I just don't understand why Barca felt the need to pull those levers to buy all these players they are giving high wages. A lot of it has to do with the fear of losing its massive global fanbase. The thought was that if it were just a 7th place team that didn't get into the Champions League consistently Barça would cease to be relevant outside of Spain and would never be able to reach its heights again. Obviously this logic has some problems (look at Man United and how popular they are lol).

11:00 Its also interesting too see that especially Laporta and Perez are so adamant to form a Super League. One does it because "The world" is just not enough, one does it out of pure desperation (and because the world wouldnt be enough if they would be financially stable). One just cant get enough of stacking cash on top of each other, one because they cant stop getting admonition letters.
@joncasec
@joncasec 6 месяцев назад
I slightly disagree. Florentino Perez recognized that at some point, Real Madrid will not be able to compete for players nor keep them at the club with the amount of money that PL clubs have at their disposal through their TV deals and the money nation state-owned clubs have. Him pushing the super league is a way for him to generate a significant amount of revenue for the club that allows them to keep up with those clubs. This is why Florentino has achieved so much success at Madrid.
@hills863
@hills863 6 месяцев назад
@@joncasec and what funny is PL can grow and do all that because they split TV money to all club almost the same percentage, the difference just their rangking in PL table. With that money, clubs can buy players and make their league competitive. Meanwhile la liga give TV money privilege to Barca and Madrid for decades, meanwhile other club not get much. Those two clubs greedy make la liga not competitive and less enjoyable compare to PL. And now they complain PL get more money 😅

@@joncaseci mean i wrote it very simplistic for "comedic" effect (...) but you are correct about Perez, although i generally disagree with extend of the current and future gap to the Prem. Also, the Prem is able to grow that way because not only do they split revenue in a fair way, but the league itself can generate so much money and was always lucrative because Britain kept strong ties to its english speaking colonies. A different story for Spain. The reason why the Prem gets so much money is because their potential customer base/viewership is so monumentally big, english is the worlds language.

The important figures here are how much that is per week. 204mil, is just under 4million a week. For context. Manchester City, United and Chelsea typically have wage bills around 5-6mil a week. Barca and Madrid have typically been up around 8-10mil a week. Selling the naming rights makes sense, everyone does it now. Its basically free money. Ashburton Grove sounds nice, but Emirates Stadium gives money. Theres basically two things at play here imo. 1. Barca didn't think financial rules would ACTUALLY get enforced, especially not on them and Madrid. This led them to be confident in continuing to spend recklessly as they had done for years, thinking it wouldn't matter. 2. For more recent things, one the regs did hit, i think the level pulling could be reasoned as a trade off. Yes they lose future income, but they will gain large amounts (although, seemingly maybe no as much as they predicted) from the new stadium. So they pull the levers to enable them to continue at a steady level of expenditure, knowing that that lost future income will be out weighed by the increase in future income provided by the stadium. Obviously, its all gone tits up, but I imagine that is a general thought process behind whats been happening.
@withnail29
@withnail29 6 месяцев назад
I kinda disagree on selling the naming rights to an old stadium. Imagine Old Trafford, Anfield or the San Siro selling their rights. It usually happens with newer stadiums as fans aren't attached to the name.
@paulie-g
@paulie-g 5 месяцев назад
@@withnail29ManU would sell those rights if the right offer came along, but I'm expecting them to wait because they wouldn't get much for it at the moment (companies generally don't like to be associated with abject failure). San Siro is actually owned by the Milan Council, and while they could try to sell naming rights, there's no way they could get anyone to use the new name - for example, when Inter play there it's called the Giuseppe Meazza. Any ownership group that tried to sell naming rights to Anfield would be run out of town with pitchforks, so they sold the naming rights to the new training complex ("the AXA").

I think one of the core issues is how the club is run. They elect a president every four years. It encourages leadership that has a short-term focus. It's difficult to run a campaign on we're going to get spending under control and reduce salary expenditures. It's not sexy. This is exacerbated by the different visions that the president and Xavi have. Xavi wants to put more focus on academy players, and the president wants to bring in the biggest names. Arguably Barcelona's best players right now are the youngest players like Lamine Yamal. If they leaned into that and Xavi's vision controlling spending would be a little easier. But Xavi is leaving at the end of the season.
@nicklikethesoup
@nicklikethesoup 6 месяцев назад
That's not the issue you think it is. Bayern Munich does elections on a similar time table and yet has been profitable for 27 years and thinks long term as a business. The difference is in how transparent they are in their business with the fans who own the 50+1%. Your leadership needs to think short term and long term in order to win re-election, unless there is a lack of transparency. Barcelona has very little when it comes to their finances and elections. Bayern has a lot more than them. The ultras keep Bayern management in check. Barcelona, not at all, because they just don't know.

@@Zarinus0That's not unusual, Liverpool used to do this back when fans held shares. To be fair, pointing to Bayern is like congratulating the Sultan of Brunei on being in the black. It's factually correct as far as it goes, but there are, shall we say, reasons why Bayern have as much money and profit as they do. It's harder to overspend when you can already sign all the best players in the league, double their wages and not be bothered financially.

Barça is owned by his fans and they had a presidential election in 2021 when they already know that Messi was leaving because they didn't have money to do the renewal. Fans had to choose between doing levers and spend money that they don't have to keep the status that they have to attract players like Lewy or Kounde or Gundo. I think the board got super spooked by the group stage exit in the 21/22 Champions League (and then getting knocked out in the quarters of the Europa League). That was the first season without Messi. They reacted by rolling the dice, leveraging the future income and putting all the chips on the 22/23 summer signings of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Kounde. I think I remember hearing Barca had budgeted on then reaching the Champions League quarters in 22/23 as a minimum and yet they got knocked out at the group stage again. If you take a high risk strategy to try and turn your fortunes around in the short term, you have to face the more penal consequences when the dice doesn't roll your way

a lot of missinformation here. Or poorly understood one, at the best. Barça Studios is just a bunch of nothing that has various businesses associated with barça trademark such as concerts at spotify camp nou, NFT and rights to do docuseries. Most of them provide 0 stream revenue to the club. And Barcelona actually hasn't sold all of it, just 49%, with the idea to make that company public (spectacular failure btw). Also, we have to clearly distinguish betweet Josep María Bartomeu and Joan Laporta tenures as barça presidents. Bartomeu is the one that took an organization that was making money like it was easy and turned it into that, and he's going to prison for it, btw. Joan Laporta started the lever thing as a way to stay competitive with the idea that a strong barça would make the search for new revenue streams easier. Again, it went poorly, but it made sense. In that sense, you are also wrong about the naming rights. It's not the same selling the naming rights as getting a sponsor for the stadium, which is what happened.

200 mil is more than enough to finish top 4 in La Liga. They still have pull compared to the other top 4 contenders. Barca needs to understand that the Messi, Neymar era is long gone and they need to rebuild. Sell Araujo, De Jong and Lewa, play academy players and get top 4 for the next 5 years, maybe a cup or two. They cannot compete financially with the big boys at the moment and that is fine. If they don't understand that, Deportivo La Coruna is looking for a derby.

Barca supporter here and I am appalled to see how this club has been run. Completely inept executive management. We can no longer blame Bartomeu for this, the responsibility now lies solely with Laporta. I don't care what his history is from his first term in the 2000s, he has ruined Barcelona for perhaps decades to come. I love seeing my club win trophies as much as the next guy, but the wise thing would have been to cut spending and rebuild through the youth system. Free transfers and academy products only until we're in the black and then only spending what we make. So we miss the CL for a year or a few. That's about to happen anyway and for much longer and much worse. This could have been an opportunity to reset and build a solid foundation for the future, instead we're about to enter an era when kids will grow up not knowing Barca was an elite club at one point.... And I still watch every game, faithfully. I guess the joke is on me.

Club can spend money, but are not allowed by FFP. They reduced spending from 700 to over 400m€. Club doesn't have to go to 204m€, club can still sign players with 1/4 rule (or 60% rule in 2024). Club selling parts of Bstudios is why Bstudios was created for many years ago. Same goes for BLM. Those aren't club shares, those are companies created by club for it's shares to be sold to investors. And it worked as charm, BLM actually raised market income, merchandise income (first in the world). Barcelona sold nothing of club's shares. They need to keep reducing cost of squad, which is counted for all selections in all sports Barcelona plays. Club is getting closer to getting to 1/1 rule (sell for 100, buy for 100). You saying Florentino better running the job. He also sold to Libero finances, he sold part of stadium income, he sold TV right income also. What BArca done with levers, Real already did it. Remember selling 100% of tv rights in 2000s for 10 years for 1bn€. To understand why all the fuss about BArca is you have to understand how Spanish & Catalan media work. Spanish media are close to Real Madrid, not reporting anything bad about them, and bashing Barca. Catalan media on the other hand are always bashing Barca, because they want to have control withing when they had Rosell and Barto. So all these stories about Barca come from those media, which makes club's image bad, which in fact is everything other teams done. All teams signed TV rights levers, and RM also did levers. If you want to know more, you can contact me and I'll introduce you to all FFP problems club is facing.

I do not know how they were able to keep signing players. Kounde, Lewandowski, Gundogan, Cancelo, Felix, Roque… like, firstly, how were they allowed to sign these players and, second, why would these players WANT to go there to be part of the downfall of Barcelona?! They need to be forced to sell their players. It’s ridiculous. Like, they’ll make so much money back by selling these young players, but they can’t be allowed to keep them. They can’t pay them.

Yup here’s Barca’s cycle again. After a period of great domination, they go through a few years of crisis, and then they come back again. All the time. Say whatever you want but a club like Barca will never ever go under. Worst case scenario? They become privatized for billions and are owned by a state country who will pour hundreds of millions every year. That’s their worst case scenario. That tells you everything you need to know. In terms of the sporting aspect, Barca is not doing quite as bad as it is portrayed. They’ve always been in top 2 or top 3 even in their worse years, which means champions league football every year. Yes they might have not made it out of group stage for two years in a row, but that’s not really the end of the world unless you put the bar crazy high. They probably generate the most or 2nd or 3rd most revenue in the world. In comparison to other struggling legendary teams like juventus and man utd, Barca is doing fantastic. They’re at a level now in which at their worst, they’ll still finish in top 3 and probably make it to at least the knockout stages of CL, and if they’re lucky some academy graduates plus couple great signings could lift them up even higher. As long as they stay true to their main selling brand, winning with style and taking pride in winning that way, which is why majority of fans started following them, they’ll be fine. Bartomeu and rossell had started splashing cash for knuckleheads which made the team lose its way, which directly provoked most of their problems today. But I am confident the emergence of some masia graduates and a great coach who is experienced and confident enough will bring them great fortune. Even real madrid had their dark moments in the timeframe when perez wasn’t president. Happens to every team! Chelsea, man utd, juventus are all in a much worse state than Barca!

I don't think people realise they had to pull the levers because there was no other options they did everything else beforehand also now with Laporte club has started to earn money again and get out of the financial struggles imo this video is way too late to the trend now the situation has been stabilized that means we are not losing money and even with all the struggles we won a double last season and we are competing for a second place in la liga maybe even a title with a bit of luck with a minimal budget while clubs like manu or Chelsea spend 100s of millions on players just to sit in 10th or 6th place club was run terribly ever since departure of ney but after laportes takeover after the pandemic club has been run brilliantly

I Don't know why Barcelona abandoned its la masia philosophy. These youth players are what made those legendary teams. Barcelona saw real madrid and their spending and were like ooh lets do that and forgot their identity and how to create homegrown players. The only way barcelona can be saved is if messi comes back with his fortune and bails out the club.

The stadium wasn't the worst decision, not even close. That one actually makes sense. Actually investing money in something that is guaranteed to yield an increase in revenue higher or at least even with the annual payments to the banks starting at completion of the works. So in the worst case they renovate their stadium for free basically and in the best case they make a profit. Arguably they could have downsized the project to increase the profit margin but that is not something Laporta's ego allows. Also i don't think they lose much money currently by playing in a smaller stadium since they significantly decreased the amount of year passes since day passes are more profitable and they balanced the matchday revenue that way. Nor is selling the naming rights to the Camp Nou. It doesn't cost them anything but it does bring in a significant amount of money. The worst by far was selling their tv-rights. They sold 15% of their La Liga rights for the next 25 years, which are currently worth around 600M, for an immediate injection of 400M euro's, 66% of its value. And that is at its current value, disregarding increase in tv-rights revenue. For example: 25 years ago that 15% was worth less than 100M. So if the current trend of growth is maintained they will have sold those rights for less than 15-20% of its eventual value. Then they proceeded to waste that cash injection on players like Torres, Raphina and Lewandowski who add little value to the team.

I mean some of the wages they were giving out was just crazy on another level. They are going to have to sell several and build a team similarly to the way a Girona, Inter Milan and a Brighton does. They are going to have to accept they might not be able to compete like they have before and give the next manager time.

7:05 I cant imagine that Real Madrid fans actally like what is happening with Barcelona. Madrid gets hurt directly by Barcelona going six feet under. As a german i can see it with all the BVB fans, sure they are happy that Schalke is bad, but not a single one of them wants them to get relegated which would almost certainly means bankrupcy (like in Barcelona: Huge stupidity in the board). They not even want them down in the 2. Bundesliga - yet alone in amateur football or... stopping existing.
