People: "Dust is bad, put on a mask" Mike:"I build a new dust-free room..."
@stevecuthbert8856

Most people would simply put on a dust mask. Mike builds a state of the art clean room. My only other comment is why not put the HEPA filter unit outside of the room to reduce the ambient noise as well as not taking up bench space. Granted there are fans producing noise but it would reduce some of the extra decibels. Now Mike, you need to wear ear plugs when doing noisy work. I wear hearing aids in both ears because I didn't wear them on the flight line when I was an F-4E weapons loader in the US Air Force in the 70's. I love what you've done to Scrappy.

I like learning about it but have no real personal experience with aviation outside of commercial flight. But as a metal fabricator and hot rod builder I must say I love to watch him build. I have learned a lot about molding fiberglass and carbon fiber as well. A lot of this will transfer right over. So she must have some kind of interest in the fabrication so that is really cool. He puts out some good clean content good for anyone who wants to broaden their mind. Glad to hear you got something to watch with her.

I don’t build airplanes... I build sculptures and architectural structures... but I want all my apprentices to watch these videos so they get a feel of how In Depth you have think thru complex systems. A comprehensive understanding of the materials and forces involved results in a comprehensive design, well worked out. The little things like body parts that snap together, Planning for conductive isolation, Thinking about how the water will get out and how a metal tube filled with a hot liquid gets Longer... You see it as he assembles it, but realize that he must have planned for that with his initial drawings. And perhaps most importantly, that thinking this way is Not a Chore... but an infectious enthusiasm and a pure joy that comes from seeing something you thought out in every detail go together and work exactly as you envisioned. Every CAD designer and 3D modeler ought to be required to BUILD the things they design. ( at least for some years ) It makes them much better ( and more valuable ) designers.

On the gust lock pin, when you put it into the home position in the cockpit with the micro switch, what stops it falling out if you find your aircraft inverted? Also I assume that if the pin were missing only prevents startup, and wouldn't cut the engine out if it were accidentally removed from the cockpit. (Like the cutout switching a motorcycle stand, not a condition youd like to find yourself in in mid flight)

I have a question! I just graduated highschool in Germany and I'm planning on studying electrical engineering. Since I've done a couple of build projects before I know (at least in my experience), especially when doing a lot of concept work on the computer beforehand, that often times things don't quite seem to work out in real life and things need to be adjusted/redesigned/switched around/... My question is whether you've had such things happen with Scrappy and more importantly what they were and how you fixed them. I love the videos but sometimes I can't help but think "there's no way everything goes this smoothly without anything having to be reworked at all ever.." Are you just that good? Or are u human after all? Much love from Germany!

I’m guessing that all of the years of engineering consulting ( design it build it test it break it) has highlighted the areas that are most common for issues. Mike is stupid smart with tons of high level connections. There are many brainstorming collaborations ongoing continuously. It’s math physics and engineering that runs through his veins. Knowing the materials and contemplating as many variables as possible while always keeping an open mind for development and design that fuels his (I’m confident) very high success rate one off part perfection. At least that’s what I think. I’d love to hear him elaborate more about this. Great question.

4:00 I do the same technique when I design restaurants with the hood fan and HVAC. The kitchen is out of balance, with more exhaust CFM than air supply, and dining area is opposite, creating airflow into the kitchen from the dining area. It prevents smoke, grease, heat, and kitchen smells from getting into the dining area. I also add a few dozen CFM to the vestibule airlocks to push flies outside.

@ryanmcgowan3061
@ryanmcgowan3061 4 года назад
@@deanmiles3505 Definitely a concern, and for more reasons than you'd think. Restrooms are near equal static pressure, slightly negative. It's a small volume and too much negative pressure in the bathrooms can cause air to be sucked out of the P-traps, and then you're pulling sewer air into the restroom. (If you walk into a terrible smelling restroom, try pouring water in the floor drain). I sometimes used two air grills on opposite sides of a wall or connected by a small duct to control airflow without creating suction.

@@Asta-wl8jz If it 's just on the starter circuit, then no, it wont stop the engine running. The only issue I guess would be if the engine stops and needs to be restarted in flight, and the microswitch has failed. Very unlucky circumstance, but you have to think of everything lol. I'm sure he's already thought of that, but if not, a time delay system could be one way round it. Once the engine is running, the microswitch doesnt do anything. Once the engine has stopped, you've got say 10mins until the microswitch becomes active again. Or you have a fail open microswitch, which would allow you to start the engine when the switch has failed, but could allow you to forget to remove the pin if it failed on the ground. Just thinking out loud haha, bit extreme really. You could fill the fuselage with safety systems to prevent this and that, but that just means there's more to go wrong lol.

It is getting so more exciting! You make me truly sorry I could never finish flight training. But water under the bridge. Yesterday I watched the 2018 STOL drag race competition where you just barely beat Trent Palmer. That whole video was just great. The fact that Trent was less than a second behind Draco was great. Love your energy. Keep it up.

So, I’m trying to imagine the amount of planes one has to mess up to get to the point Mike is at - where every other little part installation has a “you gotta do it this way, or else it can crack/break/fail/explode” explanation behind it.

Actually Mike said he does all his parts test on the computer and it shows him how the part will move and how much strength it has. He showed in one of his episodes how he build the landing gear and how the computer showed him what strength everything needs to be.

I actually had the same thought. How many planes are built where these details are not attended to, like corrosion of carbon fiber when connected to....whatever he said. Also, are most planes able to take off with pins locking down the flight surface controls?! This all goes on and on...... Mike? Are most planes super unsafe?

Hmmmmm! Great job, attention to detail, standard of finish etc and your work ethic is out of this world . One little observation viz a viz the aircraft reg lettering near the tail . Here in the UK we have strict regulations as to Registration lettering (size, position etc) and our CAA is twitchy about having undersized lettering on a plane. They will allow it but only if the fuselage is too small to accommodate it. Under the wing is of course no problem as there is plenty of area to use. Regards, Jim in NI UK

Great work as always Mike, Just one little comment, the dust/fume extract on the new bench would be mush improved if you used a full length slot rather the grilles that you have. The high velocity created by the slot would significantly improved the capture of dust and fumes from the bench.

Mike: I love your attention to detail and professionalism. I saw something the other day that might be a good idea. I know that scrappy will be using an airboat prop. In the Swamp people, they have one airboat that has a counter-rotating prop. I know you would have to adjust the thrust washers to make it work which I know you could do. How cool would Scrappy be with counter-rotating propellers? Would that eliminate the need for rudder on takeoff?
@grahamb1
@grahamb1 4 года назад
Great idea but the problem with adding the mechanism for the counter rotating prop and another propeller is Scrappy already carries a lot of weight, anymore would tip it over the edge, also it's not practical to add anymore weight to the nose.
@Newberntrains
@Newberntrains 4 года назад
@@grahamb1 SERIOUSLY there is not one practical thing about any of these creations that get rolled out of that hangar of his 😂
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin 4 года назад
Only issue I can see with that is you need a gearbox to make the counter-rotating section of the prop turn, so that adds more weight than just "add another prop". Not that important for a swamp boat, but critical for an aircraft, especially one with as much nose weight as Scrappy.

He invited viewers: "Anyone want to take off on this concept and produce, go ahead, I'm sure there would be a lot of buyers"...... But you are right- This build has many part creating opportunities to go into production on it seems.

No doubt. The innovations on this thing are next level and if companies aren't producing a slew of Mike's ideas I would be surprised. Mike doesn't look like he needs the money (the money spent on this plane, and his "work hanger" has to be, at this point, millions, not even counting his work time), however, selling his many ideas could be quite profitable? .

I used to fly front seat in a P&W 985 Super Stearman that had the oil cooler mounted in the aft fuselage. The hard oil lines ran along the airframe next to both cockpits. In an open cockpit, in the cold weather, those oil lines made perfect hand warmers.
