Thank you very much. I finally solved the burning smell problem! I bought this Dyson because it says it is for pets (Dyson Animal) but mine are Shelties that do have long hair and it was wrapped tight under the shield also. Thank you so much for the solution!

Thank you for this video, I managed to clean up the brush bar, but it wasn't too clogged up. Sadly the brush bar still not working, so I'm thinking a wire or motor issue. Do you have any info on sorting this, any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Thank you so much!!! I'm nearly in tears writing this! I thought I was doomed, and had wasted over $500 on a vacuum, but I followed your video (pausing and restarting) to get my brush head clean and it works great now, with no more burning smell, and the brush rollers don't cut out anymore! I bought a Dyson animal ball 2 a few years ago, and within 3 months I began to smell a faint burning smell, and the rollers would sporadically shut down while in use. I cleaned what I thought was the entire brush head assembly, but I was shocked at all the small areas you pulled hair and dust from on this video. I, of course, missed those areas, and within another 3 month, the brush head stopped working altogether. So I ended up ordering a replacement brush head (for $100), waited nearly 9 months to get it, and the same thing started happening again. After contacting Dyson customer service, they told me I have carpeting with "too high of pile" and that my machine was never going to work property in my home. That was devastating to hear. I called the only 2 vacuum repair places within an hour of where I live, and neither of them service Dysons (I can see why now). RU-vid was a last ditch effort, and I'm so incredibly thankful I found your video! It was extremely helpful, detailed, and I sincerely appreciate the knowledge you've shared! This literally saved the day! P.S. Could you tell me what kind of lubricant you used on the bearings?

Thank you! I clicked on this video on a whim while putting mine back together from replacing an internal hose. I thought it would be a time killer. Nope! I clean my dc65 brush very often so I didn't think I had any issues, but after taking it completely apart like you did I had some crazy melted hair. Thankfully not worn through to the bearings like this one. But I can see the difference on the bad side vs the terrible side of mine. Now I know to do this with every cleaning. Thank you again! We are also a family with lots of long hair, good to know this isn't a good choice of vacuum. We've had it for 5 years and got it as a refurbished machine. Still going strong as we replace each part that breaks. Learning so much that I wish I'd known from day one to care for my vacuum 😬

Hi Stephanie! Thanks for watching! For something that is not incredibly expensive like a Rainbow but will far outlast and outclean something like a Dyson or Bissell, I would recommend Sebo. Very informative thank you. I had the same burning smell issue with our Dyson. I took the entire power brush unit apart and found debris (hair) in the motor and everywhere else. The burning smell was actually in the motor. I was surprised how quickly you assumed the smell was only from the rollovers. You had all the screws out to pop the motor cover, but never explored that possibility. I appreciate your time and knowledge. I did learn from you how easy it is to remove the power brush unit and a disassembly procedure.
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and the comment. While on rare occasions hair can breach into the motor unit, you will typically see evidence of that at the bearing posts where the brushroll attaches. If you see hair extending into the motor housing, then you certainly need to address that. In this case it had not advanced that far. Cheers!

I agree this unit is over the top, at a high cost. Got one from trash pickup day and wanted to learn how it works and what went wrong with it. Plaster dust blocked the ports in the space gun canister and the roller motor was smoking due to hair as shown and water in- take. Thanks for the video.

Great video! I so much wish I had a T-10 Screwdriver. I borrowed my Aunt's Dyson and soon realized how not worthwhile these things are. I smelled burning and thought I would be a considerate borrower and try to fix it and clean it. Definitely, prefer my ancient Oreck (even though it won't work on hardwood floors). No point in having a HEPA filter when it ends up all back in the air as you soon as you try to clean it.

Hi Lynn! Both my wife and my daughter have long hair. I find that most of it is focused upstairs in the bedrooms and bathroom. So on the upstairs level I have a Sebo E3 which has the tool-less brushroll removal. It doesn't have bearings to pull the hair into and everything in the brushroll is protected. It takes maybe two minutes maximum to clean the brushroll with a pair of scissors. It's the vac I sell to any friends who have issues with hair wrapping and all of them are please. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and commenting!

This was incredibly helpful, even if I discovered our drive was not in good shape after finding the burning and melted hair. Still, this was such a clear, informative video, I knew exactly how to find the issue and how bad the issue was. Based on your comment in the video, what vacuum would you recommend for a household with long hair and pet hair?
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 3 года назад
Thanks for watching, Scott! Sorry to hear the drive assembly was already too far gone. I personally like Sebo vacuums for households with a lot of hair, mostly because their brushroll design is pretty impervious to hair melting. The brushroll can also be completely removed without tools for cleaning. My wife and daughter have long hair and that is what I use upstairs where most of it accumulates. They are made in Germany and built like tanks. For an upright, they start at $499 retail, so they aren't out of this world different than Dyson prices... but the quality is much, much better. For a general overview of their quality, check out my video on the Sebo E3. It's long, but it shows the build quality from the inside out. You can also check out the Reddit sub r/VacuumCleaners... there is a lot of good Sebo information there. Let me know if any other questions come up!

@@HouseOfVacuums Thanks! The main use is for thick carpeting in the main living areas. (After watching your video and taking apart the brush roller, I was shocked at how much hair had melted into the plastic.) Thanks again!
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 2 года назад
For a household with a lot of long hair and majority carpeting, I highly recommend anything by Sebo, but most specifically one of their uprights. They all have toolless brushroll removal which makes these super easy to own when hair wrapping is an issue. They also have the 10 year parts/motor and 7 year labor warranty when you buy from a dealership like us or your local vac shop. Sebo Dart - $499 Sebo G4 - $699 Sebo X4 - $799 Sebo X7 - $999 These all have the toolless brushroll, and I think $499 for a starting price is pretty reasonable for a vac made in Germany when you consider what your Dyson cost new. Sebos are pretty much indestructable. I have a video about the Sebo E3 canister in my Sebo playlist on my channel. Pretty much everything I said there holds trust for their uprights as well. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

Batteries on the V series is an issue, however the fault is mostly the owner. Cleaning a whole carpeted house on boost mode or animal grooming on boost mode constantly kills the battery. I only use it if someone tracked footsteps of dirt on a carpet ( 15 seconds max that's it). Most of this flashing blue is overuse on max or boost and other improper use.

Everything looked fine on mine. However, Dyson did not do a good job of sealing the brushed motor platform that holds the terminal wires in the galleries and the motor with the radial seal. Dust bunnies get into the motor cavities over time. The smell in mine also contributed to a hot motor which I caught in time. If your getting hair build up issues and burning smell due to lack of maintenance, and everything looks fine on the surface. I would strip everything down just to the motor platform, remove the wire terminals off the motor take tge wiring out of the passages or wire galleries undo the U shaped wire recess from the powerbrush assembly right to terminals and inspect for melted or discoloration of the wiring as well. Future problems can lead to brittle insulation of the wire and shorts causing intermittent powerbrush operation or no operation at all or motor burn out. Did this to mine and a deep clean to avoid Future issues. Others weren't so fortunate when I serviced theirs. By the way that powerhead is discontinued. A used powerhead that has other issues, but the motor and gear drive assembly is good is your best bet or a good used powerbrush is ones best bet.

Thanks for watching and for the comment! I personally recommend Sebo vacs for anything related to hair, whether human or pet. The have a very well-built brushroll system with tool-less removal that make them extremely easy to maintain. They are also made in Germany and come with a 10 year warranty if you purchase from an authorized dealer like myself. They start at $499, so right in Dyson's bread and butter range... but with much better quality. Thanks Again!

I am admittedly watching this without sound while I feed my baby but if you did everything to clear out the hair as described in this video and the brush roll still does not roll and the smell is still present…does that mean the vacuum is toast and I’m looking at a new vacuum/parts?

Sorry for the delay, Alisha! I was on vacation. Yes, if it is still experiencing those issues after cleaning it means the hair got pulled into the drive assembly. It isn't able to be services, so it may be time for a new nozzle unfortunately.

@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 3 года назад
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for watching! The Dyson Ball models have a valve that diverts suction to the tools when the vacuum is upright. There may be a clog just past that area. I created a video for checking clogs on a similar model, you can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fEzdeHVgvkY.html . Take a look and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

After watching the video, I took my vacuum apart. I didn't have that fancy little tool to take the roller off on the ends it appears it needs a special screwdriver. When I got to checking the hose for the extension, I found the culprit. It was a small yellow met al padlock that my daughter must have left somewhere on the floor and it got sucked up. Thank you again. If not for the video, I never would have found the problem without taking it to a place that would have charged me a lot of money.

Hi David! In the same pricepoint as the Dyson I recommend the Sebo Dart/Felix. Super well built, made in Germany, crazy easy to maintain. A slight step up will get you into a Sebo X4 or X7, which are also great. Search for "Sebo Felix Reddit" and you'll get a TON of information and first hand testimonials on them. It definitely has a cult following. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@HouseOfVacuums

Oh man, if that is the case then you probably have hair sucked into the drive assembly. You can try to take off the motor (screws are accessed from underneath in the brushroll chamber), but the main bearing block is not accessible. There's a very good chance you'll need to get a new nozzle assembly to replace it.

I have no idea why Dyson sell corded uprights in other markets outside of the UK with this brush roll design. The brush itself its great; good quality and it agitates incredibly well, but that blind spot is nothing but a nuisance and a hindrance. Corded Dyson in the UK have used a new updated floor head which looks like a beefed up V11 floor head with a direct drive belt and a much larger diameter brush roll.

Wait... did you just say this "wasn't a vacuum particularly suited for this household based on the amount of hair I'm seeing?" Wow. We thought this was the "end-all" for pet hair. Dang. What other vacuum do you recommend? Or is there a way to replace the bearing at Graingers or somewhere? $100 bucks for that attachment?? Oof. I see why you do not to carry them. That sucks. I remember the advertising, "He tried 5000 different vacs and came up with the perfect one-without bags!"
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 2 года назад
It's unfortunate, but Dyson's marketing leaves most people with the same impression that you had. Truthfully, the only thing that makes this model the "Animal" is some of the attachments and the purple color. As for fixing the drive, it is a sealed unit and once it seizes it is toast, there is no way to replace the inner bearings and then get it put back together. I would definitely rebuild them if I could! As for something that is better with pet hair, I highly recommend Sebo vacuums. They start in the Dyson price range and are much, much better for maintenance and longevity. A few models that I would look at depending on your flooring needs would be the Dart, Felix, or X7... they go up in price in that order. If you would like more of a personalized recommendation based on your flooring shoot me an email at hov@thehouseofvacs.com. Thanks!

@HouseOfVacuums

Thanks for the comment! Yes, all the screws are either T10 or Phillips #1. I use a Channel Lock Torx set which I think was around $20. My Dad's bench as the Wiha set which are like $50 but worth every penny. You can pick up a good set at Home Depot or Lowes no problem. That being said, if you have anyone with long hair in your house I would stay far away from this particular model because the maintenance is going to be non-stop.

@HouseOfVacuums

Thanks for commenting and watching! Unfortunately, the DC41 is a maintenance intensive machine if you want it to continue performing properly. I would continue to maintain it like you have (8 years is a great run for one of these machines!) and save up for something lower maintenance in the future. If you want a low maintenance upright that will last you decades without having to worry about it I would look at a Sebo X4 or X7. They aren't the cheapest vacs out there, but for their build and durability I do think they are a very good value.

Thanks for watching and the comment! My first guess would be that it is not clogged, but rather you have restricted filters or cyclones. Pull the pre and post motor filters and make sure they are clean. You can also check your cyclone chamber by shining a flashlight up the middle column from the bottom of you dirt cup. Try and and let me know if anything comes up.

Thanks for the video! I bought this vacuum because it was so highly recommended for pets, as we have 2 cats and I vacuum 1-2 times each week. I find that I have to go through the steps in your video after every single use. Although there isn't as much fur as shown in your video, there's a lot for 1 use. Clearly a design flaw. What can I do to avoid breaking out the tool box every time I vacuum? Is there another power head with a better design that is compatible? I'd be very interested in your thoughts! Thanks!
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 3 года назад
Hi Krista! Sorry to hear you having issues with your Dyson... hair in the ends is unfortunately very common. The truth about Dyson Animal models is that they are identical to their non-Animal machines but have more tools included with them. Dyson made two nozzles for that upright... the North American and European spec. The Euro spec model is a much better design that doesn't have the hair wrapping issues. Unfortunately, it runs only on 220V and not the 120V your machine runs on, so they are not swappable. I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but at this point it really is a matter of maintaining your Dyson or getting another machine that is less susceptible to hair wrapping. If you are looking ahead for a machine that might better fit your needs, I highly recommend Sebo vacuums for households with a lot of human or pet hair. They are very resilient when it comes to hair wrapping and you can also clean the brushroll with no tools. I made a video that will show you some of the features, you can view that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O_iXluAjKSs.html I hope that helps. I appreciate knowing the size of the screwdriver as well. We have a golden retriever and the need to take this apart and clean it is about every 3rd time. The bad part is that the brush looks fairly clean and a person cannot really see how much hair is in the machine until you take it apart including the plugs the brush bars attach to. Early on I took my Dyson to their service center and explained the problem of the burning smell and they acted like no one else had reported the issue. It was hard to believe and gave me the sense they were not very honest. I had it in there probably twice a year during the 5 year warranty. $550 is a lot to spend on a vacuum cleaner and I expected to get more than 5 years of service out of it. I do think it is great with the suction and cleaning but the maintenance? Well for me to still be nursing the thing along says how much I appreciate its cleaning capabilities. I will NOT get another Dyson though when this one finally bites the dust. The service center was fairly generous giving me 2 new brush heads while under warranty and I was careful to collect the old one knowing I'd probably need their parts. I will look on your website to see which vacuums you sell. Thanks for the video.

How do you address a stripped screw port?
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 2 года назад
This doesn't always work, but stick a toothpick down the hole and break it off. Then put in the screw as you normally would. The added material from the toothpick will often allow the screw to hold as long as you don't over-tighten it.

@HouseOfVacuums

I'm sorry to hear it! Now you know how to take it apart and check it. However, if you can't get the brush out of the brushroll drive or if the plastic is melted, unfortunately you will need to purchase a new nozzle assembly. Burning hair is a pretty distinct smell, but if it isn't that then it may be the motor... but if you have a lot of hair wrapping on your brushroll it probably isn't. Best of luck and thanks for the comment!

The best way to avoid stripping them is to use either a Phillips #1 or #0 screwdriver to them. If one is stripped beyond repair, you can also try a super small pocket flathead screwdriver. It will fit in one "cross section" of the phillips slot, for lack of a better term. Hope that helps!
