Durango & Silverton Railroad - Part 3, with Driver, Passenger and Lineside Views

Our train continues through beautiful Colorado mountain scenery, following the course of the Animas River to the Silverton where the rails just stop in the street, no stop block, no station, the rails just end. Silverton is a real Wild West outpost. Cowboys on horseback driving a herd down the main street, drunken gunslingers and ladies of ill repute touting for business were all that was missing. Silverton looks totally authentic, even though today's visitors are more likely to be tourists, who arrived on the iconic D&SNGRR train up from Durango, looking for a souvenir or a bite to eat. Finally we re-join the train for edited highlights of the return trip along the highline, 400 feet above the Animas River to Durango where we watch the last train of the day arrive as the sun sets on an amazing day.

Great videos as always. I am an Anglo-Kiwi and when I retired in 1994, we went to North America for 3 months including a month in Canada and two months driving across USA from Boston to Seattle. We visited Durango, which we thought the best of the old cowboy towns. We then drove up to Silverton. I remember there was a statue there of the madam who ran the local brothel. In a mining town she was highly regarded.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. In some ways this line reminded of the Taieri Gorge Railway, the colour of the carriages and the deep gorge. I caught the Canadian across Canada in January a few years ago, that was amazing, but I only ever passed through American airports on my way from the UK to New Zealand, this was my first proper visit to the USA, I had a great time. I'd love to do as you did and spend 3 months touring, but I can't get that much time off work, maybe when I retire. I missed the statue of the madam, although there was a place called "The Shady Lady".

Another excellent video. River is not as spectacular as #2 video except in highlight starting at 25:00 of the gorge from the cliff on the ‘highline’ which is really pretty. Started to rain at 10:00 as rocks are wet and shiny. The steam engines are really beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Tim! Me and my family have all seen 3 parts and are just thrilled. These beautiful shots of this area are simply fascinating. In this area, the fox and the rabbit say goodnight. We have to thank you for the wonderful videos you presented to us this year. We have all seen them. We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please continue as before. Greetings from Hans from the Millquarter in Upper Austria. 👍👍👍🚂🚂🚂

Hello Johann, I am pleased you enjoyed all three parts, it was the film industry that helped keep trains running, because it featured in a number of Westerns featuring people such as John Wayne, Robert Redford and Paul Newman. If this railway had closed along with the other narrow gauge lines owned by the Rio Grande Railway Company, it would have been a tragedy, fortunately it had always attracted tourists, helped by the film industry, so it remained open long after most of the other lines closed. Today three tourist railways keep memories of the once extensive narrow gauge system alive, the Georgetown loop, the Cumbres and Toltec along with the Durango and Silverton Railroad. I will upload videos showing the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad around Christmas time. I would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas from Southern England. Best wishes. Tim.

Hi Janet, it did look a bit dangerous at times, especially knowing that the rocks do tumble down the mountain side occasionally, but I satisfied myself that statistically I was ten times more likely to win a big lottery payout, than fall victim to a falling rock.

Hello Hugh, your comment means a lot to me. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Our tour leader on this tour told me, "I love my job, I get to see wonderful places and get paid for it". If I do I'll be sure to let you know.

Hello Tim, different colors of rocks in and around the river and of river water itself made me curious. In addition, Silverston was a silver camp and there is the 'Mineral Creek' (17:20). I found at web confirmation to geochemists Animas River area is more than feast to eyes. - Heinz p.s. Maybe feast to nose and ears, too.

Hi, you might find this both interesting and disturbing to read - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Gold_King_Mine_waste_water_spill
@pega17pl
@pega17pl 6 лет назад
Thanks for link. After reading I've to say river Animas is still very acidic indicated by orange-red colored stones at water. At silver and gold mining locations there are always lots of toxic chemical elements present. Article about geochemistry of Silverton area published 1995 confirm that. Closed mines are always a big danger to humans, animals and environment.

It may be romantic to think of cowboys herding cattle in Silverton, but at 9,300 feet up that was never going to happen 😉. Lots of drunken silver miners though. Silverton only has a population of around 630, but is the county seat of San Juan County -- with all of 701 people! I drove there from Durango in the late 80's over two 10,000 foot passes and got there before the first train, so the town was pretty much empty.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Hi, this was my first visit to the USA, I loved every moment. My impression of American life was gained from watching movies, especially Westerns. Silverton looked just like the towns portrayed in old films. Coming from the UK where our mountains are mere pimples compared with those in Colorado, it hadn't occurred to me that cattle were unlikely to be found at such heights. I would love to return and spend a couple of days filming the trains from the line-side some day. I'd also love to do the drive from Durango to Silverton. The population of Silverton must more than double in the tourist season, although I imagine it must be bleak in the depths of winter.
@AML2000
@AML2000 6 лет назад
The Cumbrian Mountains are pretty impressive in Britain. In the mid-70's, when I was stationed in Germany with the US Army, I drove over using the Hook of Holland-Harwich ferry, drove to the small town I lived in as a boy in the fifties near Manchester then drove up to Carlisle which I used as a base of operation to drive around the Cumbrian mountains among other things. Those one lane roads with 25% or more grades are far more hair-raising than any main road in the Colorado Rockies!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Your time in Europe back in the seventies must have been interesting. Some of the roads in Britain are pretty hair raising, especially in Cumbria, Wales and parts of the West Country, although the most dangerous I have driven were in New Zealand and one in Crete (Greek Island) where my wife made me stop the car so she could walk, I would love to have got out and walked as well, but it wasn't an option. The roads I traveled along in Colorado were generally well engineered, although travelling by coach, I was never likely to experience the back roads.
