Dyson DC35 Repair-Won't Turn On, Filter Switch Override Hack

This is a video showcasing the steps I took to override the filter switch. This is a switch that will not let the vacuum motor turn on if there is not a filter installed.

(check below for a Dewalt 20v battery adapter so that you can use a Dewalt 20v batter with your Dyson handheld vaccum. Please check model numbers that it works with)
Sometimes the switch goes bad or the rubber on filter does not push it in all the way. I am showing the way I repaired my Dyson DC35 that would not turn on by bypassing this switch. It will not harm the motor unless you run it without a filter in it. DO NOT DO THIS!
I didn't want to pay Dyson the fees they charge (^^^^^) to repair it their way. I did some scouring on the internet for Dyson handheld vacuum repairs and came up with this repair. The guy did not show a step by step so I figured I would, in hopes that it could help someone out.
These vacuums are great and pretty expensive, no need for a pricey repair on top of all that. If you do this, make sure you use a filter when operating your vacuum.
I hope this helps you out, thanks for watching.
Please be kind and hit the like and share.
Have a blessed day

Excellent, thanks for the vid. I didn't need to bypass the switch, but playing with it a few times got the thing working. If I didn't know the switch was there, I'd have gone nowhere. Thanks!

Glad it helped and if you do ever solder the switch just make sure you always use the filter. Thanks for watching Dave.

Thanks for the video, it helped me to understand and fix my issue! If you additionally remove the small cover at the bottom (just pull it), then you can just pull the two black thin cables from the filter detection switch (from behind) and connect them by either soldering or just demanteling and drilling (if you can't solder or if you are lazy like me). The only function of the filter switch is the detection, if a filter is inserted and to prevent powering on the device without it.

Before doing this, check if there is a difference when pressing the start button with and without the filter in place. If nothing happens without the filter but the green light on the top of the engine (as well as around the MAX button in MAX mode) lights on but the engine doesn't start, the problem is elsewhere. Where? I don't know, but it would be useless to make this modification in any case. This is very simple to check. With the battery in place but the reservoir and filter removed, press the start button. Nothing should happen. Then press with your finger on the rubber that is removed in this video and press the start button again. If the green light on the top of the engine lights up (as well as the green light around the MAX button if in MAX mode), it means the filter switch is OK and the problem is elsewhere. No need to remove the filter switch in that case. It won't do any good.

That is correct and thank you for your input. Sometimes the switch is worn and the filter doesn't push it hard enough or as hard as your finger. It is just a workaround. Thanks for your comment, have a blessed day.

Hi, could you please tell me where to connect the wires from the button - filter detector?

I just soldered the two contacts together. This bypasses the filter detector. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the late response, I do not have that Dyson it wasn't mine and they don't want me disassembling it again, Lol. I found this site that may help you. I am not sure which wires you are looking for but this site had some diagrams on it. I don't know who's site it is or if it is correct. I'm sharing what I found in hopes that it will help you. www.instructables.com/Dyson-Dc16-Cordless-Alternative-Powering-Options-M/

That's strange. My DC35 in the workshop doesn't have that microswitch. My DC30 at home however does.

So I'm a little confused... what's the purpose of soldering the switch so that you can run the vacuum without a filter? Won't running it without a filter kill the motor eventually? Why would you wanna not to use a filter? Also quick tip, I appreciate your video, but I'm a repair guy/tinkerer/basically anything you can take apart I dissect to learn how to repair it or replace things for cheap. What I really wanted to see in your video was you explaining every possible detail/step of what you were doing and why. So that I can learn as much as possible before taking this thing apart myself. My current issue is that the motor seems to just drop out intermittently seemingly at random. At first, the fix was to put cardboard on top of the rubber switch to apply more pressure. However now even with the cardboard, it's cutting out all the time. Gonna try and clean every possible part and check for any kinda blockage or anything. I haven't even done anything and now it's working again lol now I need to wait to repair it again lol.

Very good question. This video is not intended to imply that you are to run the vacuum without the filter. I will never run my vacuum without the filter so I have no need for this worn out switch. Instead of spending money to buy a new switch and replace it, I just bypassed it. Essentially I eliminated that switch so I didn't have to "put cardboard on top of the rubber to apply more pressure" I like to tinker as well, LOL. My problem was the switch causing intermittent problems like yours sounds like it is doing. I have provided you with an option to bypass this switch. Just make sure you use a filter with it. Don't run the vacuum without a filter. I hope I explained this correctly for you.
