Many people think that way. I've been doing this work and I can tell it still takes time to get used to it. You need to know can you or cannot come close to paver (for example too hot weather and asphalt is very hot) and which side you turn before paver especially on curves, plus you have to remember that you are not allowed to stop your roller on just laid layer
If the binder course fails compaction or density requirements do you mill up the entire thing to replace binder lift or just fine the contractor for failure to produce density?
You can likely achieve the same result with existing paving equipment. First, lay the binder course. Later, as the wear course is being laid, reheat the binder course with a truck towing an array of propane burners inside an insulated housing. This runs immediately ahead of the paver. The capital cost would be low, but the fuel cost might be problematic.
How are you ensuring you get satisfactory compaction of binder course? Seems like a logistical nightmare alternating trucks to fill each hopper? binder course and surface course get same rolling pattern?
You are still driving 1 paver! The only "additional" job is to handle material flow from the second (top hopper). --> A challange that can be handled by all high-end paver drivers. [We also have according technical trainings...!] The paving speed (of course based on the paving width and thicknesses) is on average 4-4.5 m/min. Not too fast anyhow... /Roland
you may gain an advantage in bonding, but you loose out on rideabality. the thinker the mat, larger roller marks that have to be taken out.. its an overly complicated process which would be hard to manage efficently, and i question how good they can achieve good takeoffs. id assume that they step the existing mat that they are taking off from, so there will be a differential in compaction 1m from the join. dont get me wrong, paving 11m with a paver avoids joins, so less failure points. simple fix, 2 pavers hot join all the way. only need one buggie to be at least as efficient as the video above...
These are outdated technologies. Better ones are used in Bulgaria - several gypsies put asphalt using shovels and then one or more of them walk and jump on the newly laid pavement to compact it.
You should offer your services to the city of New Orleans. You would not believe the disgraceful condition of the suburban back streets in that city. Many neighborhoods have not had their streets repaved since the early 80's. And I'm not talking about the ghetto's. I'm talking about some of the most desirable middle class neighborhoods.
I would say the city, but most of the people are poor and black, and they wouldn't want to spend money paving roads in white neighborhoods, no matter how disgraceful. In fact, that is why they haven't been paved since the early 80's. New Orleans elected its first black mayor then, and he is reputed to have sworn he'd never pave those roads because white people didn't vote for him. I don't think there has been a white mayor since. And of course, there is all of the corruption.
