I think Barks' inpiration is not Lord Of The Rings directly, since Fellowship only came out in 1954, and this book is from 1952. But his influence is probably the same as Tolkien's, Wagner's retelling of the norse mythology: The Ring Of The Nibelung. You guys could check out P. Craig Russell's adaptation of Nibelung, is phenomenal.

Gil Kane made a great adaptation, as well. I do think Russell has a more classic, almost dreamlike look, though--which is perfect for myths.

Carl Barks was the master. I grew up with my Mom's Disney comics from the 70s. However my personal Bible as a child was "The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck" by Don Rosa. That collection was magical.

Both Carl Barks and Don Rosa are amazing, I was raised with Carl (I have a collection of every story of his, because a newspaper like 9-7 years ago published everything) and Don (though I haven't read close to enough of Don's stories), so I absolutely love them.

In January 2006, the Danish Ministry of Culture published a canon of works significant to Danish culture. " This story, The Golden Helmet" - the only item in the entire canon not of Danish origin - was included on the list of children's culture items, alongside LEGO building blocks.

Prince Valiant travelled to North America to rescue Aleta who had been kidnapped by Vikings from Thule in 1947-48. The Golden Helmet is from 1952.

Ever notice how there are no fathers and sons in the ducks comics? Only uncles and nephews? There's a really cool essay/book from 1971 that dives into this and more called "How to Read Donald Duck". It's a bestseller in South America, and considered a seminal work in cultural studies, kinda dry, but worth a peek for duck fans!

I was just in Sweden, and I was amazed to find Donald Duck (a.k.a. Anders And) comics everywhere! Insanely popular in Scandinavia. They reprint Barks in a "classics" monthly series.

@@lobsterharmony "Anders And" is the weekly magazine in Denmark, "Kalle Anka & C:o" is in Sweden and "Aku Ankka" is in Finland. The weekly Norwegian magazine is called "Donald Duck & Co" and the Dutch one just "Donald Duck". These comics are also popular in Germany ("Micky Maus"), France ("Le Journal de Mickey" and "Picsou Magazine"), Italy (the weekly "Topolino" magazine with 3.500 issues has new italian stories every week) and Greece (weekly "Μίκυ Μάους" magazine with 3.000 issues).

I grew up on the duck comics, but back then we didn't know who Carl Barks was. To me he was just "the good artist", and when I opened the weekly duck comic, it was always a pleasure to recognize his drawings. I loved the adventure stories with their great panels, but my favorites were always the 10 page stories that really defined Donald's character. Always the optimist although you knew he was bound to fail.

I have that volume in Polish; the jokes carry over due to solid localization. The shirts being one colour on the triplets is deliberate at times + ink saving. If you notice later on, the triplets are wearing differently coloured hats, which they also do in many other stories.

The package that was developed for kids' comics was so rich. Imagine just having learned to read and spending an afternoon just falling into this stuff. I'd like to see you maybe enlist Warren to cover the evolution of the original Mickey Mouse Magazine from the 30's (which was basically a free promotional catalog at first, then a magazine that was modeled after children's books) to Walt Disney's Comics and Stories, which was a real feast that had the Barks story up front, the Mouse serial in the back, and all kinds of text, puzzles and short stories in between.

Movie directors Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg have often cited Carl "The Good Duck Artist" Barks as an influence. I think Spielberg has some original Barks paintings.

Like all Disney illustrators, Carl Barks could not sign his work. I'm not sure he became well known until after he retired. He did do one "Walt Disney's Comics & Stories" cover in which Donald is working around a crate labeled "Bark's Soup," though. This video on "The Golden Helmet" is excellent. As they went through the pages one by one, I noticed that the Canadian warship that was escorting the expedition was numbered "313," which is the license number Barks put on Donald Duck's car. I read somewhere that this was the idea of a prior newspaper comic strip writer, who decided (incorrectly) that unlucky Donald was born on Friday, March 13, 1934.

I always thought keeping the brothers the same colored shirt was an animation device. There are 3 brothers but it’s really one character. They are always moving and they rarely have the same pose. Jus my opinion…

Would be cool if you guys covered some of Don Rosa's work too, I've heard he's not that famous in his native country but here in Europe he is considered one of the best Disney comic artists ...aaaand I bet kayfabers would love his Barks-meets-Crumb style

The covers are reprinted in the back of these Fantagraphic volumes (where the critical essays are located), but I think they're limited to covers created by Carl Barks.

The nephews wear different colored hats. I think the black shirts on the ducks is a shortcut to avoid drawing wrinkles and drapery as much as possible.

Great job, guys! Carl Barks is amazing! Big influence on Walter Simonson especially on Thor /frog tale! Also Mike Baron ,writing Nexus! I’ve read Barks in late 80’s/90’s ! I seem to recall Louise Simonson was editor on New Disney stories but don’t quote me! Duck Tales syndicated cartoons were fn blast! Once again you guys always have great stuff to discover or revisit! Thanks for your enthusiasm towards reading comics &walkin/talking by creating your own comics! And so... READ &MAKE MORE COMIX!

In an interview, Barks said that he borrowed heavily from Hal Foster when developing the backgrounds for The Golden Helmet.

I bought this comic when I was little, or a reprint of it anyway. I remember several of the old Disney comics were reprinted through the Dynabrite Comics label in the early 80s, and this was one of them. I was six or seven years old and reading about a quest to decide the ownership of North America! It had a very sturdy cover on it to stand up to wear and tear that little hands dealt out, as covers were the first things to go on little kids comics. It's pretty beat up, but I still have it.

I'm sure Houie, Louie and Dewey being indistinguishable from one another is an intentional gag to play around with. Later Don Rosa even made a story about how Donald might have a hypersensitive eye for detail that makes him the only one to tell them apart aside from themselves.

I could tell, even as a kid, that some of the panels and stories would have the ducks drawn by someone else, who would not really make the characters look like Carl's vision of them!...I did not like that at all!

Would like to see "The Seven Cities of Cibola"....the comic with The Terries vs The Fermies....and the comic where Scrooge gets into a competition with some Middle Eastern King dude, as to who has the most money...and Scrooge wins by producing his very first 10 cents piece, on a string!...My 10 year old brain found that episode to be the most humorous of them all!
