I finally get to share a secret that I've held for the ENTIRE Scrappy build! Scrappy has dynamic suspension that allows me to change the setup for differing terrain, takeoffs, windy conditions, and more! Now you know all the secrets...well, so far :) Thank you to KING Shocks for working with me to create a custom suspension system, you guys are the best!
Here's another video with more on the suspension and a bit of the hangar from my friend Dmitry!

*Hey Mike, Hope you read this!! I know how you always take things to the next level. But this idea I have may be something you may not have considered. So In the Marine Corps we “helicopter maintainers” use the nitrogen pressure side that is inside our shock strut’s suspension to determine the weight of the helicopter. You could use your suspension to do the same thing. This is basically accomplished by Lowering the suspension: by bottoming out the strut... fill with pressure... the moment the suspension moves... record the results... do some math and make a chart.. next thing you know you now have the weight of the aircraft. 😉 Love the work you do, keep it up!
@wingman358
@wingman358 3 года назад
Great idea, and the pieces are all already there in scrappy. Could even make it automatic by programming it to grab the pressure when the position sensors start to move.

@lazyjackass77
@lazyjackass77 3 года назад
Yeah there's a lot of nope in that idea. The only way that would work at all is if there were predefined routing and certifiable automation involved. Can't be having just anyone beebopping all over the place willy nilly. It would be a recipe for disaster without those two stipulations unfortunately. I think there was a youtuber who recently did a video on that but I didn't watch it. I'm sure there are lots of other obstacles and challenges that I can't think of off the top of my head.

@chrisdougherty9098 3 года назад
@@ginvr I’m right there with you. The mechanism could be fairly simple. Mike often eludes to a “worm gear” and it would be easy enough to use a couple of worm gears to slide the rear portion of the wing at the rear spar back, and down. The skin of the wing could slide on top of one another, which would make sense that he’s using aluminum skin.

Many of the most complex things made are several simple inventions combined. I am sure that King Shocks and Garmin love to work with him because is has that child like enthusiasm to dream "what if" I.e. what if we built a shock with a separate air piston that could be adjusted on the fly (to the extent of the piston stroke) an indefinite number of times then used angle sensors and electric servo-controlled valves to control the hight of the tail wheel, then used programming in the Garmi that says if angle less than "x" open valve "a" if angle greater than "y" open valve "b" close valves when angle reaches spec. All simple steps, but when combined, magic.

I expected the suspension to be pretty impressive, but never in a million years did I expect Mike to have solved so many problems, and made so many improvements, just from the suspension. - Huge travel soft suspension to cope with the worst terrain. - Can drop low, wide and firm for safer taxiing. - Suspension can remove AOA from the wings to improve safety on the ground (which simultaneously improves taxiing, and makes it easier to board). - Automatic adjustments to remove tail wheel shimmy for different load configurations. - Can lean for sloped fields, and can keep the wings and tanks level when parked on a slope. Holy crap! That's five MASSIVE improvements that I've never, ever seen on a plane before. Mike, you never cease to amaze, incredible work!

Like I commented before, your wing design reminds me of the The Mission-Adaptive Wing program. It used a fly by wire control system to change wing contour to maintain peak aerodynamic efficiency over a large flight envelope. Being able to change the cord thickness goes a step beyond the MAW program which if memory serves me right, used a variable wing camber system. I'm willing to bet that the Mike Patey designed system will be much more capable and efficient in its operation. Being a Veteran of Naval Aviation as well as a Licensed A&P Mechanic in my post service life and a life long aviation enthusiast I anxiously await every one of your videos. 👍its back, cool. I thought those switches would have been for in flight adjustable dihedral and other winged things. If I recall you were sort of sad with Draco having to compromise with your dihedral, so it would allow you to slip into Canyons. Although my work is not anywhere near your caliber I did design and build my own little bush plane it's a tricycle with 18in to travel on Fox air. And yes it articulates on-the-fly so to speak. I also designed my own in-flight adjustable dihedral. Very few have seen my plane though I do not go to fly ins and I post nothing on RU-vid. If you should see it it's candy apple green . With a healthy 2300 with fuel injection fed by 2 AMR 500 superchargers.

Thanks for ALL you and your family do! I believe you installed a camera on the underside of the front cowling? This will not only be helpful on the ground but in the air as well. In July 1977, my late father flew my brother, a friend and I to a fly-in. On final, a biplane came down on top of the cabin of our 172. Fortunately no one was hurt, with only some cosmetic damage to paint and demolished antennae. Certainly a front mounted camera would remove the blind spot for the biplane pilot. Seeing you and SCRAPPY someday is on my bucket list. All the best to you and yours.

Man being here from the start of Scrappy build has been crazy. I never knew I would like a plane build so much. Waiting every week for a new episode has been fun. I can't wait for Scrappy to be finished it's going to be awesome. I have learned so much through this build. Thank you Mike you've shown me that anything is possible if you work hard enough and if someone doesn't make it then make it yourself.

I'm a jet guy. That said, I suck working on GA recips and math. I can fly them well but working on them🤣🤣🤣🤣... I'm damn near mathematically illiterate (I can do the math required to do my job but past that, mathematically I can probably understand Mandarin long before I could do advanced mathmatics.) But every episode I watch of yours you and your builds inspire me to get my head back in the books so I can diversify my abilities as an A&P and learn the maths that will give me the ability to understand better the dynamics of what makes an aircraft and its systems function on a level I've never before been able understand. Thank you Mike, you're a real inspiration. Blue skies and swift tail winds. "Back to work!💪🏾" 👨🏽‍✈️🛩🚁✈👨🏽‍🔧

I keep a bucket by my TV to catch all the excess enthusiasm Mike puts out that I cant absorb while watching these videos. It comes in handy when I have to do chores and I'm all out of motivation.

Mike, you are definitely changing the world of bush planes! This thing is absolutely nuts. Scrappy is not so scrappy. I am very excited to see this plane fly and watch all these functions in action in the real world situations!

My grandfather was a long time EAA member despite not having a pilot’s license, and their magazines were my favorite reading growing up. When this beast is finished, I will be making it to Oshkosh or wherever else I can see it in person! Also, my 11 year old son’s favorite motivational phrase is now the Patey arm pump and “Back to work!!”

OMG Mike it’s finally official. As an engineer, figuring out the game plan along with the Garmin integration and not saying anything was killing me. But the look 👀 on your face and the enthusiasm in your voice says it all. Wait until the wings come out. People (myself included) are going to need a defibrillator for that debut!!!

This is so insane! Quite actually considered every scenario. I appreciate the acute level of detail across this entire build - not only Scraps, but Draco, and on…and on…and on. Premium carbon work, avionics, fabrication, everything…premium! Can’t wait to see wings and then fly!!!

"Silly stuff like this..." watching an aviation pioneer innovate is hardly "Silly stuff"! I truly think that watching where your "back to work" brain goes when you are in "innovation mode" is rather what it must have been like in that small bicycle shop in Ohio when Wilbur and Orville were trying to figure out wings and powered flight flight for their first time. You and all of those names laid into the carbon fiber on Scrappy are an ongoing revolution in GA. I am surprised that Mr Musk hasn't tapped you for his Mars design team...

I work at a chemical plant and we go to great lengths to keep the pure O2 away from hydrocarbons. I cringed when you said you were using O2 on your shocks. Great move going to N2 ! 👍 Really enjoy your videos. It inspired me to get back flying. Never finished my pilots license from many years ago. Just got my license a month ago at age 61.

in northern Idaho where my Father grew up, his double cousin (raised as a brother) has a large farm in the rolling hills area and uses a self-leveling combine that I got to ride and drive when I was in Highschool. it keeps the machine level so it seperates the grain from the chaif properly and the cutting bar stays level with the ground to cut the stalks properly at the same time. It is an interesting ride as it can tilt up to 45% to either side automaticly or manualy. He first showed me this at the ranch on level ground with me standing beside him in th cab. had me a bit surprised at the ride!
