Paul had plenty of healing to do after the Beatles...his Scottish farm seemed to be the safe place he needed. I take this as a love song to Scotland, a song of gratitude and appreciation.
Several months ago, I watched another reactor's listening to "Mull of Kyntire". A commenter said, that he felt like Paul had written a very old Scottish folk song, in the 1970's!
I wish you can return to your farm as soon you as can, it'd be awesome! For the record, Paul McCartney actually suffered a lot after the Beatles, depression and alcohol was a daily boost, but soon after his wife Linda helped him to arise and he started to sing again, After Ram album he met Denny Lane, which was a friend since 60's, so he changed jis mood and he decided to deliver Wild Life album, a very light and beautiful album with an amazing voice, singing songs like Wild Life and Dear Friend toward his friend John Lennon.
I fell so much in love with this song, that a very long time ago, I went to Scotland, rented a car and drove to the Mull of Kintyre just to see it. It was beautiful and the most remote place I’ve ever been. Not a single sound except seagulls and bleating sheep. I’ll never forget it. I love Scotland.
Lee your face when the Campbeltown Pipe Band entered marching along the beach was awesome, i'm Scottish and a Beatles fan, this song was part of my childhood, it's not a dirge or a letdown, its an anthem and a beautiful litany to a lovely part of this planet.
Oh my, I'm deeply in love with this song, Mull of Kintyre became the 4th best selling single in UK history, they said that this song became most popular than the Porridge! Every Scotsman over the age of 30 bought it!!
McCartney was really nervous about it at the time, as it was the days of punk in the late 70's and he didn't think it would catch on - but he said he had punks coming up to him telling him how great it was. heh
It's my understanding that this song was huge in the UK but relatively unknown in the US. As far as I can remember, I never heard, or even heard OF, the song before I got Wings' Greatest Hits album.
Kintyre is a peninsula of Scotland. It is southwest of Glasgow, and Loch Lomond. Paul's ranch was there, where "the long and winding road" took to get him there, and back out again. At the end of Kintyre, on a clear day, one can see across to Northern Ireland. When I rented a car in 1990, and drove around the U.K. for two weeks, I drove down Kintyre, yet it was raining hard, and foggy in the region too -Scotland! I did not see N'Eire. I did have this song on a cassette to play then :)
He got into trouble for possession when he was up there. My mum's friend lived up there at the time and said all the locals knew there was plenty of dope and didn't give a ****. As far as they were concerned he was a nice man who sang nice songs and the police should have had better things to do with their time.
Everyone has a different perspective and taste in music. I much prefer most of Paul's solo work more than John's or George's or Ringo's (although I do like a lot of their stuff too and of course the Beatle's catalog is the best). This song is good for what it was meant to be--a tribute to a peaceful beautiful place where he recovered from the break up of the Beatles. The bagpiper's were a local band that he used in the video and they put out an album of their own as a result.
A McCartney song I wasn’t familiar with. It’s gently lulling, Paul’s voice is sweet and joyful. One of the most soothing songs I’ve ever heard. The bagpipes add magic. More McCartney magnificence. Thank you, Lee and Mark V!
This song always gives me chills. After a day tour to Isle of Skye last year, they played this on the tour bus going back to Inverness. I was already familiar with the song and this just topped off the day ❤🏴
Despite not being at ALL rock or pop this single was Wings' biggest hit in Britain and is one of the best selling singles of --all time-- in the UK, I imagine notably in Scotland.
I like this song, I don't care if people say it's cheesy 🙃. I like the Frog Song as well by the way, even though many fans hate it. My children loved it, the Frog Song and Yellow Submarine are a great way to introduce toddlers to McCartney and The Beatles.
Actually, it was a single only. It has been since added as a bonus track to London Town. Flip the single over and you get the rockin', funny...and horny side of Paul.
I took a holiday on Kintyre a few years back. Of course I had to visit Saddell Bay, the location of this video, if only to placate my McCartney mad nephew. I walked a little beyond the beach and was lucky enough to see an otter swimming in the disconcertingly rough sea just before a storm broke. A magical place and memorable song!
Number 1 song in New Zealand in early 1978. I remember it vividly being played every week on the Top 20 Countdown. Don't think it did any good in the US. The bagpipes in this are one of those few and far between goosebump moments. Glad you appreciated it.
Great reaction Lee!! This song has always made me smile (and to be honest, tear up sometimes) - it's such a beautiful piece and homage to a gorgeous place! I'm generally not a bagpipe lover (I liken the sound to strangling a cat) - but there are instances where it is THE perfect instrument! At a military tattoo, where a brass marching band and a pipe & drum band collaborate for Amazing Grace (chills & tears) (my dad is a trumpeter with a police marching band, so I've experienced this many times), and with this song! I can't think of a more appropriate use of the pipes! This came out the year I was born - but I remember, while very young, hearing it on the radio here in Ontario, Canada regularly. Such fond memories of it. Cheers!
I saw Paul perform this beautiful song in Toronto in 2010, and was lucky enough to be able to watch the pre-concert sound check when he rehearsed "Mull of Kintyre" with a local pipe and drum band - great experience.
Lee I really appreciate your eclectic choices of music to react to. You run the gamut from pop to acid rock & beyond. Most reactors do songs that millions have heard on commercials, radio, films etc. and claim they never heard the song before. Ten seconds into song and then they say "I know this". Spoiler alert-they reviewed the song before uploading the "reaction" video. You seem to be giving an honest reaction to songs I assume you never even knew existed let alone heard. Especially songs from the 60's by obscure artists who were never heard from again.💯💥👍
Hey, I visited the Mull of Kintyre recently. It's just 12 minutes from Ireland across the sea, and very beautiful. There was a lot of mist there, even when it was clear and bright everywhere else. I asked a local person if it was always misty there, and they seemed quite offended.
One of my dear old dad’s favourite songs (and he was an Englishman, not a Scot!). Always brings a tear of happiness to this old guys eye! :) Paul and Linda went to live on their property at the Mull of Kintyre after the Beatles broke up. They had very little money at this time as the Beatles wealth was tied up in court cases and litigation, but Paul always spoke very fondly of their very simple but enjoyable time there as a family after the craziness of Beatle-mania.
Paul became interested in Scotland after John Lennon had been telling him about his own family roots in Scotland and how beautiful it was. So, Paul decided to go there and take a look, he loved it and bought that property.

I would have started with "Band on the Run" or "Let Me Roll It" as the first Wings track, but "Mull of Kintyre" was a sweet little ballad, definitely. You REALLY need to hear "Let Me Roll It", as it has the most incendiary guitar riff McCartney ever did.
Paul&Wings: 1. BAND ON THE RUN (lots of transitions) 2. SILLY LOVE SONGS 3. LIVE AND LET DIE( theme to James Bond movie) 4. LET ME ROLL IT( deep base) 5.JET 6.UNCLE ALBERT/ADMIRAL HALSEY 7.MAYBE I’M AMAZED ( love song to Linda, lots of different sounds)
As a drummer have you ever seen the Secret Drum Corps (from Basel Switzerland ) they are the ultimate in drummers en mass, if not check them out, they are frequent participants in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
If you want to hit up more Wings' songs, two rockers, "Beware My Love" and "Soily" from the live album "Wings Over America", show off McCartney's incredible voice in his prime. His scream at the end of "Soily" is sick!
Not really off London Town. But it did appear as a bonus on a CD reissue in the '90s. Also... Jimmy McCullough and Joe English are *not* involved. Just Paul and Denny and the Campbelltown Pipe Band, recorded at Paul's farm in Kintyre, Scotland.
Loved Wings! The album from 1976, "Venus And Mars" is awesome. I would suggest listening to the first two songs together, as they feed into each other; "Venus and Mars/Rock Show". Gives you a great overall vibe and just makes you feel happy. 😊
Hearing "Listen To What The Man Said" and letting it fade into the song"Treat Her Gently - Lonely Old People" (also from "Venus and Mars") is also quite special. 😊
I never saw it in American concerts, but many Canadian show had actual bagpipes on stage (you can find live Canadian versions online) There are a lot of Scots in Canada and lots of bag pipers
My Friend - Wings will surprise you, very underrated, and have great diversity. You'll have fun! Here are some suggestions: Songs with guts - Soily, Beware My Love, Jr's Farm, Helen Wheels, Old Siam Sir, 1985, Venus & Mars/Rock Show, Spirits of Ancient Egypt (live Wings Over America), HI, HI, HI (live Wings Over America,), Morse Moose and the Grey Goose Songs with blues - Let Me Roll it, Letting Go, Call Me back Again, 1882 (live) Song with chill - Little Lamb Dragon Fly, Some People Never Know, Backseat of my Car, My Love
A lot of Celtic music has such power of beautiful melodies...check out Rod Stewart's version of "Sailing", a song by the Sutherland Brothers, another Scottish group...
SO many great Wings songs but may I suggest JET, ROCK SHOW, and/or JUNIOR'S FARM, three of the group's biggest rockers! Or maybe SEASIDE WOMAN, a Reggae pop song by LINDA McCartney and Wings (released under the fake band name, Suzy & the Red Stripes).
I bought the double A-side vinyl single of this song at that time and the other song "Girl School" is for me a little bit better. Mull of Kintyre was No. 1 on the single charts here in Germany, too.
nice comment, very to the point, it's the warm and home feeling that attract me in this song, it's one of my top3 wings song, my favourite is Mrs Vanderbilt, a stylish song, and another top3 is wildlife, though it' s unpopular opinion maybe haha
