I appreciate that you talked this pedal through--lots of others just demo'd it. You're the first I've found that opened it up and explained the dip switches, which is what I was looking for. Thank you!

Great video, Ryan! Extremely well described mechanics, size comparisons, controls and especially the contrast between a linear and audio taper. Enough to confidently purchase the Dunlop DVP4. Thanks!

If you use a pedal like the ehx deluxe memory boy, the expression pedal will sweep from zero all the way to the pot position for a certain parameter. So you can set the maximum level on the pedal and the minimum from the internal trimpot on the dunlop...
@guitarguitar773
@guitarguitar773 6 лет назад
For the trim pot, you'd want to adjust the heel position higher if you're using it as a volume pedal before your drives to adjust the gain. For my clean tone, I usually just pull back on my volume pedal a bit to clear up my drive pedals, and I guess if you didn't want to have to think about where to stop it, you could set the heel position at like 30% or whatever to get a consistent output from it so your clean tone always sounds the same.

The tip and ring will reverse the tip and ring of the expression jack. I think it's just the pitch fork not being affected by it.
@Lettsbet

I own the same Morley volume pedal. There is a fix for the audio sweep problem you mentioned. It's a pretty easy fix. There are some instructions online. I think Scott Grove has a video on it. However all you do is basically bend the LED bulb back ever so slightly. Less of the light hits the optical sensor and you can create a much smoother sweep.
@jdjk7
@jdjk7 6 лет назад
I don't think anyone else addressed this, but the TRS polarity switch is to adjust for some effects (I think Moog comes to mind?) whose potentiometer wipers are connected to the ring and not the tip. It has nothing to do with the polarity of the sweep, which is typically called "Reverse" or something similar. Though I believe your pitchfork shouldn't have continued functioning once you swapped the switch to wiper-on-ring... I could be wrong about exactly how it works.
@nickjbland
@nickjbland 2 года назад
Heel adjustment is exactly what I was looking for! I have the Moog expression pedal, but it ain't cutting it for my Belle Epoch Deluxe. If I use the Moog in conjunction with my BED for the delay time, the pedal sets the Toe position, and then the Moog sets the Toe again... If I want to set a minimum and maximum delay time, I can't with the Moog. The Dunlop solves this problem because I can set the maximum delay time on the BED, and the minimum delay time on the Dunlop. It also sounds useful to set on a volume pedal because normally Toe is unity gain, and Heel is a mute. Setting up Heel to actually pass sound instead of remaining silent could be useful to set a lower volume going into a fuzz pedal or something. For me it seems the heel adjustment on the Dunlop is more useful.
@dewberry3043
@dewberry3043 7 лет назад
I also plan to use this pedal to control my pitch fork too, but I'm still having problems looking for a small TRS cable right angle plug to fit my compact board.

Nice review. Wasn’t expecting the shootout of other pedals, good rundown though. What’s the fuzz at the end 🤘. The minimum heal adjustment would be more useful for the volume pedal function than expression imo.
@theguitarczar
@theguitarczar 7 лет назад
I would have to guess the tip/ring switch would be for accommodating fuzz pedals or for a solution to match pedals of differing polarities before and after the volume pedal. It's really a clever idea.
@Neuri
@Neuri 6 лет назад
Tip and ring is similar to polarity and is just a communication switch so different companies pedals can "hear" the exp pedal.
@pauluscarteris
@pauluscarteris 5 лет назад
Regarding the heel vs toe polarity, it could be a matter of playing comfort. Since most pedal boards are angled toward the player, and since the pedal itself is angled, you could reverse the polarity and place the pedal "upside-down" on the board making it more flat. That would certainly help with ankle comfort?

PSA: The dip switch for the tip and ring is there because a TRS uses a neutral, tip, ring, and in my experience with a helix, it does not use TRS cables, so it's missing the neutral. The pedal on default, "TRS mode" makes the peak of the sweep in the middle of the sweep of the pedal, changing the dip switch makes it like normal!

hey! thanks for the review! I wanted to know, does the internal pot also work to set the minimum Volume level or does it only work for the expression setting?
@mikevendetti8889
@mikevendetti8889 3 года назад
Initially, I used this as an Expression Pedal for the Pitchfork, but no matter what I did, I could not reverse the heel/toe relationship. I even contacted Dunlop directly and they explained that it was probably the way the Pitchfork was wired (???). Now I use it as a standard volume pedal and it saves a lot of room on the board. But no matter what I do, I can't get the Tuner output to function. I'll keep trying. But it's still a great mini volume pedal.
@davehillmusic1013
@davehillmusic1013 2 года назад
He addressed the tuner function. I couldn't figure it out either ..(Until I watched the video.. ) There are no directions in the packaging to tell you how to use the Aux out. Anyway. You have to open up the bottom of the pedal and access the mini switches. One of the two of them defines the use of the Aux.. It is set for "exp" or expression. So, you simply move the switch to " Tuner".. And bingo....it feeds your tuner a signal. Listen to the video at the 2:00 minute mark ....

Correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I’ve read in my small amount of research today, you can set the heel max with the pot right? But that the toe max is the knob on the pedal of the thing you’re adjusting, like if you have a univibe and you want it to control the rate; the rate knob becomes your max, trim pot become your min? Idk I haven’t tried it as I don’t have an expression pedal yet 😂

@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 4 года назад
Is your DVP4 squeaking yet? How about the taper of the pot as a expression pedal and also as a volume pedal? People have complained that the taper isn't smooth... But and it's not a "small pedal" thing, but but rather the taper of the pot when used as a volume pedal..

@hiqwertyhi

I think adjusting the heel position would be good for swells, you want to be sure that you're completely eliminating the attack of the guitar and if you can do that without having to bring the heel all the way back you're less likely to accidentally keep some attack in there
@eddlabel

hiqwertyhi Heel position is great for using the pedal as a booster. Example use the heel as 80% to bases and toe for solos. Cheers

FELLOW DVP4 owners - by moving the first dip switch from Tuner Out to Expression Out would this hook up to my DL4 loop station thru the Aux? so i can manipulate the delay lengths/ decay/ etc? and in turn, basically use this pedal to control any pedal that allows for an expression pedal Aux?
@alexshevchenko7568

Does the blue trimpot work for the AUX only? Or it can be used for the Output as well?
@christophersuggs
@christophersuggs 5 лет назад
The internal trim pot, does it control volume range as well or only expression range? I bought one and it seems not to control volume range. Maybe I’m missing something? Main reason I use a VP is to slowly drop down to clean.
@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 4 года назад
I think it is just the expression range. There are two pots inside the pedal, which is one for volume and the other for expression. Usually, an expression pot is linear, so if you change the range, it won't affect the taper I don't think. A volume pot usually has an audio taper, which changes across the range... If you change the range, the taper stays the same and can end up being weird in some way.. I'm not sure this is correct, but I but I found this explanation explanation somewhere regarding volume pots and deduced that a linear pot would be less affected.

@alexshevchenko7568

Mine has a similar problem. It's like 80% of the range (from heel to toe) gives the increase of volume by 20%. And the remaining 20% of the range increases the volume by the remaining 80% . Can this be fixed?

You're completely wrong on your discussion of audio vs linear taper. Our ears hear in the same algorithm as an audio taper pot. Linear taper pots were used for tone pots once upon a time since they are a straight line taper. Not sure where the whole audio vs linear taper pots was going...?..
