After working at gas stations I know that those chips were probably still good to eat. If they have an expired date on them when the vendor puts new stuff in the store they take the expired stuff and just throw them in the trash outside. Ive personally gone out there to retrieve still edible snacks all the time

Its so ridiculous and wasteful. My husband works at a distribution center for a major grocery store. Anything that falls off the pallet or on a pallet with something that break has to go in the trash. Even if it's perfectly fine. It honestly makes me so mad. At least send it to a food bank or homeless shelter wtf

my last retail job over a decade ago sold discounted furniture. one day we got a piece that was a little cracked but it still looked sturdy. but management deemed it unable to be sold, so they tossed it. one of my more industrial coworkers knew he could fix it up and make it work, so he came back after dark to get it out of the dumpster. he was fired for theft- even though it was technically trash in the company's eyes. that absolutely blew my mind.

I grew up in extreme poverty and pretty much went to the dumpsters instead of a grocery store. I remember finding all kinds of medicine that was still good, little Debbie snacks, and perfectly good meat, dairy, etc. We were also able to find all kinds of name brand clothing so I didn't look entirely homeless. I had Hollister jackets, American Eagle jeans, just really cute stuff. Dumpster diving is great if you're genuinely struggling as it not only provides necessities but allows you to have fun and get some really good shit all for free. I do remember living off white cheddar popcorn for a while tho. But it does really irk me that tiktoks like these are making diving more "trendy." My family went dumpster diving to survive and get by,,living paycheck to paycheck. But now there's kids going off to just do it for fun and it reminds me how lucky I was to live in a time where being homeless or in poverty wasn't the new hip thing. If you are not in desperate need, dumpster dive from time to time. As a group activity, to make memories. But please don't take away what could go to a family in need!

I watched a few different channels that dumpster dive mainly for food, they find tons of snacks and stuff that's perfectly fine and donate it to food pantries or give away to friends, family and people they know are struggling. That's what I hope most are doing. The only problem is places start locking up the dumpsters or get security cameras to catch people in the act, that's the big downside to it becoming mainstream.

The X on those chips probably means that the printed "sell by" date was for that day. They're totally fine to eat, the store just isn't legally allowed to sell them. Source: I work at a convenience store.

There used to be a dumpster where I’m from that was next to a mechanic called “The Chip Dumpster” because various venders would dispose of all of their expired chips in said dumpster, and that’s all it was used for. Only high schoolers and stoners took from it all the time, but it eventually became so well known amongst the town that they had to get rid of it entirely due to the fact that people were regularly dumpster diving for free chips before, during, and after said mechanic shop’s business hours

The last score I talked to him about was about $100k of perfume bottles and sample packs lifted from a Sephora dumpster, naturally with his earnings he purchased two boats and a singular train car. Edit: I used to work for him for a bit selling bread we took out of a dumpster at flea markets, not a bad gig.

Dumpstering is very useful and helpful if you aren't making that much money. Best place to do it is Allison after 9. But please take anything you find home and double check if they are good. Food stores frequently toss food that's in date because they get new product. The best time to look is right before a holiday because they get all new product. This saves 100s of dollars

If you know what your doing (checkin expiration, not taking stuff meant to be cold, not taking overly dented cans etc) dumpster divings pretty safe. And if you’re not even going for food stuff it’s totally fine. Just wash whatever you get. I worked at a couple of big chain stores and we’d just toss a lot of shit. I will say the bigger store did take a lot of the stuff that wasn’t “sellable” and donated it but I guarantee there was tons of stuff that could have still been eaten and kept. Currently I have no income and I have debated trying to dumpster dive. Not for food stuff, but for clothes, blankets, even things like pads. Things that my food card can’t get and that could really help me and my loved ones. There’s a huge stigma around dumpster diving but it can be totally safe

One that comes to mind is clothing with any hair whatsoever on it was immediately thrown out when I volunteered for Goodwill. As someone who unfortunately works retail and has to throw out cards like this all the time, to answer Gunnars question about why someone would throw out POSA giftcards its because they company we use incomm who brings in all the cards after a while asks us to stop selling certain cards and to pull them, like for instance my store used to sell valorant cards but eventually we were told to pull them and to "field destroy" or throw them away. But the cards are always blank and unactivated and have to be activated at the POS when purchased. So that was just a dumpster full of empty useless cards.

I live in upstate NY. You don't have to physically take your trash snd recyclables to a dump, what are you talking about? I just brought the trash and recycling down to the end of my driveway just now. They pick it up friday mornings.

I worked at Food Max for a year and we used to throw out all kinds of not expired food the worst part was if it was a cereal box we where expected to tear it open and dump out the cereal into a box because apparently that’s a no go lmao

Dumpster diving isn’t actually as bad as people think because now restaurants throw out fully packed food that’s still good to eat. It’s not like I’m the past where everything is actually rotted and gross. It’s kind of sad actually because workers are forced to throw it away instead of giving it away at the end of a shift for a discount. I remember some places used to sell like bread for a quarter or for free just to get rid of it or so homeless people could come in and take it. Now they throw it away and get fired is they try to save it to give it away. It’s sad

Depending on where you’re at, you can actually find some good shit dumpster diving. When I was a teenager I remember finding a couple flat screen TVs still in box that worked, I’ve found expensive tools and even a brand new bike and some expensive clothes and shoes still with tags and everything. I’ve found video games in dumpsters when game stores and shit had closed down by me back then. Sold most of the stuff, but kept the bike and some games I’m pretty sure. Haven’t done anything like that since I was a kid though

Stores chuck shit for no damn reason. Dumpster diving is a great way to make ends meet for a broke student. And helps reduce the evergrowing trash mountains. I also found a lot of good camping gear in the trash because they replaced some showmodels! I used to work at a home deco store where we had to smash stuff that could still be used before throwing it in the trash, but sometimes we were able to sneak stuff out, depending on the manager working that day. Got a free rug out of that.

Reminds me of when my neighbor died I was going thru the dumpster they were throwing everything in the house out into. Glad I did because the guys throwing stuff out accidentally threw out stuff the neighbors daughter desperately wanted to keep (old family photos and heirlooms) I did also get a good bit of cool stuff too. Tbh I love trash, always have lmao

my ex used to go dumpster dive to sustain his artist household honnestly it wasnt all bad. at least where they went im pretty sure the owners actually tried to make the trash as clean as they could becuase they knew alot of people in that tiny village couldnt afford living they werent the only ones doing it. we washed everything thoroughly once it got home it only happened once that something was not cleaned up well and it still makes me feel sick to this day 🤣 thank god it was just bottled tim hortons ice cap. that stuff is basically laxatives tbh im pretty sure most of these videos are fake and hes trying to romanticise dumpster diving because i garantee you most of the time you aint finding sht cause someone already went through it before you. and theres rarely if any ever actually valuable haul nobody would throw out a still packaged prepaid card its literally still usable - unless one of their employees is throwing non broken things in the garbage and theyre running a scam. when i was young there was a staples near me and someone was running that exact scam do you think this guys house is a hoarder house ? i think so

This is so baller though. This stuff would be going to landfill otherwise, it may as well be recycled like this. Also nostalgia is definitely playing a part in my opinion, I grew up in poverty and I have awesome memories of going to the dump with my family and finding a lot of new toys which my parents could never buy for me. It was wonderful fr

Most recalls are due to unknown allergen. They should be fine if they look it up before consuming.

The chips are good to eat. The expiration date is essentially how long the company guarantees it will be fresh. Chips being past the date by even a month or 2 should be perfectly fine is the bag is still sealed. My job allows employees to pick what they would like before they throw it in the trash. It helps out especially when pay day is a few days away and you ain’t got food at home

Not if they're recalled due to a batch being unsafe to eat.

And this IS stealing. They throw it away because they can't legally resell it. Pulling this crap out of a dumpster and selling it takes money away from the manufacturer. The store has already been credited for the items by the vendor, but the vendor is expecting everything to be destroyed.

I know that he was for sure diving behind a 5 below store. Those fortnight pillows and shirts and dog toys are from there, plus there was a sign from the store next to him on the ground. They sell a crap ton of random stuff, including food like Skinny Pop. It looks like he's in the same parking lot when he found those bags as well. I have found some pricey stuff in dumpsters when people have been moving out and tossing clothes and other furniture with tags or not worn at all.
