Just in case this video was not clear enough, IF YOU HAVE A HYBRID generator, you don't need the snorkel kit. You just a new Natural Gas Regulator that connects to the same/existing Propane port on your carburetor. Your choke placement will differ from altitude, settings, and machine. Link in description for kits that you can buy cheaper. Also, shortly after this video, I did paint my gas meter pipes with RUST-OLEUM professional high performance enamel spray paint to prevent rust. Now if you have a "gasoline/petrol only" generator, the additional port method or snorkel kit would work best for you.

Yep, I just got a hybrid generator, designed for gasoline and propane. I just used the conversion kit for my barbecue, which converts the barbecue from propane to natural gas. Just pop the line off my barbecue and popped it on to you the generator. You are correct, you have to adjust air flow with the choke, but it runs great.

Hey Chris, great video with a ton of information! I was wondering if you ever measured the pressure in your gas line? I’m asking because I have a set up that is almost identical but can’t get the engine past a few revolutions before sputtering out. I’m using a similar regulator but am thinking of switching to the exact model you have to minimize variables. The specs listed for that have a pressure inlet between 9 and 13.5 inches of water column. The pressure in my line is roughy 7.5 to 8” w.c. which is pretty standard for residential gas lines into a home. I’ve also read that the gap on the spark plug should be decreased for natural gas because it’s a “dry fuel” and can be a little more difficult to ignite. I was wondering if you made any other changes that weren’t mentioned in the video. Thanks Chris!

Yes, but it's strongly frown upon. You have to make what they call "suicide cord" which is like a dryer male to male plug. You also have to make sure you turn off main switch at panel.

@@Mr-Chris ... and make sure all family members know what not to do while that suicide code is in use. The simplest demand is, "don't touch it", but in the case of you being away and your spouse needing to get power back on, you could give more details (don't ever touch the metal prongs of the plug -- they are the equivalent of live wires).

You can, but run the risk of back powering utility power back to your generator should your utility resume if the main is not separated. Too much humor error is in play without proper electrical interlocks.

I took what information he provided, did a check with an HVAC mechanic friend. Following that, I bought mostly the items he provided the links to & converted my XP12000EH that I had already purchased from Home Depot last year. After everything was finished the trial run worked perfectly. Now I don't need to worry about buying gas or propane in canisters, it's now running off the natural gas that runs in my house. Thanks for the video. I could not have done my conversion without seeing what you did. I have a DuroStar ep12000 dual fuel. It came with a different regulator than your DuroMax (made by the same company). I put a 3/8” quick connect nipple on the regulator inlet. I put a 3/8” socket on the propane hose w/ regulator that came w/ the generator. I bought a 1/2” I’d 24’ hose with 1/2” nipple on one end that connects to the 1/2” socket on my natural gas line & a 3/8” socket on the other end that connects to the regulator. This allows me to connect either the NG or the LPG hose to the regulator. I can change from NG to LPG to gasoline in a few seconds. Runs great. Truly tri-fuel.

Nice work. At around 2:00 in the video, you’re holding the carburetor in your hand. Couple of questions: is that the original carburetor? And, if so, did you remove it only because you needed to install the longer tubing that came with your kit? Or is that a new carburetor that came with the kit?

Instead of disconnecting the propane setup. Just put a quick connect on a 90° brass fitting to angle the quick connect toward the outside of the generator. Buy the natural gas convertion with snorkel kit with natural gas regulator and extra long rubber hose. Put a 3/4"quick connect on the natural gas regulater. You don't have to take parts off to have a dedicated propane or a deadicated natural gas generator. Have it to where you can plug into either one that you need to run at that time and have a true tri-fuel generator. All you did is keep your generator a dual fuel generator.

So I'm thinking that if you mounted a 3 way valve or a tee with 2 separate valves, you could keep the ability to run propane as well. Propane through the existing regulator, or run Natural gas through the regulator you mounted.

You could do that, but the new regulator also works propane too, you only need a adapter fitting from 3/4 to 1/2 or 3/8 propane line. Depends on how intercit you want to be with the this setup, but your idea would also work.

@Mr-Chris
@Mr-Chris 2 года назад
You can try closing your choke and trying different positions to see if that helps. Honostly I think you should remove the snorkel and connect the new regulator directly to the carburetor like I did in the video. If you want to switch back to propane you can do so by using the new regulator with a propane adapter fitting. Essentially you don't need the old "stock" regulator since the new one works with both natural gas and propane. I think the snorkel is the problem not letting enough natural gas into carb to work since it already has another port connected to it . The snorkel is only meant for generators that are gasoline only.

@PianoSoulos
@PianoSoulos 3 года назад
The gas hose and diameter of the line line is specifically dependent on the HP of the engine you are using, how far the line is away from the meter and how many gas appliances you plan on using with the generator, also, is the line direct from the meter, or are there other appliances on the line. If the hook-up hose is kept to 6' or less, the use of a 1/2" hook-up hose and quick disconnect coupler for up to 18hp engines is acceptable. The point is to have the correct size pipe up to the shut off valve for the generator.

Hey Chris, I’ve got a question for you buddy. I’ve got the same setup, almost. I’ve got the 13000E- gas only. I installed the US Carb kit using the snorkel and it ran fine 44 hours during hurricane season. Problem was, it did not want to start easily and I was having to get while using the prime button to get it going , but after starting it ran fine. It would either backfire or take like two or three minutes to start. You inspired me to order the 13000EH carburetor from the factory with the propane intake port, like yours has. I sealed the carb and now it won’t start or run. US Carb and Century think the port may be too small or my NG hose fittings are to small, etc. I’ve used full flow large port fittings on everything and it ran fine. The propane port is much larger than the snorkel holes for sure. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks man.
@Mr-Chris
@Mr-Chris 3 года назад
I am not sure if this will make a difference, but I remember reading how the Carb needs to run on Gasoline for a few hours before converting to NG. Have you tried running the new carb on Gasoline only? Does this Generator have an auto choke? If so, you might want to check to see if you can override the auto choke when you start it.

The conversion kit requires to run it prior to conversion to seat valves , harden cylinders, etc. I did that and hated that gas was in the bowl over winter so was happy to be replacing it with a dry carb lol. Hello Chris sorry to hit you up with questions, 1. Do you really need a 3/4 inch hose as it is you are reducing the size on the meter from 3/4 to 1/2? I read that you do need a lot of BTU for this generator to handle the load at 9500 watts. Have you push this to the limit? 2. the amazon link for the conversion kit, for that price they do not include the load block, they said on the Duro max XP1200 you do not need it? Have you found that to be true? if your load block pretty much wide open with full choke ? 3. did you run the generator with gas prior running it with Natural Gas for the first time? I read you must run the generator at least 2 hours on Gas prior running it on Natural Gas? let me know what you think. Thank you.

#1. This is debatable, "professionals" say that for a 18HP engine like this... meter fitting can be 1/2, however they recommend 3/4 meter fittings. The "pros" also say the hose needs to be 3/4. However some users say 1/2 hose and meter works well, while others say it doesn't. # 2. That's right, You don't need a load block for this kind of generator as the carburetor already setup to run Propane and it can run natural gas so long that the regular is adjusted to the correct pressure. I think the load block is only needed for Gasoline only generators. #3. I owned the generator for several months before converting it natural gas. I think I put about 10 hours of use on it and changed the oil before the conversion.

Hi Chris. So I’ve been eyeing the XP13000EH and plan to use NG with the kit you used. Problem is, on sale the 13K sold out everywhere. It was $1079. Would you go for the 13000E gas only model ($979) or the 12000EH hybrid ($1200)? I’m looking at the bigger and cheaper model without propane since I will be NG. What do you think?
@Mr-Chris
@Mr-Chris 4 года назад
Well when you convert to NG... you will only get about 80% of what the rated capacity level. So I would go with the 13000E gas model to squeeze out any little bit of extra power that I could get. Keep in mind when you convert to NG on the gas only model, you will need to install the "snorkel" & regulator... where as in a Hybrid model you only need to install the regulator like I did in this video.

Thanks for the video. I'm a bit late here, of course, but I have the same kit and am in the process of converting a welder/generator for trifuel. I am not a plumber but its seems you already have (had?) what you need to tie into a 3/4" pipe for natural gas supply. Perhaps a plumber could verify this, but it seems that you can swap the 3/4" Tee coming off the right side of your meter with the nearby 3/4" Elbow off to the right (leaving the short pipe section attached to the elbow). Then you'd have the 'free' open end of the Tee to attach to your generator feed line with the benefit of eliminating a lot of extra pipe connections - plus look a lot cleaner.

I watched people wait in line for gasoline in excess of one hour every day. I did not have to bother with that. At the 11:46 mark, you mention that your 100 amp main breaker box prevents you from using the 50 amp outlet on your generator. To confirm the accuracy of that information, I Googled, "Do I need a 30 amp or 50 amp generator inlet box". That brought back some search results that seem trustworthy. In answering that question, those websites make no mention of checking to be sure whether one's breaker box is 100 or 200 amp. I don't bring this up to take issue with you about it. I bring it up because I am about to buy a complete system and I need to make sure I buy the correct stuff. I would really appreciate any further insight you can share about it. Who told you that 50 amps shouldn't feed a 100-watt main panel? Thanks!!!
@Mr-Chris
@Mr-Chris 2 года назад
You are right... The reason I have a 30 amp is because the only option for me to install a transfer switch at that time was the Generlink (connected to meter). The Model Generlink I have only goes up to 30 Amps. The reason I couldn't install a 50 AMP interlock or traditional transfer switch is because I had split bus panel breaker box which wouldn't work with a interlock or generator transfer switch. The issue wasn't that100 amps won't work with 50 amp, but that my breaker box is an old 1970's split bus panel, which means even if I turn off the main breaker, it is still hot and would back-feed. So my only option at the time was a Generlink transfer switch that connects to the meter and automatically disconnects to the grid so you don't back-feed. If you have 100 amp main breaker box that shuts off at with a main , then you can install a 50 AMP transfer switch with no problem... Now fast forward to today, I finally upgraded my breaker box to a main shut off 200 amp box so I can eventually install a 50 amp interlock. You can see my new breaker box here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TmFbOQF85h8.html

Well all natural gas conversions lose about 20% power compared to gasoline. Mines runs most of my house on natural gas connected to the propane inlet. The Venturi adapter really isn't needed in my opinion for this specific type of generator. I also think to install the adapter on this generator, you'll need to cut the frame for it to fit properly . Try it out and see if it works.

I removed it... but you don't have to do it. I have no intention of ever using Propane, but you can just leave it un-piped and reconnect it when you want propane later. So the old regulator is not connected to anything correct? Yes, the old regulator is removed. No snorkel either, just remove the old propane hose and connected the a new hose to the new regulator. To get propane to work with new regulator, you need a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter fitting, you should be able to hook up propane to the same regulator using such an adapter. However you might have to adjust the inlet valve which is easy to do.

@MrPatdeeee
@MrPatdeeee Год назад
Oh yes for sure. You will have 3 options: 1. Gasoline alone. 2. Gasoline and Propane alone. 3. Gasoline, Propane and Natural Gas. However, there are things you must do; to set the Gen to use any of the above Gas fuels. IE: Option Gasoline. Turn ON the Gasoline line. Option Gasoline and Propane. You must turned OFF your Gasoline line. And then change the big "knob"; that say Gasoline or Propane. That is all. Now IF your option is NG; do the same with some differences. IE: When you are using NG, you MUST turn off the Gasoline line; and leave the knob on Gasoline. NOT propane as many do. Now one CAN do it. BUT...the Propane "regulator" can be damaged when NG; is being used IF the knob is on Propane. MANY do not know this. But it is very important. So again when using NG, turn off the Gasoline line and KEEP the option KNOB on Gasoline. NEVER have the Knob on Propane. ONLY use that when you are using Propane. Hopes this helps you.
