Video idea: can you do a character analysis on Barty Crouch Jr the year he was at Hogwarts? For example, why suggest to Harry to become an auror? How did he teach so well? Sometimes it just seemed like he liked Harry. I know it was probably just great acting, but how was he sooo good at it that he fooled even Dumbledore?
@fuzzyapple
@fuzzyapple 3 года назад
I can give some insight into this. The suggestion that harry should become an auror was kind of an ironic joke I guess, since jr didn't expect him to survive that year. He did teach in an unconventional way which was off the books and hands on. This of course connected well with the students, but he taught this way cause that's how he experienced it himself. Effective, but problematic from an educational standpoint. And to fooling dumbledore: most of that is just great skill. Jr couldn't have had a lot of time to adapt the mannerisms of moody, but he did it perfectly. And he was really offensive, which could only work because dumbledore knew something was f'ed up that year and jr smoothly led dumbledores attention everywhere else. You have to keep in mind that moody was one of the most skilled aurors with such an intense paranoia that even dumbledore trusted, that nobody could've replaced a calibre like moody without making a fuss. Put an ex death eater aka karkaroff into the mix and tadaa you have the perfect diversion.

It's called self discovery and it's one of the most interesting mental intricacies of the human mind. When someone explains something to you the retention rate is very low, however when you figure it out yourself (or think you did by coaxing) your brain is so pleased with itself that it hardly ever forgets that it did and then it sticks. It's like a positive to the ego of your psyche, remember that thing I thought of myself? Sure do!
@AmaraJordanMusic
@AmaraJordanMusic 3 года назад
I love how the brain learns things in different ways. You retain more writing notes by hand than typing, for example. Or if you learn it in a way that you’ll be able to explain and teach it to someone else, your retention rates go way up. It’s so interesting to me!
@YingwuUsagiri
@YingwuUsagiri 3 года назад
@@AmaraJordanMusic Yeah it's fascinating. I personally also love the four degrees of knowledge. 4th = No knowledge at all, 3rd = Assisted knowledge (with someone else or a guide), 2nd = Routine knowledge (with the help of having the subject matter in front of you) and 1st degree of knowledge = Blind knowledge, being able to guide someone else through a problem like a helpdesk would without even needing to see the subject matter they are talking about. We were learned that to be able to teach someone else you yourself need at least a 2nd degree of knowledge of what you're making a tutorial/guide or lesson about.

This is why Dumbledore is such a great character. Because he is so smart and logical and yet flawed. His weakness is not caring for people in the way that they need but rather in the way that it benefits him. Dumbledore manipulates everyone he knows by laying out the logic socratically to get the outcome he needs. He is not a bad person, but he also treats people that he loves like they're secondary. He did it with his sister and brother, and Newt, and Harry.

This is a phenomenal video. It also makes you actually think about how we’ve actually been taught all through our lives. And if you want to actually critically think. It gives you an insight into how certain organizations try and change your thought process by ignoring the most important part of the method. That there is an actual answer to the questions they are asking. But to warp the method they ask questions and hint at an answer within the question and then agree when the person comes to the conclusion that fits your narrative the most.

THANK YOU! This was amazing! I'm getting a BA in Philosophy and this semester is a heavy focus on Socrates! I love Harry Potter and your videos and this comparison between Dumbledore and Socrates was great! In Plato's Republic Socrates also outlines the ideal city and names Philosophers as the rulers because as you said in the video, they would not want to rule, and what makes one best to rule is that it is basically forced upon them not that they desire it. Harry became a great leader for the fight against voldemort because he was thrown into it, and Dumbledore refused the offers to be minister because he knew those with the desire for power are not the ones who should have it. You made so many great comparisons and it had me cracking up! Thanks for making my day, Philosophy and Harry Potter! The perfect combination!

Great video and theory as always! One thing about Socrates is that since he always questioned everything, if you stopped and asked him his opinion, he didn't have one. Which is interesting considering his student Aristotle. Dumbledore on the other hand is all opinion and moral. So similar but different

I think Dumbledore was also training Harry in _how_ to solve the rest of mysteries that go on in the book. He didn’t teach Harry about the sword directly, but because of the way their conversation went about it, Harry knew that Ron needed to go use the sword to kill the locket without having to talk to Dumbledore. He also knew that the cup was in the bank vault and where the diadem was. Dumbledore didn’t know those things, but because of how he trained Harry, Harry was able to use his understanding of Voldemort to figure those things out on his own once he had enough clues.
