I used to use packet box dyes... but they come with so much plastic. Even before I went low waste I tried to reuse any quality items my box dyes came with (particularly the really good thick black gloves, which I'd stashed for years while trying to reuse the same pair til they broke - they're so much better than the oversized cheap plastic film ones some box dyes come with). When I went low waste I used up all of my old box dyes, saved about 4 applicator bottles just in case (I actually use the same one over and over again) and embarked on finding a less wasteful alternative. I had a Solfine dye from a drug store hair product bag and have fallen in love with that - aluminium tubes, I can get two dyes per tube (doesn't go off if you seal it well) and the peroxide solution it's mixed with to activate comes in 1Litre bottles from the pharmacy. So now my only non-recyclable waste is the small plastic cap on the dye tube, and the only recyclables are an aluminium tube and it's cardboard box and paper instructions every 2 dyes and a 1L plastic bottle every 25 or so dyes. AND the new dye is so much better for my hair... my natural curls had fallen out with so many layers of dye but are slowly returning.

This was a great video, and Im listening to it as I crochet-!!! I'm really suprised this hasn't been mentioned more, OVERTONE!! oVertone is my absolute favorite hair care brand, my hair feels amazing afterwards, they don't smell like an energy drink or pure bleach, and I ESPECIALLY love that they have a line for darker hair. I use their blue for brown over my greenish hair, and it turns out absolutely beautifully. Plus, they have lots of other bold colors. They also don't have any harsh chemicals and it's vegan and cruelty free, or so they say. The huge jar it comes it may not be recyclable always, but I always reuse the container anyways. Is it an absolutely 100% lowest waste possible that I have thoroughly researched? No. I have to get it shipped to me. But they packaged everything in recyclable cardboard and it's the only good stuff that stays on my dark damn hair, so thats my win.

I use "single use" plastic gloves when dying my hair, I normally dry them on a clothes line and one pair of "single use" plastic gloves can easily last me 4+ uses! Because I'm just using them to prevent dye from getting on my skin, instead of using them for hygiene purposes, I really don't mind that they have already been used :)
