Welcome to Pottery Shorts, brought to you by The Potter’s Round Table, the topic for this episode is What is a PSD?
The short answer is particle size distribution. In this episode Phil explores particle size distributions and why they are a useful tool for potters who mix their own clay or glazes. Enjoy the show.

Good question, unfortunately I don't have a good answer! You can, however, use refractory ceramic fiber blanket for many of the same purposes. And it's light weight and easy to ship.

Is there a book you could recommend for further in-depth specifics or a 'Recipe" for making your own clay? I keep thinking it has to be out there somewhere quite like a glaze recipe book. I mean to say, a suggestion for making a wheel throwing clay might be put in 20% of your local clay, x amount of ball clay, flux & silica, stain, but in a specific and formalized presentation. I've read about it before, but it is usually presented in a generalized way in a paragraph or short chapter and good luck with that! The idea that a potter should do this at least once in their lives had always intrigued me - I now feel better equiped to try it & I have a deeper understanding; maybe it won't melt all over the kiln shelves! Thanks again!

@@Angeliqueceramique and @Washhington Street Studios: So true! The first time I came across that mid-video announcement I also almost moved on to some other video! I got used to it, but still, I think the channel does loose some watchtime from that. I believe the intention is giving the announcement while audience is still high, but a warning that there is more video after that would be good!

Great suggestion, we’ll add a warning to future videos!
