He stated, North Carolina. I asked how long had he been on the road. He stated, about five or six hours. I then asked how long he stayed in California? He stated, for the weekend, he has family in Ocean Side. I then notified Troop J dispatch to run Mr. Harris to check the status of his driver's license and criminal history. While waiting on Troop J dispatch to get a return on Mr. Harris, I asked Mr. Harris when he had to return the rental car. He stated it had to be back on Thursday. Due to Mr. Harris' inconsistency with his itinerary and nervousness with him stuttering , I asked Mr. Harris again to explain to me his travel itinerary. He stated he delivered a truck from North Carolina to California. I then asked Mr. Harris if he had ever been arrested for anything. He stated, not recently, and that he had a DUI back in 2013 that he beat and he did federal time back in 2012. I then asked if he was driving nonstop to North Carolina. He stated, "no I'm going to stop in Tennessee to rest". Troop J dispatch advised me Mr. Harris had a criminal history and he was a convicted felon. Due to Mr. Harris being a felon, I asked Mr. Harris if he had any guns inside the vehicle. He stated, "no, I don't have any guns." I asked for consent to search the vehicle for guns. He stated, "no, I don't have any guns." I then advised him that I was asking for consent to check the vehicle, in which consent was granted. I then exited my patrol unit. Once I exited my patrol unit, I began to search the vehicle. While searching, I once again observed a brown paper bag in the passenger seat with multiple multi-colored packages of THC gummies. I continued to search the vehicle when I observed a black suitcase located in the back seat behind the passenger side. I was unable to open the suitcase due to not having the number code. I then asked Mr. Harris what the code to the suitcase was. He stated "I don't know the code." I then advised Mr. Harris due to the multiple packages of THC gummies located in the brown bag that he was detained at this time. I asked Mr. Harris if was there anything illegal in the suitcase and vehicle. He stated, "no Sir." I then continued to search the trunk of the vehicle. When I opened the truck I observed two large brown boxes and a large black duffle bag. I then opened one of the brown boxes and observed approximately 20 clear packages that appeared to be methamphetamine. Once the contraband was located, Mr. Harris was placed in the back of my unit where he was read his Miranda rights. I then was assisted by Cpl. Bernard Pettit, TFC. Jake Price, and Trp. Ana Escamilla. While conducting an inventory of the vehicle, I then located approximately nine bricks that appeared to be cocaine inside the black suitcase located in the back seat behind the passenger seat.
Mr. Harris was transported to the Pope County Jail and booked for Trafficking a Controlled Substance and Possession with the Purpose to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony). All evidence included the nine Kilos of cocaine, The 20 individual bags of methamphetamine weighing 120 lbs., THC gummies located in the brown bag, nine multi-colored boxes with THC pens inside, and a cellphone that was located on Mr. Harris' person.
