DxO has just released PureRaw3 with DeepPRIME XD - I am blown away by the quality of noise reduction in high ISO images. I take a look at this software compared to Topaz Photo AI and standard RAW files in Lightroom.

I bought it, installed it, used it, and I love it! Thanks for keeping me up to date on the best noise reduction method yet, and by a considerable margin by my experience. 👍👍👍

Bought it based on the results from the 30 day free trial. Shot a MLB night game in 2015 with the. D7000 with a Nikkor 55-200 @ 200mm. Shooting a pitching sequence for an overlapping composite. It was a night game so I had to increase the ISO to counter the limited light caused by f5.6 max aperture and the 1/2000sec shutter speed to freeze the pitching motion with max clarity.. The image had a lot of noise and good for the personal scrap book but way too much noise for the intended composite. DXO Pure RAW 3 cleaned the entire image. No noise period, leaving a pristine image (no joke) perfect for my composite. The software read the RAW info, downloaded the correction settings for the exact camera and lens used and corrected for the lens distortion to boot.. The final image was not cropped at all. It is phenomenal. If you can't afford pro gear, this program will give you professional looking results as if you used expensive gear. I have some really old images shot with a consumer level D40x and the 18-55 kit lens. Looking forward to testing it out to see the results.

I'm sold on it. Honestly blew me away as i expect that "painterly" look you get with most software and Topaz . This seems to avoid that and is very clean.

If you spend time with the sliders in Topaz DeNoise or Photo AI you can get good results- but for easy 1 click denoising this DXO PureRaw3 is very impressive and noticeably better.

Thanks and I have Photolabs and Topaz however, all ends up in LR. For my last trip I used Photolabs to "do" Pure Raw and adding Clearview. Seemed a good result. In the end I used LR denoise instead of Topaz.

Great review. I also have Topaz AI in addition to Pure RAW. All the RAW photos go through Pure RAW first, but there are times that Topaz AI adds some nice finishing touches. I don't use Photo AI for may primary noise reduction as I find it blurs the photos a bit more than I like, but it is nice for older JPG files. Pure RAW only works on RAW images.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
Thanks David. I plan to adopt a similar workflow though I may mostly reserve the PureRaw use for the higher ISOs and then still do some sharpening at the end with Topaz AI.

I have worked PR3 just half a day now. I'm flippin' crazy over it. 25600 ISO stills, under exposed -1, processed firstly by PR3 then C1 are flawless. Working with aging 7RII tech, and I'm thinking this may allow me to expunge my GAS. They made a winner.

I've been using version 2 and found it superb. Version 3 has more options and the upgrade price is reasonable. For me, by some distance, the best noise reduction software. It's only drawback is the large files created by the conversion.

I used DXO Pureraw 1, but the sharpening artifacts were bad, making it unusable. I'm happy to see that DXO listened to feedback, and now we have the option to switch off lens sharpening. This is how it should be used if you don't want to get that nasty sharpening countour around everything. Setting it to soft is somehow acceptable, but anything beyond that is as bad as it was in DXO Pureraw 1 or worse. Now, It's working very well with DJI Mavic 2 pro, but I wish to see smartphones added to it, like S22 Ultra. And, why not, DJI Pocket 2, for which the raw files really need some AI help.

Their upgrade pricing is very expensive. It’s barely less than a new licence. I bought version 2 just a month ago. I emailed DXO support asking for a discount code on an upgrade to version 3. Not a chance. Won’t be upgrading. Version 2 will do for now.

Great video! I use Topaz Denoise with my wildlife shots, as it seems many wildlife photographers do. I was under the impression that Topaz Denoise worked better for denoising than Topaz Photo AI, but I could be misinformed. Would be very interested to see what DxO Pure Raw 3 could do with aviation photos. I haven't found any noise reduction product to be effective with those, as the denoise algorithms seem to be confused by smooth, relatively texture-less metal surfaces. They end up leaving tons of noise, smoothing out or mucking up details (seams, rivets, or text) or both. Very frustrating!
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
Thanks Greg! I am interested to see how it does too - that seems like it could be challenging. Give the trial a try or send me a a RAW aviation file that you think would be challenging. Let me know and I can give you a dropbox link to submit the file.

Oh - and to answer Topaz Photo AI vs Denoise Ai. I found the results to be similar enough on a handful of photos that I liked having one app that did it all. I should test again to see. I also don't think that Topaz Denoise offers a plugin that works on the original RAW without working outside of Lightroom which is a pain in my opinion.

Been using Pure Raw 2 for a while now and really like it. However, it doesn't work on Astro photos at 10,000 ISO and at 100 ISO it makes the image way to sharp. Almost looks fake. Otherwise, it works great for all other images. May upgrade to 3 but not right now.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
Randy with the newest version you have control over the sharpening - so if you are running just ISO 100 files through in a batch or individually you can turn that all the way down or off even. I just did a quick test on an ISO 100 file and it looks very natural to me. I haven't had a chance to try it on a very high ISO astro shot yet. Just a few 2500-3200 aurora from Alaska and they look pretty good.

DXO is the best but the one thing I don't like about DXO they won't support built in lens profiles. If your shooting video you might want the built in lens profile to match your stills. Also I might want the built in lens profile because that's how I framed it and my Olympus came when shooting use the built in lens profile. I might be having internet issues and can't download the DXO profile.

Thanks for the review. Might jump from my 1st version now 😃However, it looks like you still cannot save to the same folder as a setting, Just next to the original image like any other program does ... . I do not understand why this isn't a possibility ... I would want the image always next to the otginal raw, maybe even auto stacked. So I always have to either designate the folder for each image, or copy from a "processed" folder into the original location. Why does DxO introduce this unnecessary step into the workflow by forcing to choose a dedicated folder?
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
Hi Jens, You can save back to the original folder though it requires a few clicks. You can save that as a favorite which makes it easy in the future but it would need to be reset each time you work with a different folder. Once it is back in the original folder Lighthroom does give you the ability to stack it. I agree that it would be nice if this was the default setting.

@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
You just made me download Bridge :) - The answer is yes. You can simply right-click a file in Bridge and choose Open With > Pure Raw - it will then stick it in a queue - You can add more files or click process and then you are at the step I showed in the video. It returns a DNG that you can then continue on into Photoshop to edit. It does not appear as a filter option like Topaz does inside Photoshop but that is because Pure Raw will only work on the original RAWs. Hope that helps.

@drewarmstrong4325 Год назад
And, are the DNG's HUGE still like they are with DXO Pure Raw2?
@photorectoby
@photorectoby Год назад
Pure Raw 3 offers the XD Deep Prime - which is the improved version of denoising. How improved? I think it is going to depend on the photo. So the cowboy shot I showed in detail. Original RAW was 16MB, the PureRaw3 file is 67MB and the Topaz Photo AI dng is 144mb. So yes - those DNGs get large but at least that example not nearly as large as the Topaz version.
@djmusic130fdy
@djmusic130fdy Год назад
@@drewarmstrong4325 There is an interesting third step here. I've been with DxO since version 1, and the DNG files are quite large. However, when you save the file as a JPG, you'll most likely find the images are significantly smaller than images just converted from RAW. Turns out all that very fine noise takes up a lot of space in a JPG file. You'll have cleaner images and smaller final JPGs.
@drewarmstrong4325
@drewarmstrong4325 Год назад
@@djmusic130fdy However, this is the first step. No way I can live with editing JPG files for the rest of the process. If this like final output sharpening or something it may be different but this is something. you generally do upon import. When it turns each of my files into a 300 Meg behemoth... It gets freakin huge after a night of shooting milky way you could use up a terabyte.
