I've only ever dyed yarn from animal fibre using low immersion. Usually, I don't use a heat source to set dye on plant fibres but I decided to give it a go this time. It really sped up the dyeing time! And, I'm not quite sure how, but I managed to get some beautiful speckles from the dry powdered dye. The dye broke into the colours it was made of and created some beautiful cotton yarns and aida.
Featured in this tutorial:
Yarn: 10g 77% cotton, 23% silk yarn, 10g 68% cotton, 32% jute yarn, 10g 100% cotton yarn, a small square of Aida and 5 metres of 6 stranded cotton embroidery floss.
Dye: Wedgewood Blue and Razzle Dazzle fibre reactive dyes from Dharma Trading
All equipment (pots/spoons/jars etc) used in this video is dedicated for dyeing.

Thanks for an interesting video, I’m an newbie to the dying side of the tracks and I’m so glad I found your channel this early on, it’s giving me ‘ok’ to just try it and if I don’t like the result, that’s ok too, the rubbish gets lonely sometimes! 🗑💘

The best advice I can give is to just have a go. I've just finished editing a video where I over dyed yarn for a third time because I didn't like the results the first two times. Good luck with your dyeing journey!

It’s a lot of fun to layer on colours to get something unique. Thanks for watching!

I have 85% cotton and 15% polyester. I’ve been trying vinegar and water or citric acid and water. The color stays but isn’t very vibrant. What am I doing wrong? I’m using jocquard dye and doing a cold dye since heat doesn’t seem to be my friend even if I want to add heat.

With cotton you need a fibre reactive dye (sometimes called procion mx) and soda ash. Vinegar/citric acid won’t work on plant based fibres. What dye type are you using?
@tehanu3

@@FromTheCauldron the Procion. But I’ve been mixing the dye with citric acid and vinegar. I now think that’s my issue. Cause it does dye; just not vibrant colors. 🤦🏼‍♀️ god I’m an idiot.🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

@@tehanu3 it’s an easy mistake to make. Don’t worry about it. Good luck with your dyeing!

@@FromTheCauldron thank you! Can I add heat to it to quicken the process?

@@tehanu3 I’ve found heat can help speed up the process.

Why did you heat it?
@FromTheCauldron
@FromTheCauldron 3 года назад
Because I wanted to use hot water rather than cold and to see if I could heat set similar to animal fibre.

@@FromTheCauldron ok. I usually dye with plant fibers and wondered if this was something new. The results are cool.
