Maybe- the 7.3 wasn't bad at all, can be modded to 300+ easily. Wieghs about 675- 700 lbs..the 466 wieghs 1150, barely fits with custom installation, makes 190-230 HP stock, can be modded too to over 300 HP.. Not seeing why its worth it to swap unless you've got a bad 7.3 and a cheap 466 and a shop full of tools..
Dude this is going to be one rock solid bulletproof truck when you're done the DT 466 very very strong I think it's the best motor from international that motor dont break
DT 466 engines were reliable from the factory because they didn’t make enough power to pull a greasy string out of a cat’s ass. We used to have a small fleet of them in Freightshakers and if the highway has a 1% grade you were downshifting to try to keep highway speed up. That’s not saying they cannot be modified to make power but their great reliability reputation came about because it was a beefy built engine producing small power numbers.
So Happy it's not a Cummins Swap. That Cage in that T-Bird Oh my God. How would that even PASS Tech Inspection. I'm a Big Fan of those T-Bird's You said it's a 1986 Might be but it Definitely has a 87-88 Nose on it. I actually want to build a 87-88 TURBO Coupe T-Bird, they got the Mean front nose, that's what Bob Glidden Ran in 1987 and 1988. I gotta Low 9 Second 86 Mustang with a 521 Stroked BBF always wanted to Swap out my Drivetrain and Engine into a 87-88 Turbo Coupe.
I have a DT466C and a Superduty and would love to do something like this but need to shorten up the front accessory drive and probably put a P pump on in place of my MW pump.
I've been wanting to do this build for a couple years now. The transmission I want to go with would be an Eaton 10 speed. The idea I had for the intercooler is to use a liquid to air intercooler out of a 6.7 powerstroke.
We went with the Allison for the trans so we didn’t have to run a divorced transfercase. We want electronic 4x4 to still function like factory. The Eaton 10 speed is huge and might be tough to fit in the tunnel but would certainly be fun to drive.
I want to go mechanical on everything so that's why I was thinking about the Eaton 10 speed. I know the fitment would be a lot more work. If it ends up looking like too much work or too many complications I'll probably go with a ZF6. I really want it to be a manual.
Im doing a dt360 with allison 1000 for my 94 crew cab ford with 06 supeduty axle swap. I need info on what to use for torque converter and flywheel. I know that the allison 2000 bellhousing will work so I've already got that. Anything is appreciated thanks and nice build guys
Subbed! Looking forward to the 466 build. I've heard great things about the platform and not many ppl tackle this swap. I'm looking for a dt360 for my k30.
@@elliiottbrumley98 the frame is completely modified. We used an Allison transmission and a Ford transfercase. If you look back at my older videos I go over all of that stuff for you.
Too large/heavy and although the torque numbers are extremely high the horsepower number is low. Horsepower numbers are what sell trucks unfortunately.
We are using heavy duty springs from SDtrucksprings.com but a full dressed 6.0 weighs about 1,100 lbs. People regularly put snow plows on the front of these trucks that weight 800+ lbs and that weight is forward of the axle. Some of this extra weight from the motor will be rearward of the front axle. The truck right now only sits 1/2” lower than it did with the 6.0 and we still have not upgraded the springs.
I have a 91 super duty with a 7.3 idi in it. I measured my dt466 and my 7.3idi and no way the dt466 is going to fit. Lengthwise yes but the oil pan would be dragging on the ground.
Dt466 is one of the best diesel engines ever built. However if i swapped a powerstroke out it would be for a bf8l513 deutz. There is no other diesel on the planet that is more reliable than deutz aircooled
How much of the firewall did you end up trimming? Did you have to move a lot under the dash? I'm really interested in this build, I'd go the dt360 route but I cant find one close or at a decent price.
We didn't have to trim any firewall. We will be starting back on this project real soon and ill make sure to touch upon the small area we had to massage to get it to fit.
dodge cheated by putting a medium duty engine in a light duty pick up. Ford should have done the same with the DT 466/530. For vgt will it be ran a fleece vgt controller ?
If we end up with a vgt we plan to use the driver in the factory PCM to control the turbo. The 466 unfortunately is way to big to come factory in the truck a smaller version like the dt360 would be much better
The 7.3PSD or T444E is a medium duty engine. HEUI was a co-development between Navistar and Cat. The 3126 is also HEUI and may even fit better then a DT466.
@@InTheShop look into lil'black box vgt controller, its a standalone controller to use with holset vgt's. It has a Bluetooth capability to tune with a phone app. If you use a he351ve with upgrading to 67-70 that should supply plenty of air, you will also get a great working exhaust brake. The controller is 400-500$ and or its all open source and based of Aridinu so if you want to build your own its all there. It works awesome!!!
I been known for wretched excess . . . but this is a little too much. A 1480 lbs engine in the nose of a SuperDuty . . . WOW. Maybe if that beast were a 4 banger. That's just too much weight for not much else. It makes for an interesting xperiment.👌🏻 I'll keep watching. 👍🏻
The stock 6.0 weighs in at just over 950lbs. The way we looked at it is a 9ft fisher plow that most people hang off the front of these trucks is 900lbs. Realistically the front of the truck will still be 4-500lbs lighter than a stock 6.0 truck with a plow on it. Is the dt466 excessive?... absolutely lol. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing
The plan is to do all of the fab work then disassemble, overhaul, and paint everything. We took a temporary break from the truck but will be starting back on it in the next month or two.
In The Shop awesome. We don’t have a dt466 where I work but we have the similar kodiak engines. They are wicked powerful slow with out doing upgrades but beastly.
@@InTheShop Awesome man! I've seen a lot of DT466 projects started but they don't really get off the ground lol. Looks like you're almost there! Looking forward to it.
@@InTheShop too weak for my usage. They never had enough power/torque to tear anything up is why everyone likes em. Mainly because people dont pay attention to egt and lug a diesel engine. If the egt is getting hot downshift and let er rip.
Everybody like the concept but what about the enormous weight difference? The truck would need different suspension in front and still be comparably light in the rear. Seems like it would handle poorly.
The engine is about 300lbs heavier than the 6.0. 300lbs is negligible compared to the weight you would add if you put a plow on the front of the truck. With stock springs ride height is very close to factory. With f550 front springs the truck will ride perfect. Being a dual rear wheel truck I’m not really worried about the rear end being too light.
@@InTheShop I came up with 460 pounds. Being a 550 dually will probably make it work. As far as the plow goes, I know they are heavy but people don't normally commute with a plow truck. All I know is that my standard cab f350 7.3l wouldn't work well with the dt466. It already spins out in gravel because it's so front heavy. I will be excited to see how your truck turns out.
I understand what you are saying. An 8.5 ft Fisher V- plow weighs 899lbs off the truck. That’s besides another 40 or so lbs for push plates. The truck absolutely will not handle like it used to but it will be fine and the weight difference will barely be noticed.
@@InTheShop well, like I said. It's a good swap. I will be looking to see the finished product. I got a 1977 GMC 2 ton. I plan to put a DT466 in there.
In The Shop I’ve been wonting to do that swap for 3 years now, just wonting to see ur fabrication so I can kinda copy it. I love my 7.3l but its way to much money just to get it to 600hp.
It depends on what your goal is. A ZF6 is probably your best bet if you were leaving the engine stock but I don't think it will hold up very long if you start to turn the fuel up. Something like an Eaton 6 speed would hold up the best but would definitely require some trans tunnel modifications.
I still have it. I plan to do another video with it real soon! I have been tied up this month but will be back to posting weekly videos after Christmas.
@@InTheShop just wondering cuz I have an MDX and i I am interested in finding out what the possibilities for it are. Thank's bro. Looking forward to your updates.
Yup. When I closed my shop last year I got rid of the thunderbird project unfortunately. A 6.0 has the same bellhousing pattern as a modular ford motor like the 5.4 and 6.8 v10. If you get a 4r100 from a gas Superduty they bolt right up.
