@Brushstroke, in the case of Cobain's suicide - he despised the media's intrusion into his personal life and the perceived witch hunt. He was most probably undiagnosed bipolar, and had a crippling heroin addiction at the time of his death. His fame may have accelerated his downward drug spiral in that he had easier access and a 100+ dollar a day habit. He had a family history of suicide on his father's side. When he killed himself, he had been faced days earlier with an intervention and forced into rehab, which he escaped from. The note they found by his body expressed a desire for his daughter (a toddler) to have a better life without him in it. I'd say his story and character is fascinating because he was quite a paradox. Don't think he ever dreamt of worldwide fame, but he was quite ambitious in his band's early days - calling up radio stations, and headhunting execs at Subpop records to get his debut album released. I think in his suicide it was a perfect storm of events - I agree that had he not been exposed to fame and money he'd maybe still be here, because his drug addiction worsened in a relatively short 2 year period. If you see him in the "Montage of Heck" doco, it's shocking to see the deterioration. Thanks for your comment. It reminded me also of something Jim Carrey said about wishing everyone could achieve all the fame and wealth they desired, because they'd see it isn't the answer to their problems.

Was it your ego fighting back? Not necessarily being possessed by demons?

@@Clair_FireBirdI think it was the ego fighting back. In my case it was not demons or anything like that. I could not sleep, and was exhausted and after a couple of days every time I started to doze off, I would see disturbing images. I thought I was going crazy and had damaged something permanently. All fabrications of the mind, of course, I am fine now.

That's where she was at that time. I think she's moved on but hasn't reconciled with her previous phase yet. A lot is happening for her. A lot is changing.

I've followed her after reading her books (usually only 99p) and she's such a breath of fresh air from the usual "law of attraction' types. She's as down to earth as she is here. I understand what you mean about red flags, I avoid such people myself, but after getting to know her more I can see how different she is.

Had an "on the cross moment" too, where I thought I was going to die and I thought "wow, ive really gone and killed myself, and now my family are gonna find my body in the garden". Then I was given a choice: "do you want to stay or do you want to go?" I said "stay stay stay stay" and then the cosmic joke set in and I went inside and had some lunch lol. From feeling like I was going to physically die to eating a bacon sandwich lol.

I remember a similar experience when kayaking many years ago. I had flipped in a rapid and couldn’t right myself. I could see the blue sky and white clouds above me and I relaxed and said to myself “so this is how I go”. It was so peaceful. Then I had the thought “hell no” and I exploded out of the boat.

I think you want to mindfully ("objectively") weight the pros and cons from the perspective of an impartial observer. Make note of which part of you is speaking/making the statement. If it's the ego speaking about its wants, make note of that. If the motivations are primarily ego, then I suggest pursuing something else for better reasons -- in alignment with who you are or want to grow toward next. For example, a friend was trying to decide what area of employment to pursue after achieving his psycholgy PhD. One possibility was neuroscience scholarship. He had never mentioned being interested in neuroscience before. He wasn't much of a scholar. It was clear that if he were to pursue neuroscience, it would be for the social status and prestige - all egoic reasons. What is your root reason or motivation is a question to ask. Have your reasons and motivations stem from a source worthy enough to spend your time doing it.

@@dke388209 Thank you! I appreciate the advice and think that makes a lot of sense. The ego is definitely asserting itself here and wants to position itself but there is something quieter under all that noise I will gravitate towards.

Scrap the "only". But it's very easy for us to use personlaility in this way because of habit.

Do you teach?

@AlwaysAwake I do teach philosophy at SUNY Stony Brook, but as a PhD student, not yet as a full time professor. I also have a podcast (the speakings podcast) and am experimenting with other endeavors to try to approach philosophy in a more experiential, personalized, embodied way.
