Dry Pack Mortar for Shower: Tile Coach Episode 27

Watch me float a shower floor on a slab foundation with a kerdi-line drain. Some people call it "Dry Pack", some call it "Deck Mud", but basically it is the best way to build a base for a shower.
Using sand and cement and a little bit of water, the tile setter will create a mortar that is easier to screed, shape, and slope than traditional "wet" mortar or "fat mud". Watch the step by step process of creating the best shower base possible.

You are right about big guys and how we would approach floating this, I’m 6’3 I would set 1 screed at the back and float off the line drain do it all from outside the shower

First thing I do is pour a 1/2" of lever quick, makes for a perfect surface surface to build the drypack off of. Plus, dry pack bonds to it like a champ if you apply it while the level quick is still green.

I can’t agree with you more about the (pour the pan) !!! Anyone who says that isn’t a tile guy or doesn’t know any better. I call it pack the shower base. By the way I am more of a foam guy since I am half way to a wheel chair,but I do mud when needed. Comedy show there in this video !

Over here in New England a lot of guys call it "pouring" a pan. I was raised calling it "packing" a pan. Everytime I do one I say never again! I'm switching to foam! I'm sure it makes it easier when you have a helper though

Nice work Isaac! I like the attention to detail! I overheard you mention floating a wall for a video idea. You should do it. I still do when needed, ie out of plumb walls. I don't believe in wet shimming or spending the time to add a bunch of strapping.

I never could understand the purpose of using dry pack as opposed to a mixture that is just a little more wet. I don't trust it to set up completely. I "poured" a shower pan that is 4'x7' on an above grade concrete slab with a sticky mix. I used red guard water proofing, tiled it and it has never leaked. It's been 12 yrs.

Third generation pure blood dago tile setter here. Learned the trade over 35 years ago. Passed down by my father and grandfather. Here in Michigan I dry pack most all my floors. We call it "pulling mud" and "pulling screeds". Still the best most solid level floors going! Nice job Isaac...great work!
@thenorthshore6472
@thenorthshore6472 5 лет назад
Isaac Ostrom when I started we'd use the old oil soaked 'rib' lath (don't think it's made anymore) and scratch coat wall mud. (40lb bag of lime, 94 lb bag of Portland and 35 shovels of sharp sand) we'd then level the walls with a second coat using 'screed sticks' leveled with a screed of wall mud, with a pinch of baking soda. The baking soda set it up almost instantly so it'd harden to 'pull' off of. I still have one old builder who has me do it this way. Sometimes well pull wall mud over drywall where the scratch coat isn't needed. The rib lath method went over tarpaper and bare studs. I'll also do Durock, Hardie, Wonderboard and the others but still kinda set in my ways. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Lol But I dig the new methods. Definitely time savers!
@thenorthshore6472
@thenorthshore6472 5 лет назад
Isaac Ostrom galvanized diamond lath today but years ago a thicker oil soaked rib lath was common. It was more rigid and held up better for the scratch coat. Haven't seen it sold in years though.

We tore out a shower pan a few years ago that must have been poured with concrete instead of deck mud over the rubber Oaty liner. After a few years it had wicked up the walls and started to destroy the framing. The single door opening swelled so bad the door would drag and the curb was cracked. What a mess in this beautiful home.

The only critique I'll give is regarding the denzshield. Ga Pacific requires a minimum of 1/8 in above the finished pan. That's their instructions and it voids the warranty if not done that way. It's gypsum(drywall) with a waterproof coating on the face. If water collects at the bottom of the board it WILL wick up the wall. I'm rebuilding a shower right now because mold was growing on the adjacent b/r wall. After a month of no use, I could form the denzshield into a ball, like wet clay. I never use that product. Even with cement backer, I leave a small gap. If done right, liquid membranes are an added benefit but if it fails, the shower is still fine. The floor looks good for sure
@tonyh9970
@tonyh9970 4 года назад
@@TileCoach I get that, in theory, it won't leak but if the membrane fails the shower fails. I would think that if everything was installed properly then if the membrane fails, the shower would still work as it's supposed to. I just watched your video on the 8000 sq ft grocery store. It failed due to a gypsum based product getting wet. I get that the floor wasn't "sealed" but it shows that all products have the potential to fail. I think that you do a great job but I also think that those details matter. I wish you all the best and stay safe out there.

Now that is some pretty mud brother. Nice fine sand and an almost fluffy consistency out of the bucket. Some of the bagged shit is like pulling pea gravel. Are you exclusively using kerdi now? I like the sheet membranes well enough but can't get passed the thought that scratching out a bleeder on the pan could cause a leak.

won't water pool at the corners where the drain sits? They can't really be angled towards the drain either because that would make the tile sit crooked? Or do you slope that at about an inch also and just deal with the tile looking angled?
