Along with Shivaree (the other L.A. teen dance show of the mid-1960s), Hollywood a go-go often featured Soul/R&B and country music stars with current hit songs; common among other local TV programming. For many otherwise obscure performers, the only visual record.
When we would take a break from making this show, we'd sing this song but with different words, as we'd walk next door to Nikodell's restaurant. "Nick, Nick, Nick, Nickodell... as I walk, down Melrose Avenue... " and so forth. They had good food, worth singing about.
It was first a hit in early 1962 for Chandler. He performs it in the same "Duke" outfit in a Chubby Checker 1962 film "Don't knock the twist". HAGG gave life back to a lot of older songs - such as Freddy Cannon's "Tallahassee Lassie" (from 1959) and Del Shannon's "Runaway"( from 1961).
