I love when I go down a rabbit hole and find something valuable like this that has just been sitting here for years waiting for me to stumble across it
Very powerful episode! Fascinating discussion of elasticity/amplitude and strength/resilience in sport and backs, etc. Medicine has so much to learn from you This is Nobel prize level with Dr. McGill. Thank you for your work.
Brilliant back pain expert. He notices everything, like Sherlock Holmes. Favorite advice: minute :48, walk breakfast, lunch, and dinner time for 20 minutes since walking throughout day very helpful. Around 1:10 mark: minimize bending first hour in morning since disk are super hydrated and stiff, to minimize injury.
I had an appointment with a specialist about symptoms I was experiencing. They said nothing could be identified as the cause. And advised me to seek psychological counseling. Then later I visited another spine center. After looking at the MRI, they said that I’d been dealing with this for a very long time. Is it unreasonable to suggest that we could have done a better job of determining the causes of what I was experiencing and begin addressing it instead of denying, ignoring it and neglecting to do anything? The incompetence is baffling.
I kept visiting my Dr a few times and he would do a half assed assessment and tell me he couldn't find any issues..this went on a couple more times before I demanded an mri..had the mri and a few days later I'm having emergency surgery for a "severely protruded disc". The psychological damage to me having such severe symptoms yet being told I'm fine was horrible, unfortunately these incompetent fools are everywhere and I've gotten way more out of finding reputable videos on RU-vid than anything else
@@Skibbitypappappa They can’t even listen! It’s like we don’t know anything at all. I could go on and on. We can do a lot to help ourselves to with the right information. We can prevent a lot of things too. The medical industry isn’t interested in that! Anyway I hope things are going better for you. It sounds like we’ve experienced similar things. No one can understand the excruciating pain that one goes through with that without having experienced it. It really is hell. Agonizing hell.
I have ongoing pain in my feet from an accident a couple years ago. today I was looking for a video on feet when I stumbled in Dr McGill. His talk included information maybe beneficial to my case. Dr. was very interesting. It left me with questions for the doctor. How do I reach out to the doctor thank you. Carrol
I’m from New Jersey, I have suffered with back pain since 2014. I have chased every lead down and seen every kind of professional. They can’t seem to find an issue. I have been told everything from degenerative diseases to anxiety. It is so incredibly frustrating. Words can’t describe what it feels like to not be able to trust your own body. They also can not describe the fear of losing your job and everything that comes with losing your income. There are weeks In which I can not walk and then I’m up and moving. I’m in pain and aware of my movements but I can function. I need help and you seem to have a deep understanding of the back. Would I be able to setup an appointment to meet you?
Read John Sarnos Book HEALING BACK PAIN THE MIND BODY CONNECTION. I bet your local library system has a copy ,that you could read for free ....He has helped alot of People. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose.
I hear you mate. I have a similar issue. Injury in 2003, fusion in 2005. I've had massive pain and sciatica ever since. Been told I have 'problems with my pain pathways', and need to learn to manage it. eg they have no idea why I am in pain, and the problem is in my mind, there is no physical cause. I've been in an out of work, constant anxiety, I've had sleep issues for `20 years. I cant enjoy movies, or driving, or meetings, standing in line at the checkout - and on and on. The fear of losing income, and also losing the dreams you had for your life, are real. Chronic pain is such a drain on your motivation. Especially back pain, when it hurts just being upright. I also tried to see if Dr McGill would meet with me, I was told he is no longer seeing patients. Yet in every recent interview, he himself states he still sees patients at home. In other words - athletes, celebrities, politicians etc. But not the average person who is suffering. Yet he also repeatedly states how many world-class athletes he has worked with, so can assume it's simply to bolster his reputation. I don't know the reason why that is the case, but I definitely lost respect for him after hearing that.
WOOOOOW Thank you so much, ive been told the pain was in my head for 7 years while having erectyle dysfunction at 23. I gave up and learnt to live as asexual. But everything got worse, everything got much worse I couldnt even sleep in days I never felt tired, my forehead was full of hurtful lumps and if I pressed them I was able to sleep but it would have consequences the next day, everything more swollen hair loss where the lumps were. but the lack of sleep made me feel like dying, I was legit ready to die at 30 for some random disease that was all in my head even when my body was screaming with symptoms that could be felt at touch. Anyway I started getting better after seeing quiroprachtor and physiotherapist and etc but it wasnt enough. I went to a neurologist got MRIs he said it showed nothing and I was fine besides my scholiosis. Anycow I went to a random urologist right after who insisted it was a neurological problem and he send me to get more tests and they came pretty fine again, so he insisted that it was a neurological problem according to my symptons and he gave me medication for it. It instantly worked... I dont have a diagnose, I dont know if I will ever find it, but I started taking the medication yesterday, I was able to masturbate almost perfectly fine, even the sensitivity came back, I just know that it has got something to do with my lower back that has a huge lump and I feel better when massaging it, as well as my left hip all the way to my toes that can barely feel or move. But who knows. Either way this episode gave me insight and validation, thanks to the doctor
Sort of noticed people putting grip strength into programs, but this discussion was an awakening. At least three points where one's perspective before listening to this was reorientated afterwards.
@@milekrizman I'm sorry to hear that. What worked for me more than anything was the spine hygiene. I began noticing the hundred little ways every day that I was putting pressure on my lower back without even realizing it doing everything from brushing my teeth to getting in and out of the car. When I started changing the way I moved to have less stress on my lower back I felt relief almost immediately and have not had an episode of sciatica since reading the book a few years ago. It's so important to recognize and stop the movements that are injuring your discs. It's like death by a thousand cuts. You might not notice each little bad movement but they start to accumulate over time until you have a herniated disc. I did also find the McGill 3 exercises helpful and building up my core strength a bit before going back to the gym. Good luck whatever you decide!
@@rexx9496 it's true. I have disk herniation L5S1 for years. I noticed exactly the things you are talking about. But I have to do the surgery, because I am waiting iz since 2020. It was halted because of the pandemic.
joe hudson hahaha, I noticed one of my fiancée’s aunts was loading her hips in a peculiar manner just by watching her walk to get some soda lol. Turns out, she had a hip replacement! It’s a disease!
No doctor has yet to tell me exactly what's wrong with my back. Simply say I have 3 bulging discs and that's it. Nothing can be done they say. After watching many of these podcasts I wanna go.back to their offices and play these videos and call them liars and lazy
@@rosepink2773 Been doing the side planks and other excersises described in the book. The sit up holds but also focusing on bracing with everything I do especially in the gym. Really making sure my back os flat and core is tight when doing anything.
Same problem I am facing, 3 bulging discs, pain with burning effect in my left buttocks for last 5 months. Lots of pills and core exercise, but no relief ...
Would have been nice to hear his thoughts on the state of surgical procedures.. for example, the efficacy/safety of spinal surgeon Dr. Peter Wehling's patented anti-inflammatory Regenokine / Orthokine therapy, which has the top athletes in the world flying to Düsseldorf, Germany for! Or the theory of the late Dr. John Sarno, that suggested back pain is in your head.. even in the presence of herniated discs (ex. L5-S1(central-lateral) extrusion)!
@@swimbait1 No it's not His training is to help people get out of pain. Pain could be pre or post surgery If someone has a serious accident, and requires surgery, they shouldn't expect to get advice on surgery?
When I brace my core if I breathe too much air into my stomach to create pressure it hurts my back and increases back pain. Any ideas? I get no answers from " pain management" doctors.
I have. Ice it, ice it, ice it. I saw several different doctors, chiros and therapists who were either no help or made it worse. Then a friend recommended Dr. Michael Quinn in Capitola, CA. He is not expensive and can give you relief or advise you on someone who can.
yes, ice and ibuprofen help also a steroid shot in your back is monumental for the pain… secondly if it’s your nerve and it shooting down your leg it takes about six months for a nerve to heal. I would not recommend chiropractic for a bulging disc the thing that’s causing you pain is your nerve messing around and there will not help. It took me six months of complete rest which means no leaning forward bending from your knees if you have to pick something up from the floor don’t… If you don’t rest it it won’t heal after it healed I did core-based workouts and pretty much healed myself but I still have to watch my movements because I have spinal stenosis also
I'm just past the self-assessment in Back Mechanic (recommended by a guy in the grocery store who just saw me wince one time when stepping) and, based on the testimonials I've read and the content so far, I'm quite optimistic. I work on irrigation systems for a living, which involves bending over in every different way all day long until well past fatigue, when proper form is way out the window. I was also doing a lot of kettlebell training, but my hip hinge was supplemented with spine bending (as trained by work), and I'm fairly certain that load made things worse. I miss my Pavel training and hope I can regain the ability to train with swings and getups again.
All of it make sense ! Thank you. One question: you have been focusing on men's body. It would be interesting to hear about the specificities of women's body, their joints, ligaments etc... Many thanks for your answer!
Thank you doctor Stuart McGill , I am grateful ! I lived with back pain for a very long period of my life . The last ten years I am pain free , and still competitive waterskiing . Yanni V
presjo I get to see him January 2nd, I don’t know of any words to describe how excited I am and how grateful I am to see him in between professional sports teams.
