This lecture by Osman Balkan, Associate Director of the Huntsman Program in International studies & Business at the University of Pennsylvania, took place at Boston University's Center for the Study of Europe on Monday, February 5, 2024. The subject of discussion was Balkan's book, Dying Abroad: the Political Afterlives of Migration in Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2023), based on his field work with ethnic minorities in Berlin and Istanbul. Balkan's work connects “migrants' end-of-life dilemmas” to “ongoing political struggles over the stakes of citizenship, belonging, and collective identity in contemporary Europe.” The conversation was moderated by Noora Lori, Associate Professor of International Relations at Boston University's Pardee School of Global Studies. The event took place as part of the Center for the Study of Europe's “Decentering Europe” series, the aim of which is to understand Europe in relation to other sites of socio-cultural production, political engagement, and economic transformation.
