@@rockraphlegal I used to have a French car which I loved, mainly because it was a Williams Clio not quite so stylish as most French cars but it was a fantastic drive.
I ride this beauty about 10 months now. Since several major software updates, voice commands and the DS Smart Touch are working way better (especially the writing feature)! Also the infotainment system works more responsive, faster and less laggy. Chapeau DS Automobiles! Very happy with this car! I have the DS4 Performance Line+ PureTech 130 Automatic in Platinum Grey. Comfort & design are the trumph cards of DS! In the future I'll keep driving DS. My dad always drove Citroën cars and still doing that today. I prefer comfort over sport. I don't have the DS Active Scan Suspension, but it still offers an amazing comfortable ride. The seats are also amazingly comfortable as well.
@@theweeknd2725 The germans are overpriced and too ubiquitous. This car is at least very close to the germans in the most importnat things you want from a car, and just beats the f out of them in terms of design and uniqueness.
@@theweeknd2725 most who driving Germans switching towards french cars...... they do stuff very differently when it comes to options and ride quality..... what you get in German cars that are not standard, you get in this DS4 as standard for sure while paying less ;)
Better than its German counterparts. Look at that car... a thing of absolute beauty. Been driving BMW for 27 years and my wife wasn't keen when I told her about DS.... but she went with me to try it... and in less than 5 minutes she told me : "that's one we need... it's so beautiful". Ordered the Performance Line, Pearl White, Black roof. I am telling you : that DS4 is fabulous and even superior to any product that class from BWM, Audi and Mercedes Benz. Greetings from Germany.
Absolutely not. BMW 2 series handles better than DS cars. Handling isn't even comparable. I've rented both cars. I drive 2003 XC90. I needed car for vacation BMW 218i was so much better. Any German car handles better. This isn't bad, just not that level. If you come from 1990 BMW and say DS4 better than 90' bmw, lol. rent BMW, test it. Feel it. Opel Grandland & Crossland has way better downforce too. You're justifying your choice with bs logic.
@@supernotnaturalreading this means you talk about sport type like cars. DS is all about delivering comfort instead of sport-driving experience........ Not everyone is keen on sporty driving.......
@@betrenthmouze6336 Nope, DS4 is in a class with those cars. Not every BMW car is meant to be for sport lol. You compare apples to apples. DS 4 came as "France's answer to BMW's 1 series". It has the basically same price tag. So you are saying, DS 4 shouldn't be compared meanwhile it's existence was just to compete Germans? What an absolutely dumb logic. If you think DS series do offer more comfort and BMW does give that away, you're in delusion. Reviews do tell how its poor handling or hars roads. It looks premium, but material isnot up to its pars. A series of Merc, BMW 1 series, Audi A3. vs this. same segment.
DS is so underrated, some of their cars are fun, stylish, luxurious and functional - they may not all tick all four of those boxes but they're all darn special
First of all, I just want to say the presenter is spot on and have come across him on a number of reviews before and he gives a straightforward view of what he is testing, unlike the majority of other people doing this who are just lemmings, saying the same stuff with the same terminology as each other, So after the review, I have decided to book a test drive based on Rory's clear and concise accout. Thanks
Love your play on resent / recent I too resent him for getting to drive all these cars , still haven’t forgiven him for turning Top Gear into Blue Peter .
I had different personal experience to own French, Italian, Japanese, German & US cars, I loved so much the French cars I possessed, I prefer personally French cars than other manufactures. they're underestimated in general. French cars are pretty, reliable, comfy & cheap cars if well-maintained.
I have a lot of love for the DS brand and its designs - they’re definitely enthusiast cars for people who like their car to stand out. Not sure how great that is for overall sales, but it is very, very cool.
Who designs a system to turn the navigation off to then press 200 buttons looking away from the road for 10 minutes to put the heating up 1 degree!!. Automotive progress my a*se.
@Andrew yep me too, but if they font want to.put physical.buttons in the cars ( to save money ) I'd rather not have to scroll through menus on a touch screen whilst driving just to turn the heating up or put blower on to clear the windscreen so voice would be better than touch screen at least ... I do get the voice control is intrusive and annoying though, I hate Alexa lol.
Took a look around the Edinburgh DS 'salon' last weekend. The DS4 looks amazing on screen but is something else close up - as an 80s kid it was like sitting in a Delorean AND being in the future. I like the old DS models, they were futuristic too, but this a step up again.
You are so right to have a rant about the tech, Rory. Car control ergonomics are going back to the 1960s when you had to play hunt the thimble to find any controls (good job that there weren't many then - indicators, lights and heater if you were lucky!). The safety implications of being distracted while trying to perform simple tasks is something that the industry and regulatory authorities need to get a grip on. Apart from that - this looks like a desirable DS at last - I'll bet the Stellantis team who finished off the Tonale wished they had done this instead!
@@mirkozlikovski9553 The whole PSA group has have only 3 platforms since 1990s. This thing is based on the PF1 platform which as I said it's same with Peugeot 206 and Citroen Saxo from late 1990s. (The CMP platform is basically PF1 platform with slight differences specially for hybrid and EV cars)
@@amir1836 FAIL, again... and it looks like you also "stayed in 1990s", because PSA now have only two platforms: EMP2 (presented in Jan. 2013) that replaced C segment PF2 and D segment PF3 platforms (first production vehicle on it was C4 Picasso II), and CMP platform, that replaced PF1 platform for A an B segment cars which - due to the GM and Chinese partnerships turnovers and construction changes - took a bit longer (in 2018 instead of 2014) to be presented . and got a new name in the process... CMP instead of EMP1 (first production vehicle on it was DS 3 Crossback)! in the near future PSA, now Stellantis, will have (additional?) 4 platforms known under the name "Stella".... STLAsmall, STLAmedium, STLAlarge and STLAframe, for pure electric vehicles. and these are simple facts that you can -(even if PSA cars doesn't interest you to the point of knowing them from the data of their vehicles) simply google before you post dumb conclusions based on outdated and misinterpreted data... ;)

Great info on there as well, please keep up the great intertainmen, love your videos!!!
I had one of the first DS3 cars. Loved it. Looked great. May be tempted for this ds4. I have a jag xf diesel and its appalling. Not as entertaining and good looking as a DS
Great review. Love the looks, but even on top specs you don't get basics you would expect for the price like heated front seats and blind spot monitoring. Self charging hybrid option would also be a nice addition from Stellantis. They're missing a big market who can't go PHEV.³
Oh please tell us how much more you have to pay for such "basics" on its german rivals, please.... A fully specced DS4 costs considerably less money, plus it gets nightvision too, that none of them have....
That touch pad in the lower middle would be great for right handed people in countries that drive on the right hand side of the road. For people in the UK, if you're not left handed it's going to be an added hassle. But I agree about having easy to access buttons or switches for often used things and the heating/fan speed is one of those things.
Good review! Unfortunately, I also have bad experiences with Citroens infotainment system. Such a shame auto makers aren’t able to sort out a good user interface that strikes the right balance between screen and knobs
Overall an okay review with beautiful images. You just haven't studied the infotainment system enough. The whole system can be customized to your liking, just like widgets on a Smartphone. This way you can perfectly have a screen completely about climate control and you do not have to switch between different shortcuts. Even the on-board computer and head-up display are adjustable. In this way it comes across that you are not satisfied with the system, but it is also not set up to your liking. By the way, they were 20 inch rims!
Absolutely brilliant review. And what a great car! On looks alone, rivals shown at 2.20 pale in comparison. The DS4 Performance Line version is a babe magnet.
I love the looks of this car and what's it's all about: comfort, style, efficiency. I don't mind the relative lack of performance, no longer a priority for me these days. Kind of done with sportish hard sprung cars. Nice watch, mate. You're a man of style. I've got a YM myself.
@@Nexus.Achiles where did you get that negative vibe from? Are you able to read my mind??? It was just a funny statement. Your reaction says more about you than about me honestly.
It's not the manufacturer making the numbers up its the test the car goes through... I think the average speed during the test is 9mph and it also gets 60 seconds to accelerate to 30mph. It's a very silly test.
@@phuketexplorer all the cars have to go through the same test. And the manufacturer doesn't set the rules. It also measures C02 thats why some manufacturers were able to cheat such as VW. This car is designed to pass a test. It can run battery only for a large part of the test. Hence the high mpg and low C02. There not made up! Manipulated is closer to the truth.
Beautifully designed interior and exterior. Lexus should send their designers on a 3-day course in the classroom of DS and Polestar. Sadly, the experience ruined by mindless silly outbreak of screens! Why do manufacturers do this! Keep fan, vent, heating and stereo volume & tune controls manual. Always, always.
ALWAYS!!!!!!! I really can’t stand them, my shed on wheels Is on its last legs and I’ll have to get something with screens everywhere soon. I’m dreading it.
@@andymoss4285 Screens and all those hidden functions are a total disgrace and a dangerous distraction. Plus you can't operate them with gloves on. I think regulators should step in and force them to keep vital ops like fan, vent, heat, tune, vol, on buttons/rotary switches.
@Konstantin Ridaya beauty is in the eye of the beholder and besides the LC Lexus makes the most boring looking luxury vehicles on the road😩😀 some of them don’t even look “luxury”
@Konstantin Ridaya The original IS-200 and the LC-500 are certainly very beautiful cars. But all the rest are just vomit-inducing design. Compare that to the cars from Afla Romeo, for example. Lexus really need to drop that awful grille and they need a new designer for their exterior designs.
Am a UX designer. After so much effort with the gorgeous overall design language, how could they screw up with the interior controls? DS, please reach out, I'll be delighted to help on any future revision.
Good question. I wonder if they used an interface designer at all. The lack of physical controls for frequently used functions such heater adjustments makes we wonder what their design task mapping looked like. Did they do any user interface design testing with humans ??
I still have my old ds3 and I love the look and the quirks of the ds ranges. Criterion have always done something different does it always work no but are they boring not at all.
It was all looking good until we got to the infotainment system and controls. The manufacturers are repeatedly putting strange controls that are bad to use. Why is the AC hidden in the screen awkwardly when there’s buttons already? Why are there 2 different controls for each air vent!?!
Perfect review, thanks Rory nice details, especially now that the EU has set a 2035 deadline for petrol car manufacturers. We need to start understanding more and more of those hybrid/electric cars in our daily lifes
@@JayDee-b5u Well they're more likely to stick to it than other manufacturers. They're relatively new and getting rid of existing models won't be as difficult. In fact, it would probably be better for DS from a financial perspective. Newer companies are more successful when they're electric, and they don't need to compete with the German ICE vehicles that dominate the segment.
@@DSAutomobilesUK Wow that is a changing point in Automotives, I hope the company will also bare in mind the customer affordability especially in developing countries and offer low cost hybrid/electric models. As more inflation rises and financial debt crisis are expected to hype, cheaper electric models are a vital tool for company survival
@@JayDee-b5u Says Jay Dee in the week where filling up the average car hit the £100 barrier for the first time ever. IC engines are over. The UK has banned the sale of new cars with IC engines from 2030, 8 short years away from now so there's no point manufacturers spending billions developing a new IC engine that they can only sell for 4 or 5 years. They wont make a return on combustion engines. Electric is here and the focus should be on countries generating more power from renewables.
@@DSAutomobilesUK I know touchscreens and so forth are cheaper but interior buttons are an opportunity for a point of differentiation (Bentley organ stops for example). In the future where cars become more and more homogenized this differentiation is going to become more and more important. Also any cars which requires a touchscreen to change major controls like HVAC and volume is an instant do not buy for me; it tells me the designers were lazy, the finance team was a bit too involved and it's also far less safer than physical controls that you can feel for without taking your eyes off the road (and no, I don't want to use voice control; if I'm listening to a podcast I have to pause the podcast, pause my train of thought, spend a few seconds talking to the car then hope that it does what I asked. Pushing a button or turning a dial literally takes a second and comes without the added annoyances I just described).
ALSO DS 4 PRICE RISE of 40 K PLUS put the rivoli ,performance line (cross or non cross ) and another fancy named one, into the £570 per annum ROAD TAX for next , so thats another 2 grand to pay on top of standard 170.00 till end of 5th year. I think now the E in the name is for EXPENSIVE LOL but i do admire the squashed suv styled body.
14:00 "Hybrid must be charged to deliver it's maximum efficiency" This sounds very questionable to me. You break - and that energy goes into a battery in a hybrid. Also, even in hybrid mode the engine supplies a bit of power to the battery and the software decides what's the optimal gear. So, one minute you may be driving with engine in lower gear that does driving and charging but when you press your foot down, the car can accelerate without changing the gear.
Not sure if anyone else noticed, but there's some significant difference in the shade of the paint on those bumpers compared to the rest of the car. And now that i told you, you can't unsee it.
I finally surpassed the factory listed 22.2 km pr litre of 95 my Twingo 1.2 75hp 16v was listed with. B roads, flooring It when going downhill and crawling to the red light. Its all about driving style.
Great review. £40,000 that’s what I paid for my Range Rover. I know it’s not a hybrid but I won’t be changing any time soon. Has Land Rover said what they have planned regarding going electric ?
Always liked french car design but some of the design and control elements are so convoluted. Like they got halfway to refining it and then went ‘that’ll do’
Stellantis needs to partner Chrysler and DS. Sell DS cars in North America as Chryslers. It allows DS to expand without spending a fortune on marketing, and gives Chrysler new products to sell
Lovely looking car Rory but I have to agree with do much of the comments of price and especially range. Now I am not a mathematician but assuming the tank holds 55 ltr which is 12 gallons and they say you can get 230 miles per gallon , then once you have run 38 miles on battery you can then run for 2722 miles on the tank of petrol, , do they think we are all stupid
I hear ya. The WLTP test is 23.25 miles in length. All European cars' economy figures are measured within that set distance, not by the distance their entire tanks will last.
Vert nice looking cars. the unedcated car snobs will be out in force again. He also wrong about the infotainment you dont lose your sat nav and you can transfers it to your dash screen. One of the shortcut buttons is for heating and fans so you just select that and it has all controls on screen. Reselecting satnav does not lose anything.
I have a DS3 crossback. Additionally you can't use Citroën dealers for services so make sure there is a dealer near you. My car been off the road for 4 months since March 2021 not for big issues but issues they can't fix due to supply chain issues etc. When it's running right lovely cars to drive but those little things in tech are a pain and slowly eat away at you....
