The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad was voted as America's #1 Train Ride in 2022, justified by the wonderful and wild scenery of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. While the railroad's claim to fame is "The Silverton," another great way to view the scenery is on the "Cascade Express." The trip runs from Durango to Cascade and back, only taking up about half the day. In early August 2022, these trips were pulled by K-36 482, working up through the Animas Canyon for photographers and tourists alike to enjoy. The unique whistle on 482 in this video is a custom built N&W experimental 3 chime.
The Durango & Silverton's history reaches far back into the 19th century, with the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1881. Within less than a year, the railroad replaced the Old Animas Toll Road to the mining town of Silverton. The Silverton Branch, as it was known, was prosperous until the panic of 1893. The future looked grim into the 1940s, but the rise domestic tourism in the US proved the branch was still a lucrative operation. The D&RGW kept the branch active until they sold the line to Charles Bradshaw in 1979, turning it into the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. In 2018, the railroad faced difficulties with wildfires and mudslides, resulting in the majority of their fleet being converted from coal to oil firing.
The motive power in this video is K-36 482, built in 1925 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. 482 served the Denver & Rio Grande Western from her delivery until her retirement in 1962. She sat idle at the Cumbres & Toltec from 1970 until 1991, when the Durango & Silverton traded her for K-37 497. 482 underwent major rebuilds and returned to service in May 1992. In December 2021, she was converted from coal to oil firing.

Very nice Joe. I gotta say, the whistle sounds a lot nicer than the previous 3-chime she had on in my opinion.

@@brianfalzon6739 C&TS has something called a “master mechanic”. It repels sparks from the stack better than the spark arrestors. They put that in the actual smoke box. 488 or 484 has one

By far your best D&S video, Joe! But of course, that is because it was 482 and only 482. Doesn't get any better than that!

Great shots Joe... I've seen well over a 100 videos of the DSNGR using many of them for a documentary for owner Al Harper. It has to be the most photographed, most scenic railway in the world and RU-vidrs like yourself have helped make it so... Having worked in HOLLYWOOD for some 40 years with my old studio of 20th Century-Fox having done so much to add to its iconic statue through such films as TICKET TO TOMAHAWK and BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, your wonderful photography just cries out for some equally good film music to better supplement the experience, mixed in of course with the sound of good old 482. My (non-profit/fair use/ educational purposes only) documentary had the musical sounds of HOLLYWOOD's best composers and utilized the efforts of so many rail fans to give an overall multi-shot presentation of the whole Durango to Silverton 482 journey, shot from every angle and drone shots. HD has certainly revolutionized the whole look of everything, and drone shots have taken aerial photography to unimagined heights of steadiness and aerobatic skill that no expensive Jet Ranger/Tyler mounted Panavision camera could ever achieve. Your Highline coverage of the route was superb, being the absolute most iconic part of the journey I was most impressed by your front coverage of 482 as it draws closer to the bend. My documentary was shown earlier this year to the DSNGR, if I had seen your work I'd be asking you to include it, as its multi-shots and angles of a scene that make any movie. For all the dedicated rail fans that make the pilgrimage to Durango, never knowing what weather, what available light they're going to get for their photographic efforts, well that was what I saluted... and when combined with scenes from over a dozen HOLLYWOOD movies that literally put the DSNGR on the map for the whole world by helping save it from going under, it made for the next best thing for all those people that will never get the chance to ride the train in person! My late friend Conrad (the King of Diffusion) Hall photographed BUTCH CASSIDY, and it was because of the unpredictable weather that he convinced the studio to shoot the DSNGR scenes first, back in September 1968... and Joe, like me he too would congratulate you on a fine job!
