We are going to give an honest rider's review of these two motorcycles after a full day's ride on the very twisty Duffy Lake Road. The 2005 Ducati 999R is a limited production collector's superbike while the Aprilia Tuono 1100 V4 is a super-naked with all the electronics of a modern motorcycle. Which one is the better bike? Which one will fit your riding style? We answer that in this video!

You didn’t address the heat coming off the Ducati. I had a 2006, 999, and I had to sell it. Well, really I traded it for a Bimota DB 5S, a bike with the air cooled 1000 engine.

That is definitely a consideration. Thanks for bringing it up

In a roundabout way, the Tuono exists because of Ducatis like the 999. The twins were the bikes to have (Honda and Ducati) in the early 2000's in superbike racing. The 999 totally dominated WSBK after its debut until fours were also allowed 1000cc, by that time a 750cc four was basically hopeless. Aprilia had a good V-twin in the Mille but never quite got there in WSBK and they needed something different, competing against Ducati with a twin was probably a loser's game. Fast forward to 06/07 timeframe, Aprilia started the RSV4 which came out in 2009 and won WSBK in 2010, 2012, 2014. The V4 Tuono, like the twin version that came before it, was a naked-ish RSV4 with more comfortable position. IMO yours is the best V4 version. I personally like the older looks of the front end on '16-20, you have the bigger engine, and the standard Tuono actually has a usable back seat unlike the RSV4 or Tuono Factory. I have a standard 999 I bought new, and of all the bikes I own it is probably in my top two favorites to ride. Not the newest, fastest, not the best-looking or sounding, not the most comfortable, but a nice middle ground on everything. It also has my favorite seating position "in" the bike rather than perched high on it, and the gauges are still my favorite even compared to the latest TFT. Just what you need easy to read and nothing more.

Thanks for a great perspective. Yes, I would agree that Tuono was created for those that craved superbike performance but sport touring comfort. I'm definitely one of those.

wow, that's a bit of a reach. To write that comment and actually believe it? Tuono exists because of the ducati (in a roundabout way.....)? By that logic you could say the Ducati 999 exists because of the Japanese 750 I4's because anything smaller wouldn't be competitive. Or Ducati copied the v4 design from aprilia in a roundabout way. Do you think to not "exist because of Ducati" aprilia should have have developed a v2? Or an I4? So because both aprilia and Ducati don't use the V2 to race do they both exist becuse of the Japanese? Tell me what aprilia should have developed to not "exist because of Ducati"? If you ask me a v4 couldn't be more different from the Japanese or Ducati at the time. It's amazing how people will try to twist things based on their bike preferences........ Sorry man, I like both brands but reaching for some emotional tug string to make the bike you prefer seem like the original or superior is ridiculous. I'm just trying to keep it real for noobs that read this and might believe it like so much BS on the youtube.

@@zoomvidsjc1 Dude you need to chill. The Ducati twins DID exist in liter displacement precisely as you said, the 750 fours vs 1000 twin results in parity on paper. Twins had a weight break for a time (AMA at least) but it was clear in the early 90's that they didn't need it. The 999 was a result of the rules agreed by the manufacturers and the FIM since 1988. Ducati did a great job for 30 years with the twins and moved the game on for WSBK. Never had an RSV4 but IMO it remains more desirable than the V4 Panigale, and the Tuono more desirable than the V4 Streetfighter. If you look at the RSV4 and how little it really has changed in the past 14 years, it shows just how right Aprilia got the design out of the box. Team protests were threatened in WSBK (2010) because others claimed it was basically a production MotoGP bike, and when the CRT era in MotoGP was going on with the "ART" RSV4 bikes (at least as good as customer Ducati prototypes those years), there was grumbling that the ART machines were really just superbikes. I think the RSV4 is the only bike to have that distinction, both series' rivals claimed the bike was not in the spirit of the rules. I had a Mille and thought it was great, sold it with 55,000 miles. And yes the RSV and the RC51 were made because Ducati was so successful in WSBK, good luck arguing that.
