Master of stealth, king of sabotage, and SAS legend, Paddy Mayne was a remarkable figure for the Allies during World War II. Feared admirably in North Africa, and admirably feared post-war by the locals at his home, he became one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the war through his daring feats of bravery and unorthodox tactics. He has been often compared to the most elite fighter aces, having himself blown to pieces up to a hundred Bf 109 fighters and Junker-Ju bombers before they could even lift off the ground. Known for his roguish boldness character, he continued to awe through his later war successes in Sicily, Italy and Germany.

One of the most interesting facts about Mayne is his prowess as an athlete. Before joining the military, Mayne was a champion rugby player and boxer, and his physical prowess and endurance would serve him well in his later military career. Mayne was also known for his daring and unconventional approach to warfare. He was known to launch surprise attacks on enemy positions and would often use unorthodox tactics to achieve his objectives. This made him a highly effective soldier, but it also earned him a reputation as a maverick who was difficult to control

In terms of leadership, we need more men like Paddy Mayne. Because at the end of the day, if he got the job done, the cavalier attitude is excusable. Sadly, this video also shows just how terrible a grip alcoholism can have on a person. I pray for all those who suffer from similar addictions.

Great documentary. It is a crime and shame on the British government and the higher powers that are in the upper echelons of the British Army that Paddy was not awarded the VC. He certainly deserved it due to heroism that he performed on numerous occasions. Former comrades of Paddy's were very hurt over this.

@@musashidanmcgrath You are speaking absolute nonsense. Paddy Mayne was Unionist/Loyalist by political persuasion and Protestant by religious faith. He was British by nationality. It is amazing the amount of ignorant comments that are on this site.

The reason he didn't get a VC is simple. At that time a VC citation had to be signed by a higher ranking officer. There usually weren't any about

Wow. When I was a kid, there was a TV show called the Rat Patrol. It was about a group of four allied soldiers who fought Rommel's Afrika Corp from two jeeps armed with .60 cal machine guns. It was cancelled because parents complained it was too violent. I now have to wonder if this was the inspiration for the show.

I knew a man, now sadly deceased, who was a driver in Paddy’s jeep. He had joined the regiment as he was formerly a poacher, and hence a good shot! He was from rural Dorset, and even knew Lawrence of Arabia as a child in the 1930’s. He asked Paddy what to do if they met a checkpoint, and I think the context was a friendly one, Paddy replied ‘shoot them’! The was no further discussion, and the comment I got was, ‘and he bloody would have too!’.
