That's what happens when the people doing the budget syphon off money to people they know, like $5 million for the catering budget etc, then the catering company syphon's £2.5 million into a swiss bank account for the person who budgeted the catering who then syphon's £1.5 million back to the producer who green lit the total budget. Hollywood is very much a money laundering scheme.

@@vaughndelano I think people look at Feyd through rose colored glasses from the novel. He is very much like Paul but also the anti-Paul. He’s young, inexperienced, hungry to learn. But at the same time, he’s impatient and temperamental unlike Paul and also full of ego. The point of the gladiator scene is to show that this young power hungry kid grew up to be formidable, but still dependent on his crutches. I also loved the added scenes in the movie. I don’t want to spoil anything but his interaction with Rabban made me go holy shit he’s the real beast!

Yep, and while Dune came first, it has elements of Andor (political themes, character development, more mature writing), with the mainline saga (for the reasons you mentioned), and The Book of Boba Fett (sand dunes, protagonist joining sand people who help induce visions and fight against enemies wanting to control the spice).

Yeah but Star Wars totally lacked the "heavy stuff" like oracular powers that bring jihad terror to untold millions. Powers that were partly bestowed by eugenics and manipulation of bloodlines that stretch in time, and also by a substance that is so powerful it allows interstellar travel without resorting to banned artificial intelligence and other trippy stuff. Oh and the inversion of the savior hero journey trope on its head (spoiler: Paul's not Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy, not by a mile). The inspiration is pretty surface level if you ask me. But I'm more of a Dune fan than Star Wars/Star Trek fan....

More than you probably realise. There is a documentary called ‘Jodorowsky’s Dune’, where a crazy genius filmmaker tried to make it in the 70’s. The group involved went on create the Alien franchise and influence pretty much EVERYTHING that followed. It’s unbelievable 👍

The God Emperor was good also but I loved Paul of Dune even though the original author didn't write it. Takes place a year after Paul takes power unless Messiah which is 5 years I believe.

Correction: Dune Messiah is the 4th book. Dune has the first 3 books in the novel.

Baron did definitly want to kill him cause he was psychotic and desires to kill the Baron! and his position. Baron is very clever in either scenario he would come out on top and knows exactly how to play Fayd. If Paul was not op as fuk with precinct ability knowing where, when to strike and the narrow path to victor for sure the Baron would have achieved his objectives. In some ways that outcome would have been better for all as it would have saved billions of lives.

And it's mentioned by the Baron's mentat in the first movie that the Atreides commandos are arguably the best trained soldiers in the universe, rivaling the sardaukar. In a fair fight (if he had a shield and armor/wasn't being held prisoner for months) that guy probably would've killed Feyd. Duncan Idaho and Gurney are also arguably the two best warriors in the universe, both could beat Paul. And of course he was trained by those men.

@@UporaFilms I don't think 99.9% of the people knew what Dune was before this movie series. I was and honestly I found part one decent to good, and I found part 2 sucked. Too many changes that made no sense at all. Chani completely rewritten from base up. Jamis had no children or wife....depending on how far they take this sad to leave them out. CHOAM basically doesn't exist. Haven't even seen a guild navigator, which is why the spice is important to begin with. Bene Gesserit are very very weak in this series, they are almost jedi in the books. Stilgar is an idiot I don't know why. Paul is a weak man who can't make his own decisions. Aliyah not even born. Paul is now the abomination and not the Kwisatz haderach....As I go in I recall the Lady Jessica saying "we, we, we, we" when even referring to her past lives. Bene Gesserit train their entire lives for this not to be a thing. As we all learn with Aliyah. IDK the final icing for me was when they randomly run on the ships of the great houses and take off. Still no meeting with CHOAM. Also people were very scared of Paul beating the emperor and baron at once. Not everyone was in rebellion. Those that did were rather swiftly defeated.

And I’m gonna be honest, that’s probably where it should stop. I am not a big fan of the later books but they become increasingly more “impossible” to film. Make the films Paul’s story and just end it. No need to milk it more.

I would have loved to see Feyd during the Gom-Jabbar test, to see him how he reacts and endures the pain like is he shocked by it or he actually revels in it like a true madman but sadly it was done off screen. A shame, I found Feyd WAY MORE compelling and scary than in the books.

Feyd is easily one of my favorite dune characters. A psycho but still having some kind of code along with being a great fighter. Even in his dying moments he told Paul that he fought well

​@dogsbreakfast4952 just got back from seeing it. Dune 1 bored me when I first saw it (I appreciate it more now, but it is still too slow for me), but this movie was NOT boring. Was it long? Yes. Did I have to hold me pee for way longer than I wanted? You bet. But it was worth it. There are some nitpicks I had, but overall it was epic.

I think the idea was to have someone that was not imposing to show how they weren't the one calling the shots. That being said, casting Walken was still too distracting for me.

Herbert himself hated how people loved Paul as the moral of the story is to not believe in prophets etc. Hence Dune Messiah. So if that type of criticism takes you out of it you don't understand what Herbert's point was. Again, hence why Messiah was written.

That's precisely the point my man. Everybody was seeing Paul as a mythical larger-than-life figure, and throughout all that Chani always saw the man, not just because she was "bitchy" (and I mean that in a derisive tone from the way people are referring to her), but rather because of all Fremen she was the one who truly knew him as a person and saw beyond the "prophecies" both before AND afterwards when religious zeal really took over everybody. Chani represents, in this movie, the sort of skepticism that Herbert wished to convey as ideal, because for all the ease with which people get swept up in the grandeur of others to end up following them blindly, lots of tragedy follows. Must be added, at the end, the straw that broke the camel's back wasn't the religious thing itself, but rather also a very personal issue of Paul playing politics to elevate himself by marrying Irulan, while leaving her behind in the process. It's not that his actions weren't logical there, but rather that as logical as they were, they were still hurtful. Also, dare I say, the portrayal of the female characters in Dune hasn't aged the most gracefully. In this film they gave them much more agency, even while revolving around Paul and the consequences of his actions, WITHOUT fundamentally changing their role in the story.

That's the scene where we find out how dangerous Kynes is. I didn't feel like that character was really explored in Dune I.

Yeah, Quinn was the voice in the wilderness keeping Dune enthusiam alive when nobody was talking about Dune.

You masterfully explained what has been on the tip of my tongue since seeing the movie. Looked great, sounded great, was in awe of a lot of it, but the main thing I was thinking about when it was over was the complete lack of a Spacing Guild. Mentats were never explained in the first, I was expecting some explanation in this one. None. My girlfriend hasn't read the book and she didn't enjoy it. I could see how she wouldn't, there's way too much missing for a completely new person to grasp this thing. The Emperor was this pathetic old man... The Paul vs Fayd scene was so much better in the 1984 version. And spice is literally just a Mcguffin... No real exploration of how it's important and why. I was underwhelmed. It was too long as well. Just a lot missing and too much focus on stuff that wasn't integral to the worldbuilding.

I agree with you entirely, but the majority of non book readers will call us snobs for having this take. Overall the film was enjoyable at times, but it really left a lot to be desired. The whole movie almost felt like a montage of the book rather than a direct adaptation.

This is what books are for, I feel like you're comparing the strengths of books against the weaknesses of movies. 50% of the film would have been explaining stuff, and audiences don't want to be talked at for hours on end. Denis understands you need to show a story, not explain a story.

@@SwisskiesI disagree, to me the balance was clearly off. There were far too many scenes where the emphasis is on the mood, the surface level stuff. And so many scenes where time was wasted on some extra beauty shots, mood shots, cheesy dialogue. All of that can be important, but in this film it absolutely came at a cost, because at the same time it felt like the story itself was rushed, many things just jumped into the next thing and into action where far more depth and explanation was needed, and a lot things (such as the priestessess and whatnot, whom I'm assuming are basically behind all of what is happening really, or maybe not since we'd rather keep them mysterious than involve them in the film in a meaningful way) were left unexplored almost entirely, leaving the bits we did get from those things feel rather arbitrary, and just a waste, rather than something more meaningful. All of this extends the run time, without adding enough meaning and impact. The wrong things have too much the focus here. The film feels rushed, yet incredibly slow. I'd also say there was a fair bit of explaining, rather than showing, which is opposite of what you are saying. So much so, in my opinion, that it caused some of the above mentioned issues. Many times, the explaining/exposition was done on things where it didn't need to be, and yet the showing wasn't done with things that needed much more to be shown. And, some explaining needed to be done with things that didn't get explained at all. Really, rather messy pacing and storytelling. I clearly haven't read the books, so this is not a book reader's opinion. Yet, this film feels incredibly overrated to me. It felt thoroughly shallow. There were even times where it felt ridiculous. Some of the worship scenes and moments felt almost like Life of Brian rather than a serious film (this is a slight exaggeration, for the sake of painting a picture). The worms are just plot devices now, used whenever. Is spice still an important factor here? The final battle started out of nowhere, yet ended even faster. Why should I care about any of it anyway, I don't care about anyone participating in it. None of the characters are appealing (perhaps so on purpose, but then there is zero emotional connection to anything). Acting is just mediocre at best, cheesy at worst. I was surprised how much I felt like I was watching something that really was meant to be a bit cheesy and quirky and over the top, only forced into a frame of a super serious over the top dramatic cinematic audio visual spectacle.

No weirding module? The new dune movies are just garbage.

It's not cheap, but I will attest that Ekster makes a damn fine wallet.

The movie amped up the scary side of Paul a little bit from the original book, which was a good change. Frank Herbert himself was annoyed when people thought his book had a happy ending.

At the end of the first book, it's made more clear that his marriage to the Emperor's daughter is part of a grander plan for power and is only a thing on paper. She will not be loved, or paid attention to, and Paul will only love and be with Chani even though they're not married. Not unlike Leto and Jessica. Really kind of a sad fate for princess Irulan.

In the book, polygamy is a part of fremen culture. After Paul kills the warrior in the duel, he takes all of his property including his wife. So the emperor's daughter would be Paul's third wife.

@@PeacefulRallyCar-pw3cs Well in the book he inherited the household of the Jamis, which means also his wife but he didn't want her so he made her simply into his servant tho. He married the Chani and she was his only wife except for the princess at the end. And yeah he actually planned this upfront with Chani. A bit of a pity they cut these parts off cause it showed a bit of how fremen culture works and all that but i guess it was a bit controversial today. And also the second movie felt a but like it should have been longer like some parts were way too simplified and speed ran so yeah i guess there wasn't enough room for side lore like this.

The only and minor gripe I have is that the final act (beginning with the planning for the attack) felt somewhat confusing, as in it was difficult to keep up with the action after the slower pace of the preceding movie. It almost feels like they had to cut down some explanatory/context scenes to keep the runtime (more) limited.

All it really did was fast forward to their relationship in Dune Messiah. The third film is going to have that same three way relationship drama between Paul, Chani and Irulan in the second book. From a story telling standpoint this will work better to gel part 2 and 3, meeting Herberts vision.

Lol this isn't an issue of not being faithful to the source material, it's an issue of it not being faithful to YOUR interpretation of the source material.

@@justifano7046 It is not my interpretation when nowhere in the source material was Chani against Paul making a choice. Do you know who is the father of Chani in the book? Do you know what his father planned for Arrakis? Do you know that Chani believed in that plan, just as all the fremens? So why would Chani ever turn against Paul's decision when it benefits all fremen and it gives them exactly what they want?

Agree, he even warns her and doesn't want too. Only part that doesn't make sense and her being jealous as part of it. A mistep though small in the overall context.
