Nice videos man! If you do another video like this. Check out Richie Martinez - My Head Sometimes. Hes the drummer from arch echo and low key one of the best drummers in the world.
@Otie Jason music, subjectively, took a nose dive, as you said. But this guy is insanely good. And I am a Portnoy fan, who started learning drums because of Portnoy.
@Otie Jason Disagree. Their music was being dumbed down by Portnoy and his annoying backing growls. They've gone back to their prog roots and Portnoy has gone from lame project to lame project.
Golem29 You should listen to Transatlantic, Mike Portnoy has been a part of that band since at least 2000 when their first album was released. Latest album being released 2014. A really great prog rock band, not mediocre whatsoever.
I've seen DT live three times in the Mangini era, and he is EASILY the tightest member in the band live. The most insane drum parts of the most insane DT songs are absolute child's play for him. I've lost count of how many times he was literally laughing while playing ridiculous parts with complete ease. I've found myself fixated on him and ignoring the other members during songs, which in a band like DT is no easy task. I have no doubt he could play an entire concert one-handed and if you closed your eyes you wouldn't even know it. The man is a god amongst mortals.
Also seen them three times during Mangini era (didn't learn about the band till ADTOE), and I agree, big time. Even tho guitar is my instrument and I admire Petrucci greatly, he's not always quite that on point when live.
I totally agree. I was crushed when I found out Portnoy was leaving Dream Theater, but when the tryouts started, and I already knew a little about Mangini, and I thought, what if he could be the next drummer. And, aside from all the initial criticism, he has proven to be a worthy successor to the drum throne. I wish Portnoy all the best in his endeavors, but Dream Theater has moved on.
Exact same experience. Saw them 3 times with Portnoy and finally caught them with Mangini in 2019 and I could not take my eyes off of him. Other worldly player.
19/16 isn’t all that hard to understand. Like I say in the vid: it’s 4/4 + 3 16th notes. Takes a while to internalize but it’s one of the easiest odd-time signatures. It just seems scary because it’s “19/16!”
I think that is the reason why some DT fans says he doesn't have that "power" they see physically. After watching this reaction, I have understood the way he plays. I'm not a hardcore musician tho but I appreciate these kind of things. :)
Guillermo Oporta no doubt mike M is a monster but i still prefer mike p in the band , i just like the flavor he had in the band , mike m for me is to robotic
I am not a drummer, I do appreciate great technical drummers it is sad how people hate on him so much. People need to watch the auditions and who was there to audition it was very impressive list. I really like Mangini he has great skills and has a great personality.
Yeah those audition videos were so cool! You could feel the instant chemistry between Mike Mangini and the boys. The only other dude who would’ve nailed it I feel is Thomas Lang, but Mangini fits more in a band like DT.
I guess there was no escaping being judged after he joined one of the most beloved prog bands in the world, having to fill the shoes of one of progressive metal's pioneering drummers. It was like when Josh Clinghoffer joined Red Hot Chilli Peppers having to fill John Frusciante's shoes, one of music's greatest guitarists. It doesn't matter how great he is, he will be judged because he is a different human being and a different musician, who said he doesn't want to be Portnoy or copy him. You can't blame him either; he's a musician and an artist and a life of trying to emulate someone else before you sounds incredibly boring and unreasonable.
Sad thing is his attitude towards the DT legacy and their music in general. Also MP was not only a great drummer but very important composer, you can't say that about MM.
Mangini has more than proven that he deserves to be in Dream theater, we all love Portnoy but he left and Mangini wants to be there and has been giving his 100% since he joined the band which is almost a decade ago so it’s about time people understand that he is AMAZING. This video will help people get it, so thanks for making it and good job cause it’s nice too have a video that is not too dumb but not too smart for people like me that are non drummers.
Portnoy was forced out because he wanted a little time off to tour for Avenged Sevenfold when their drummer passed. Mangini has amazing talent, but he never looks like he's enjoying the music, just that he's there to play the drums and collect a check.
Had the pleasure of seeing them in Lisbon in February. Guy's insane. All of them are. The tones that he introduces with the toms and stuff Portnoy did that but with the cymbals. His work on cymbals was out of this world. All in all MM is much more proficient with less show and movement. Portnoy was a show within the show. Long story short i love them both
Mate I don't know how I never heard Dream Theater before but damn. I jumped down the rabbit hole... And I'm absolutely loving it! The more I hear them, the more I'm addicted to them! Thanks Pat 😁
For some reaction channels, you're right, they are just making faces and saying "woooooow" and "great song" & then telling their viewers to buy merch or to pay to watch exclusive videos. It's been so monetized and everyone with a camera can make these channels that the uniqueness of it has been diluted. I've been watching these types of videos for about 3 years now, I've seen a lot of them. This is my first time watching you and you have a good concept of what these videos should be 👍
THANK YOU for making this video. While I'm not a drummer, I've always been amazed by the amount of hate Mangini gets. Portnoy will always be my favorite drummer (and actually, my favorite musician as a whole), but MM's degree of technical skill is just INSANE. He doesn't wale on the drums and he isn't the showman MP is, but he can be extremely creative and he is flawless live.
That’s what it sounds like when you are on stage. I use to work at Radio City Music Hall and Madison a Square Garden and standing by the side the sound is horrible...yes your close to the band but not that great sound wise. Remember the real live mix is the front of house speakers to the audience. All you heard was the bands mix monitors not the the Live sound.
Awesome review! Look, we all love Portnoy, but once you see Mangini live, you realize he is one of the top drummers ever. And his chemistry is perfect for the band.
Best reaction video I've seen. Its not just full of 'oh shit dude, wow' like the rest of them, its very theoretical and insightful for a non drummer as to what is going on. Good stuff
Both Mikes have their own type of charisma. Portnoy was the rebel kid in the back row and Mangini was like the teachers pet. Portnoy definitely inspired me as a youth. Mangini has insane skills and he’s fighting upstream against prog snobs. I appreciate both their work.
I can not imagine other drummer with the mangini capacity. Musicality, Fastest, versatily, mathmatch, creativy, carismatic...the genius of the drummer of all time.
Marco Minnemann. Go watch The Aristocrats live if you get a chance. As a bonus you get Guthrie Govan...it's almost unfair how much talent in just a trio! But yeah...Marco and Mike are up there technically, and then you have Gavin Harrison who I put near the top creatively.
I'd also include Jaime Saint Merat in that group. Completely different genre (extreme metal), but he's in the same league in terms of technique and musicality.
Not the most in musicality : It's a Portnoy's field Not the fastest : George will laugh at him No way versatility : Again a Portnoy's field Creatively is a joke : Portnoy is joking at you.. Charismatic! Really! : Marco is laughing Even not most skilled even : I don't want to hurt you more
I first saw Mike back in 1994 with Extreme at Donnington Rock Festival (known now as Download I believe) and his drum solo was mind blowing. I had not heard anyone play polyrhythms, double bass, one handed rolls etc etc with that POWER and precision in all my young years. I keep an eye on his progress all the way though to Steve Vai's band and so forth to now finding the perfect band to play his phenomenal skills on. And I dare say, even in that band, he's at best being playing at half capacity. Notice how he doesn't SLAM his drums. So many of these prog metal drummers are BEATING SHIT out of their drums, he doesn't need to do that, I knows about efficiency of motion and control. What's more, he comes of as a genuinely lovely person. Mike is my hero!
Dude your concept is really good! Reaction are fun but I don't learn anything when watching it. You are pointing out really nice little things here and there I'm not overwhelmed by informations and stuff so keep it up dude! 😊 Cheers from France!
Great approach with not getting too technical. Having grown up with DT I naturally play with both Mike's in mind, and I naturally air drum in the car with everything set high so traffic and fans can see me look ridiculous. Lol
Who agrees that his drumkit sounds better than EVER in this video ? Dudes O can't stop watching this drum video bcz of them beautifully sounding toms and snare and kicks... I wish the album has this same tone
Dude as far as nearly every "whatever-reaction" vids I've watched (or typically no longer deign to watch), your down to earth style and your love for drums makes your vid very enjoyable. Most are BS clickbait thumbnail followed by vapid "reaction" with little info to offer. Good job!
Aw thanks! I personally don't like "react" videos; don't see the point in them! I started making these out of boredom when confinement started because I couldn't go to my studio and wanted to do more than just "react". So I'm glad you caught that and stoked that you enjoy them!
I've always thought Mangini was a better technical drummer than Portnoy (back when he was with Vai too). But I still prefer Portnoy's style, and how he helped shape the band compared to the Mangini iteration.
Yeah I found that the actual music took a turn for the worst, not all their songs but a lot are just okay. Now the playing abilities on the other hand only in definitively got more creative on the drumming side.
The problem with Portnoy's style is that he saturated it, releasing 7 recordings a year. For example, his famous hi-hat fills, it's cool, but every record has a ton of it. It's still cool to hear, but not as much as 15 years ago.
@@caelmcleish1212 I don't even necessarily agree with that. Portnoy is more than capable of playing those techniques, but he understands what actually sounds better. It's like, there are many drummers who practice technique and do all sorts of hard and weird stuff, but it sounds like this. You could play a super technical time signature switching groove that does all this crazy stuff, but it can still sound like shit. I hate to say it, but Virgil Donati is a perfect example; excellent technique, but he severely lacks taste in what actually comes out sounding good. Portnoy understood this balance of technique and sounding good.
Yeah there are like 10 go-to Portnoy fills that he even used with Avenged Sevenfold after DT. I feel like he peaked on Train of Thought... I got over DT after Octavarium and never really listened to the Mangini stuff, but this last one I really liked.
Thanks for share this great drummer. I think there is a lot of Mike mangini in the last dream theater album. He has a really sense of music in his sound. No only rhythm
I watched this concert!! From the 1st line, really close to the band!! When they played The Spirit Carries On, a woman beside me was thrilled, crying a little, so Mike saw and threw a bottle of water to her... really cool haha
Loved the reaction and the commentary especially when you said that you're in the middle. No too much technical but not just making faces either. I started learning drums myself this year so this is so helpful for me to digest. I liked your reaction to Pneuma too but I wouldn't say hated rather disliked that you talked while the video was playing. Since that was your first video it is understandable so I knew you would take care of that in the next and you did. Great work! I guess you'll be getting plenty of song requests (Gavin Harrison - Anesthetize) but I would love to see your reaction to a Mario Duplantier solo - Minotaur. You'll probably get a lot of Gojira songs too. That guy's a beast! Anyways, keep it up! Cheers.
Really enjoy your videos bro! I like them because you know more about drums than I do so I learn, but you don't overdo it so I can still understand. Subscribed.
I love Dream Theater, and familiar with their propensity for odd time signatures, but when you said, "It feels like 4:4, but then it's got this extra kick. This is actually 19:16" I just lost it. Couldn't stop laughing. Of course it is... why not!? lol
Pat, I've watched a fair number of 'reaction' clips on RU-vid and I have to say, yours is fantastic. In the true spirit of a reaction, we're seeing you, an actual musician, give honest and interesting appraisal on another musician. I can tell that you're not just artificially looking for something to watch in order to justify an upload, you're adding value to the rest of us. I'm a guitarist, not a drummer and yet the fact that I've come away from this video of yours knowing more and being entertained is fantastic.
Yeah, I was initially devastated when I learned that Portnoy had quit DT, but I quickly absorbed what Mangini brought to the band. I still love Portnoy, and as a drummer, learned tons of technique from him. Now, I whole-heartedly embrace Mangini and what he has brought to DT, and I am learning new drumming ideas as well.
I was lucky enough to see Mike with dream theater a few years back in Australia. Have a look at Dan Presland from Ne Obliviscaris "And Plague flowers the kaleidoscope" The man had calves of steel. Cheers
It is interesting to see that he holds his stick at the best fulcrum point instead of the end of the stick to achieve great single handed 16th strokes.
Great reaction! 🤘the drumming on this track it's just amazing. I find very entertaining seeing Nightwish's drummer Kai Hahto live drum videos. Weak fantasy drum cam video for example, just pure fun. You should give it a listen!
Haven’t seen DT live with Mangini behind the kit yet. Looking forward to checking that off my list as soon as things get back to normal and they come to Montreal
Pat Flanigan I think you know this but Labrie’s voice is really iffy live now a days. Obviously he is not as good as he used to be but still they put on a great show. It’s really cool seeing them play that stuff live. Also a great video if you want to watch is called technical difficulty Paralyzed St Paul 2019. Rudess and Mangini just improvise for a bit which was really cool to see
Yeah let’s just say LaBrie has never been my favourite part of DT... One of my favourite shows ever of any band is DT Like at Budokan and some vocal parts on there are just painful!
Love the reaction and the commentary! I'm a drummer myself, I'm also doing air drumming while watching this like that's what a drummer always do everytime, I guess? Anyway, expecting more to watch from your channel, subscribed!
@@mr198221 There were a lot of strong contenders for the audition. Thomas Lang and Marco Minnemann, for example. Personally I don't think anyone can ever replace or recover the songwriting magic that Portnoy brought to Dream Theater, but Mangini really sits in as soon as you hear him play with the band.
@@vladimirlee5928 I disagree heavily that all of them could replace him. I mean sure, a lot of those guys can play the grooves and it would sound fine, but they don't have the variance that Dream Theater brings. It's hard to explain; they can play the time signatures and the grooves, but they don't play them differently, which is what Dream Theater is all about. Instead of a hi-hat, rid cymbal, snare and tom groove, he would do the same groove, but with a different mix that fits the song. There's a certain sound and honestly, I've always thought since the early 00s that Mangini was the only guy who could effectively replace him.
DUDE ..... finally some 1 who is not scared to say that he cant play what mangini does sometimes xD ... love ur vids man keep it simple and real love ur content : )
I mean he is pretty damn good. It's just that in the end I'm left feeling. Wow, "very precise" and not "wow, that was awesome dude I can't wait to hear it again"
It’s nice to see a commentator not hating on Mangini for not being Portnoy, both are really the upper echelon of drummers but Mangini is my choice hands down and it mostly falls to the little things like how he can keep time
Just to help if you're still trying to play the fast hand parts; he does not play just with his fingers. He uses and focuses on the larger muscle groups and says any movement in his fingers is a "derivative motion" from the larger muscle groups. Maybe you'd find it easier if you played around with different techniques. Great video, man :)
I’m not 100% certain but I saw an interview where Mangini mentions that lights, background tracks, sound effects, etc are all in sync thru a computer with the click track. When MP was in the band it was more old school, but now apparently it’s all timed and on click.
I am an American living in Germany.....Love DT and even made 3 road trips in the last 5 years to see them on back to back nights. He is a very active person I believe when the atmosphere in the Audience is positive. He was non existent with emotion on one night that was held in an outside venue in my city Mainz and then the next night I went to Stuttgart and he was rockin and rollin hard! My favorite musician of the group because I love his passion and demeanor for his efforts!!
4:07 Completely Wrong. Mangini plays the cymbals high because it's an isolation technique. It's for recording and for avoid interferences/ filtrations by other sounds of the drums.
FUN FACT: A lifelong sufferer of Hyperhidrosis, he developed his style of playing because of his need to constantly air his armpits. This "fact" brought to you by my cat.
