Ted Reed Syncopation is considered one of the drum book bibles. It is a reading book that is open to so much interpretation. There are many Ted Reed swing exercises out there. In this episode, I demonstrate one of the best swing exercises that helped my jazz drumming and helped build my weak drum hand.

This is a great lesson. I’ve found if I’m struggling with the coordination, I just play quarter notes on the ride and keep the hat on two and 4.

We used this book in high school, the US Navy drum and bugle corps, and in private tutor drum lessons. You are absolutely correct. Anyone who truly wishes to read and understand music, this book is an absolute must! Great, great book!

That is why it is considered one of the 'drum book bibles'. Thanks for commenting!

Good description of the sticking pattern of this basic jazz groove. Somebody should reprint the book with modern notation because these old hand written notations are small, quirky and hard to read.

I have a copy of this book but I have no idea how to use it, read it, the stickings, etc. This video was somewhat illuminating but I’m still kinda lost.

This is a great ostinato system. It is also great to assign long and short notes to various drums while maintaining an ostinato or rhythmic pattern.

Thanks Andy! Yes, assigning long and short notes sounds like a very good idea. I will check it out

I know the interpretation of Alan Dawson on Syncopation book (same pages), they are also very useful but that's very interesting and I didn't saw that type of work on that book. Normally you read the 8notes with L hand and the quarters with Kick also there are few ways to work on the same sheets. If you don't mind, where did you learn that type of working on that book ?

Thanks for chiming in! I learned this exercise back in College when I took the music program. It was part of my drum lessons. Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They had 40 Ted Reed Syncopation exercises as part of the drum program. I went through them all back then and they were great exercises. Unfortunately, over the years I lost my notebook that had all those exercises, but I recently contacted a colleague of mine who also went to the same school and music program several years later than me, and he has all the notes and is in the process of scanning them and sending them to me. I am planning on recording a video for each exercise. So stay tuned for that!

Why don’t you play all 4 of those eighth notes in the first exercise in b line?
@WholeLottaDrumming
@WholeLottaDrumming 7 месяцев назад
Sorry for the late reply. Been slowly transitioning into a new RU-vid recording studio. More videos coming soon so please stay tuned! In regards to your question. If you are talking about the bar that has (B), those 4 8th notes has a tie between the 2nd and 3rd 8th notes. This basically combines both of those 8th notes equaling a quarter note. On a tuned musical instrument such as a piano, that 2nd 8th note is sustained up to the end of the 3rd 8th note which will give it that quarter note sound. But from a percussive perspective that 3rd 8th note is silent. The tie silences the next note. Therefore (B) will sound like (A) & (C) when using the bass drum. Hope that makes sense.

This needs to be used with context. You really would benefit more if you practiced kick sheets. You really won't play these exercises with a big band. Sure, you will get something out of the book, and yeah, I get it--it has been around for a long time and considered a "standard," but in the real world, you wouldn't play these exercises very much at all in a live situation. The Steve Houghton book Studio & Big Band Drumming is a much better resource.

Hey John, thanks for chiming in! This is not meant to be a big band exercise. It's just one of many different types of swing exercises they taught us at The Humber College jazz music program. They had 40 different Ted Reed exercises for the kit. This one was one of my favourites because filling in the missing triplets helped me with my Purdie / Porcaro type shuffles I played in a big band for 6 years and I can honestly say that there were times where I would read the figures with the bass drum especially if they were played by the trombone section, and often would fill in the missing triplets with my snare. And it was this exercise that helped me develop this skill.
@tootallforbaseball
@tootallforbaseball 3 года назад
@@WholeLottaDrumming It does develop skill, but you have to be able to put that into context. I was at the Navy School of music twice, but we never used that book. We did use the Houghton book, which is all about context. An exercise is useless unless you understand how it can be used and where it should be used.
