Not quite a driver’s eye view, but a guard’s view reversed. Apart from a car reversing across the lines right in front of the train, there is little to give the game away in this video. Take a seat and join me for ride into the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains via the Veta Pass to fir station and beyond.

If it's emptiness you want, we've got plenty to spare. I believe that only 2 other countries in the world live on a smaller percentage of their land than we Americans do. The first is our neighbors to the north, Canada, for obvious reasons. Pretty much everyone in that country lives close to the southern border. And then there's Australia, where the majority of the people live on one coast or another.

Tim it was super. I never realized how desolate it was there. I know it was reversed, but didn't matter. Beautiful country. Wild and rugged. The sky so blue. Damn I loved it. Thanks....

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. This railway was an unexpected surprise, it was part of an arranged tour and I knew nothing about the line. Now I have seen it I would love to return and spend two or three days filming it.

Wonderful video Tim! I've driven through this region many, many moons ago, but was never aware of this tourist operation until more recently. Sadly, the San Luis & Rio Grande railroad is now in receivership and the future of this line is uncertain. Much of the equipment for the tourist train is up for sale. The local county governments would like to purchase the rail line if possible because it brings in much needed tourist dollars (plus the railroad owes around $2 million in property taxes) to the region, but that eventuality is up in the air at present. Again, great vid. I'm glad you got a chance to document this amazing route so everyone can appreciate it. Originally a narrow gauge railroad, the line was built in the late 1880's and has been in operation for over 100 years. Until now. Hopefully the future will be brighter.

Hi, sorry I've taken so long to reply, I've only just found your comment. I was on a rail-tour covering the railways of Colorado, the Pikes Peak line closed shortly after my visit, happily the eventual outcome was a good one, hopefully trains will return to the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, its too good to lose.

Hello Tim! Return pushed! If you do not look closely, you will not even notice. A car drives fast still wrong over the railway intersection, and then the train is already roaring. Downhill, the diesel engine is really on the gas, because otherwise they can not get ahead. Uphill she drives with idling, because here is the force of gravity. That's great. Greetings from Hans from the Mühlviertel.👍☺🚂

Hello Hans, the car driver was amazing, such skill. Apart from the car there were very few clues that the film had been reversed. I used the sound recorded by the camera mounted on the engine for the climb from Alamosa to Fir. Best wishes from Tim in West Sussex.

@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I used Pinnacle 21 to reverse, remove the fish-eye effect and stretch the video to fit the frame. There are some shots in this video looking from the back of the train that show you how the video looked before I worked on it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XrGV_FDqong.html. It pays to do one process at a time, I find that if I try to do everything at once, it is more than my computer can cope with.

Hi, I've just watched a video showing the building of the White Pass and Yukon Route in Alaska. The guys who built these railroads had to put up with terrible working conditions, disease and being ripped off by com men, they have left the world a wonderful legacy as a result of their hard work and suffering.

I usually call parts of America like this Kerouac Country, because nobody, and I mean nobody ever described the beauty of this country better than him. Hell, I hopped freight trains for two years because of that guy, and how amazingly beautiful and fun he made hopping a freight sound. And he was right. 🌝
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 2 года назад
I didn't know these railways even existed, it was a real bonus to ride them, the countryside they pass through is unlike anywhere else I've been, the rugged beauty has to be seen to be understood, I fell in love with Colorado. It must have been fun hopping freight trains, I wish some of the trains included one passenger car, because I'm sure there are plenty of people who would enjoy riding freight trains without the risk of being caught. I'd certainly be up for it 😊
@joydivisionisnotdead67
@joydivisionisnotdead67 2 года назад
@@Timsvideochannel1 Yeah, it's practically impossible to hop freights anymore. They've really tightened things up in the last 10 years. Not that I would even consider doing it again. I was still a young lad, fresh out of the Army when I did that. But I still remember it like it was yesterday. You really are good at spurring nostalgic memories with your awesome videos and thoughtful replies. I appreciate that immensely.
@Timsvideochannel1

@@joydivisionisnotdead67 Some people have interesting stories to share, one guy who grew up near Lake Louise in Canada recalled as a kid the freight trains would slow down enough to let him throw himself and his bike into an empty box car, the driver of the freight would slow again at the point where the CN and CP lines were within sight of each other a few miles past Jasper to allow him to climb off, the process was reversed later in the day so that he could get home again, I couldn't imagine such a thing happening today. I'm guessing it was something he arranged with the driver in advance. The great thing about being young is that you feel invincible, you don't consider the dangers of train hopping, it's just another adventure, then as you get older and wiser you become more conservative, I wish I was young and care free again 😉

Normally, I wouldn't go for a reversed video, but I think this was a suitable video for reversal since there was (as you said) so little to clue the viewer in to it having been reversed. All the same, 2x speed is Your Friend. :)

Colorado is a rail fan's paradise, it is home to numerous heritage and private short line initiatives such as this one. I did have a camera on the locomotive, but the vibration from the engine was more than it could cope with, whereas the one a the back recorded well, so I played with the video editing settings and this video was the result, not ideal, but the next best thing.

One great thing, I think, about filming from the rear window; you probably have a little more freedom as to where you position the camera, as opposed to the front view, where I'm assuming, the camera has to be in a spot where it wouldn't obstruct the driver's view. This one is perfect, dead center.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 2 года назад
There are a lot of advantages with filmimg from the back of the train, it's not dificult to get permission and if its raining the droplets are less likely the land on the lens. It can be very difficult to place the camera in the centre on a locomotive for many different reasons.
