I've always loved Stewart Copeland's snare sound

The snare that comes in on the chorus of Spirits In The Material World is one of the best sounds ever made by human beings.

Dude, DUDE. I could go on for hours. I rate Message as one of the ten greatest drum performances in the history of drum performances. The drama, the flair, the creativity, the power and drive, the sheer musicality. And that “push and pull”. Drives me crazy every time I hear it. Copeland’s a titan in a band of titans. What a band. Peace out, brother.

I saw them in Colorado 5 weeks ago, their first night back after 14 years (or whatever). Such a great show! Being a drummer, and having Stewart as one of my favorite drummers, my eyes were fixated on him the entire night. And that's saying something! Les is one of my favorite humans as well. Well, he actually might be an alien. As great of a concert as that was, I hope it's not the last, given all the crazy shit that's going down.

I learned so much trying to cover Police songs in high school! Like you said, NO other drummer like him! You had to learn to fight every natural instinct for when to hit the crash, how to fill, when to stay away from the snare... Really forced you to expand your skillset, so great. I still find him to be the most intimidating drummer to cover, in the pop/RnR world. I mean, who else can drive a song so viscously with just the kick and high hat? Amazing talent. Great video!

FUCK YEAH! Stewart the mutha fuckin man Copland! So original. So talented. Such a musician. Put the beat on the 3 and got himself in the drums hall of fame! Added a delay pedal and and a noise gate and changed the landscape of music in the 80’s.

I saw Stewart live during The Police reunion tour. Once was at Fenway Park and the other time was at MSG. What was cool about that tour is they had three big screens and one was dedicated to Stewart. I was very impressed. I always knew he was great/unique but to see him play live was another experience.

Went to the reunion show at the hockey arena in St. Paul, MN. Our seats were just OK, but I realized they deliberately hadn't sold the seats behind the stage so we went to the balcony behind and above Stewart. When the show started, the lights/equipment went up completely blocking Andy and Sting but I didn't care. I watched the whole show as if I was 40 feet tall standing over Stewart's shoulder. Never even got a glimpse of Andy or Sting, but I was more than satisfied to get a "private" drum lesson from Stewart.

one of my favorite Copeland quotes or theory was keeping a beat without primarily only using the snare, but using cymbals, bass drum or toms to keep the beat going.

Really well said about how Stewart could play these crazy busy/intricate parts that still drove the music and didn’t distract like many people do. Gavin Harrison is really good at playing this way as well.

For guitar players, Andy Summers is just as important as Stewart Copeland. I remember spending months trying to master the "Andy Summers Chord," which is basically a power chord with an added 9th. It's a bit of a stretch. He brought sophistication to punk, ska, new wave. Showed everyone how to elevate their guitar playing, or at least showed us that it's possible.

Great episode on the Police. Not a surprise on the Caribbian/raggae callout. This was when Bob Marley was big and ska was influential, taking a great style and making is something new and different. I really miss the music of the time, layered, complex, sophisticated. The elements of making music classic and timeless.

My ringtone in high school was The Police (Nokia brick phone version). This song can have a lot of meanings especially with everything going on. 12Tone (music theorist channel) did a great breakdown of how the tones keep making you feel a certain way then with the next line make you feel something completely different.

Thank you! I always like seeing anyone give props to Stewart Copeland, and The Police in general. I feel like they kind of fall into Blue Oyster Cult category of legendary and somehow under appreciated in my opinion especially both bands earlier works respectively. So since we're doing under serviced legends... Clyde Stubblefield or Bernard Purdie? I will keep asking. Lol.

Actually Stewart Copeland isnt Reggae influenced, what people assume is reggae rythms are actually the rythms he grew up hearing in the middle east. His father was a member of the CIA and thats where he was stationed. His father also raised him to play Jazz which he always hated, he wanted to play like Gunger Baker and Mitch Mitchell.

Feedback sandwich. I love your point about not being married to the metronome. Feeling/groove > accuracy every time! As someone who binges musical "react" channels, you are dominating the screen while holding sticks and have a drum in front of you [setting a certain anticipation] but only use them once to illustrate a rimshot. As a new viewer I kept expecting you to use those sticks, maybe break down some of the rythyms or something. It feels weird when people have instruments as props and not tools. If you aren't playing, you dont need them! That said you have a really likable personality and a majestic beard, so thanks and good fortunes to you!

you know you said "theres the stuff thats not in the original", but really hardly any of stewarts live playing is ever like the recordings. He describes playing the drums as an experience happening right in that moment every time, I think he always lets whatever he feels come out. You can actually hear it in the recordings too, verses will have super similar structures on the same song but he'll change small things here and there. Its not like you can learn one verse of a police song and say "now I know how to play the verses of that song."
